  • Wii reviewers are the problem - Braben

  • Sean.Aaron 19/06/2009

    @YourMessageHere:

I totally agree. If I ran a site like EG or IGN I would contract writers and reviewers to appeal to the broader market that has emerged to increase readership and make my site more relevant to people who were new to video games. Improving forum moderation would also be part of the equation.

I was hoping to have Minon by now, but apparently I either got my pre-order in too late or Amazon just didn't order enough copies because they're out of stock.

Guess it'll have to wait until after my holiday; hopefully by then I'll be able to find a copy at GAME and use my remaining store credit towards it.

@fillip: you can control the sticky aspect; most of the user-created levels I've downloaded don't use it.

I managed to score this on Gameseek as a pre-order for under 19; Eidos is distributing here and they're in typically brilliant form: you won't find it at GAME or Gamestation, but should be able to get it at Amazon, Gameseek and play.com.

"I realised a long time ago that the only person concerned with actually making lengthy "proper" games at Nintendo is Miyamoto. Or at least he's the only person with enough clout to be listened to, everyone else gets stuck making waggley casual stuff. "

And he's the brains behind Wii Music, so I guess you think that's a "proper game" then? Glad to know I'm not the only one that likes it!

I deny it; no issues with Wii graphics. I also don't view HD content on my plasma as DVD over component looks just fine.

    No.

This is a must-buy and sounds like it definitely improves upon the original in every way (long since cleared from my shelf to make room for this one). The no-codes creation sharing is the capper.

This just got reviewed on IGN and the controls weren't slated as badly as Ready 2 Rumble's, but they're clearly not ready for prime time.

Could it be that rather than just translate the game these issues will be addressed prior to a European release?

I would be shocked, but it would be nice to think so. Otherwise Punch Out! looks like the best boxing option on the Wii and the only one to realise the limitations on the motion controls and use them effectively.

  • Wii games must sell 1m to make a profit

  • Sean.Aaron 01/04/2009

Well, Reggie is saying he was misquoted and DUH, there are many factors in determining whether or not a game is profitable, so you cannot just pick a number out of the air like that.

  • Square Enix buys out Eidos

  • Sean.Aaron 30/03/2009

Hopefully we'll see new IP getting better backing than it did when Eidos was independent. Their unwillingness to put any money into marketing anything besides Laura Croft is a big part of why they couldn't cut it. Not good to put all your eggs into one basket; especially an old tired franchise like Tomb Raider.

I also hope Blast Works will finally hit the shelves in Europe as Eidos were to be publishing that here -- not that you'd know it, well, see above...

  • GDC: Wii now runs things stored on SD

  • Sean.Aaron 26/03/2009

I'm pretty happy with the way the update turned out. I still think they need to address the save data issue going forward, but it looks like that may only be possible by forcing some code changes to existing games.

I still think a flash drive could be in the future if it could be treated as transparently part of the existing flash by the system; I don't know if that's possible. Otherwise in a few years time we could have issues with storage just due to save files!

  • Sean.Aaron 25/03/2009

My understanding is that the load times have nothing to do with the SD drive or cards but Nintendo's decryption/encryption scheme, but be that as it may I'm very pleased and will be sure to run the update and play some WiiWare games I haven't loaded in months.

I've also just finished checking out more VC content to buy, so it's great timing!

  • Dead Space: Extraction

  • Sean.Aaron 23/03/2009

@Vertical Stand: smelly has a point. If a game allows free movement but forces a player forward via linear progression, then what difference does that really make in terms of gameplay? Add to the fact that it sounds like this game will have at least some degree of "free look" and it begs the question further. Reply 0

"Developers are stuck really, they appear to feel the need to add unnecessary layers of complexity to distance their game from what any Wii owner already has for free via Wii Sports."

I'd agree except that the Wii Sports Boxing wasn't that great (punching down to do a body shot != intuitive), so this really should have been a doddle without adding the extra motion layers.

Let's try, shall we? punch without button hold = body shot.

Punch whilst holding Z or B = head shot

Punch whilst pushing control stick up + c or A = uppercut

    wiimote+nunchuck together = block

wiimote+nunchuck together + tilt left/right or front/back = lean in different directions (add balance board support for better input!).

perform "wind-up" movement with nunchuk/wiimote followed by punch motion = Rumble sooper dooper attack.

    QA to ensure this works.

    Done.

"Stick me in this group, please. I don't claim that the Wii has a deluge of quality titles, but there are a reasonable number of very good games available, clearly."

My position as well. I really see no need for a second console (well, besides Japanese Wii I also have).

I'm really annoyed that this game fucked it up so badly. I don't get how that's possible. Surely all that was necessary was to use basic left and right punches with button combinations to pull off different kinds of attack -- if you cannot put the kitchen sink in, then don't, play to the strengths of the control system and recognise the weaknesses. This far into the life cycle of the system there is no excuse for a developer not to get this.

This is going to be better than is being made out. Check out the news at IGN.

Set in RE2 Raccoon City, but new environments and story bits -- not just a retrospective a la RE:UC, which is why it doesn't have the same name.

Also noteworthy is they're using Havok physics -- isn't this the engine that the Force Unleashed devs said they couldn't get running on the Wii?

  • Sean.Aaron 11/03/2009

@kangarootoo: it was a boxed title and is getting a sequel soon which will feature DLC and a method to share your custom levels using an expanded editing tool without use of friend codes (this will be awesome).

I believe Steven Spielberg was involved as a designer on the game (I'm pretty sure he came up with the concept) and he's also contributed to the sequel.

Go beyond the Atari 2600 to include the 5200/8-bit computer stuff as well and include as much 3rd party stuff (Imagic, CBS, Parker Bros.) as possible -- hell you might as well license the Atari stuff since Infogrames seems to be doing fuck all with anything outside of the name!
