  • EA to discontinue Online Passes

  • ShapeThrower 16/05/2013

    I honestly didn't have a problem with the online pass system, actually thought it was a good idea in some respects. My worry now is we're going to get micro-transactioned off the face of the planet to compensate ...

  • PlayStation 3: retail disc vs. digital delivery

  • ShapeThrower 05/05/2013

    My issue with digital distribution is this, when PSN went down, my PS3 decided hat was the time to contract the dreaded YLOD. So a new one was acquired ..... but until the PSN was retored there was no way for me to get sny of that content from Sony that I'd forked out actual money for. Now before you neg me for Sony bashing and not just switching hard drives to the new console, you can't do that, the PS3 encrypts the drive differently for each machine, unlike the 360 where I can (and have) just swap the drive to a new unit .....
    I know this was a very rare occurance, but it's still something that sits at the back of my brain when contemplating digital purchases ....

    @Ryze

    For some content they're fine.
    Netflix and Lovefilm both have their good and bad points (I also have both) but when it comes to games the "on demand" offerings from both Sony and Microsoft are often over-priced compared to both "bricks & mortar" outlets and online retailers for boxed copies, not everyone likes to go digital, there's something to be said for having a nice collection especially when it comes to limited and special editions.
    Being able to talk to the guys in the store about what's coming out and what they think of things is good too, yes things can be cheaper online but I don't mind paying an extra £2 in a store if I can get it there and then and be at home playing/watching said item without having to wait for it to be delivered/downloaded (my broadband coverage is shockingly poor)
    And then there's the purchasing of hardware and accessories .. I've had power supplies and battery packs go faulty and they've been on hand to sort me out at short notice ....

    Really ? That's your answer ?
    Yes I already shop online, but that doesn't help when I want to pick something up on the spur of the moment or at short notice. Being able to walk into a physical shop and buy something is actually very useful you know.

    If my local closes I'll be gutted, the staff are great and it really is the only place within 30 odd miles of where I live to get games and movies. Yes there's the usual supermarket options but they're pretty dire at the best of times and I really don't see them sorting me out with anything that's not in the top 5 .... Reply +5

    As someone who enjoys the odd games night round a mates house and takes a couple of discs over that they don't have .. this would kill that, unless they make it incredibly easy to log multiple users onto one console and allow your ID to become easily portable. That's just my opinion though .... Reply +28

  • EG Expo 2012 Attendees' Top 10

  • ShapeThrower 05/10/2012

    My soul was crushed by the 3 youths who decided to join my table at lunch on the Thursday, it was 2:30pm and one was boasting to the other 2 that he'd played Black Ops 2 "like 5 or 6 times ... it's totally sick", by my reckoning of the queue that's all he'd played, and he was only there for that day and they were going back to the queue after they finished eating.

    The main issue I have with this whole debacle is the fact that with PSN down I can't access any of the content that I paid for from the PS Store or the content that came as part of my PS+ subscription, why's this an issue ?
    My console YLOD'd the day that PSN went down and as a result I lost everything on the hard drive. So even though I've got cloud storage as part of my PS+ subscription with all my game saves in it, what good does that do me when the network isn't available ?
    I now have a pile of games sat next to my console that I don't want to start again ...

    @abdo

    I've been reminded of that, my point was that MS have gone to the trouble of actively promoting a way for parents to monitor how their children use the 360, and yet here's this person trying to blame them for what is obviously a failure on their part as a parent. It was mearly an observation of mine concerning the PS3, I wasn't having a pop at Sony .. if this had happened on a Playstation Network account my response would be exactly the same, Parental Failure, but in this case it's on the system that made a very big deal over the introduction of Child Accounts not so long ago, which if used properly would have prevented this from happening.

    @chibber23 .. That it does thank's for reminding me, I suppose a better way for me to phrase it would be that Microsoft actively promote the Parental Controls available on their console, I haven't seen anything like that from Sony concerning this feature ..

    I can tell what sort of parent this is ... This is the same sort of parent I've watched in store being handed a copy of Red Dead Redemption/CoD: Black Ops (or some other age restricted title) by their child, ignore all the warning about the content on the box and purchase it for said child.
    Then when they finally watch them playing a portion of it with violence/bad language they complain ...

    Children need to be supervised or the parental controls provided on the system (which the PS3 doesn't have by the way) need to be used effectively. You don't give you child your credit card to buy something on Amazon without monitoring the transaction, why was this any different ...

    But that's just my opinion ...
