@Max_Powers There are present day sections, as mentioned, but Desmond is more or less absent. Reply +9

    @Starmick Answers!

    1) There are trees sprinkled around the towns and islands to support the free-running but nothing like the frontier section of AC3.

    2) I would say it's much tighter.

    3) You can do hunting on the islands as well to support the crafting, but it's pretty much optional. You can buy hunting supplies (e.g. animal skins) in shops if you prefer, although they're a bit pricey.

@Golgo You can change outfits, some of which you unlock through the crafting system. I didn't look too closely at this part of the game though, so cannot confirm the presence or otherwise of parrots or Brian Blessed as an alternative dialogue option. Reply +3

@verynaughtyboy I played the whole thing on PS3 and it was generally solid, but there will be a Digital Foundry face-off later this week with the hard numbers and comparison videos. Reply +6

@SuperSoupy Hopefully those thousands of people will decide to start with Arkham Asylum, which is what they should do. Context is king - we can't review games in a vacuum. Reply +2
  • Mugwum 25/10/2013

@vert1go No, sorry. It's hyper busy at the moment for various reasons, so that one has been slightly delayed. It's coming though! Reply +1
  • Mugwum 25/10/2013

@JeremyNSL Ah, that's not what I said. I said that it might be nice to have more ranged options given the way the game is designed, but it's obvious why they don't do that because it wouldn't be true to the character. Sorry it wasn't clear. Reply +9
  • Mugwum 25/10/2013

@7M7 I would have given this game 7/10 anyway. As I said clearly at the end of the review, it lacks the spark of previous instalments. I couldn't give a toss whose name is on it. Reply +15
  • Mugwum 25/10/2013

@JeremyNSL I've finished both previous Arkham games, love the films, have never been a comic book reader. I felt qualified. Sorry you disagree! Reply +9
  • Mugwum 25/10/2013

@Triggerhappytel We're aiming to review Blackgate separately but didn't get code for it this week so it wasn't possible in time for launch. Sounds like a good way to do a handheld spin-off though, whether or not it delivers on that promise. Reply +1
  • Mugwum 25/10/2013

@figaro7 I'm afraid they didn't send me the Wii U version, but Digital Foundry will try to put together a face-off soon. Reply +3

Apologies for the absences! I've added Zelda 3DS and Rain.

GTA isn't on there because it's out before the Expo, sorry!

Hello! This wasn't a social experiment - I forgot to add the score in the CMS and then I had meetings after lunch and went straight into an interview with a developer until the end of the day, so I only realised this had gone up without a score when Dan Whitehead emailed me about it just now. Whoops! I am an idiot. Hopefully you all guessed it was an 8/10 anyway :-) Reply +6
  • UK chart: BioShock Infinite soars to its third week on top

  • Mugwum 15/04/2013

    @null Hey Deionarra,

Sorry you got an inappropriate link. We've flagged it up so it can be added to the blacklist.

For those wondering, the "You may also like..." section is powered by Outbrain, which we're trialling as a way of handling related content (the first row of internal links) and paid links (the second row of external suggestions). We have the ability to block domains and topics if we're not happy with the content being displayed (for example, we've blocked all the UK tabloids to avoid sexist/hate-mongering rubbish) but some slip through and we have to deal with them once we see them or they're pointed out.

Why have them at all, you might ask? For now it's an experiment. If we ultimately decide the balance is too hard to strike, or we just plain hate them, we'll get rid of them. But as our sales guys often have to turn down advert deals because I won't accept stuff like interstitials, advertorials or things that cover the whole frontpage content area by default (all pretty common on other gaming sites), when they find a passive and relatively benign way of bringing in extra cash I don't mind trying it. I still veto far more than I allow.

Anyway, we appreciate your patience while we find the balance and we'll do our best to reduce the number of inappropriate or irrelevant links to as close to zero as possible.

    Thanks,

    Tom

  • Sony tells Eurogamer: PlayStation 4 will not block used games

  • Mugwum 21/02/2013

@KanePaws I think you are right in that he is only applying the point to physical media here and now, but I can understand that. The physical media covenant between consumer and publisher is what I meant when I talked about the moral obligation in my interview question - I think when the terms are different and understood, as they are with digital content, that is a different decision for both parties. There are still issues to navigate there, but they are not as clear cut as they are with boxed games. Reply +8

    Hey guys,

I've been tied up with other things this week so only got a proper sense of the WarZ situation this morning. As soon as I did I spoke to our company sales director and he agreed to remove the ad campaign that's been running on the homepage.

    Hello!

Thanks to everyone who has voted so far and thanks if you've pointed out any lingering omissions/errors in the dropdown lists. Here's some amendments I just made:

    - Added Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge
    - Removed KillerFreaks From Outer Space
    - Removed Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
    - Added The Testament of Sherlock Holmes
    - Added Punch Quest
    - Added Machinarium PS3
    - Added Thomas Was Alone
    - Added Colors! 3D
    - Added Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward
    - Added Borderlands 2 DLC
    - Added Vessel
    - Added La-Mulana Remake
    - Added Resonance
    - Removed Double Fine Adventure lul

Phew! Sorry about those. Basically, we produce this list by sucking all the games with 2012 dates attached to them from our database, which gives us hundreds of lines to go over. I trawl through and make sure all the stuff I can think of is there, but it's hard to spot everything at a glance, and sometimes our db is a bit behind real life.

Anyway, if the changes made make you want to revise your submission, go ahead! We will pay attention to your final submission and ignore any others. And sorry for the inconvenience.

P.S. I just glanced at the voting so far and it's pretty interesting! You have good taste :-)

  • Mugwum 20/09/2012

    Hey guys,

We've been talking about this story and the reaction to it on our internal mailing list overnight. I'm sorry it's taken until now to post something in response to everyone's complaints.

Sometimes when we encounter something as self-evidently ridiculous, awful and depressing as Shag-A-Gamer, we look at it and think that it's sufficiently absurd to illustrate its own absurdity without needing any additional comment, so we just report it straight up and expect you guys to share the joke.

We certainly don't endorse this "service". Nothing could be further from the truth. If I could pour all the people involved in this pathetic, exploitative nonsense into a volcano and then throw in a bunch of angry flame-resistant sharks to feast on whatever atoms are left over once they melt into nothing, then I would do that.

However, the fact I'm having to come on here and point that out just goes to show that whatever original intent we had didn't translate into the published article. So I'm very sorry for anyone who was offended or disappointed by it. We won't be writing about this lot again unless there's a powerful reason to do so.

I also just want to add that we do read lengthy comments threads like this and we aren't blind to negative feedback. The reason it sometimes takes us a while to sort ourselves our and respond is that we like to discuss things as a team and make sure we agree on a course of action before jumping in.

    Anyway, point very much taken.

We were originally going to run the counterpoint to this article tomorrow, but in the interests of illustrating that we don't believe some of the evil things we're being accused of believing, we've popped it up now: Always Online: What Diablo 3's Battlenet Does Wrong.

@MattEvansC3 "Blizzard and Eurogamer can try to sugar coat it as much as they want, a compulsory always online requirement is a slap in the face for paying customers, especially those with capped data usage packages."

Yes, and the article doesn't say that it isn't or encourage always-online games.

@GamesProgrammer Totally agree. We just wanted to point out what you get out of it when you are in a position to use it as intended, because those things are valuable and make a brilliant game better.

With that said, there's no question that the always-online requirement is a heavy price to pay, as Oli points out. The justifications don't add up for me.
