I didn't claim that they have a right to copy it. It's more of a reason. If they are going to overprice software (and I don't think anyone can argue that 35 for a handheld game is nothing short of daylight robbery) then expect more people to head down the route of wooden legs and inflatable parrots on their shoulders.

Lower the cost of games to something more reasonable and you'll find that few people pirate games, profits will increase and you'll have a much happier customer base. I'm not saying that this will irradicate piracy, but it will at least reduce it by large amounts. People are *always* going to find ways around anti-piracy measures, what companies should focus on is discouraging them from copying games rather than trying to make the impossible possible.

Look at the music industry for example. They're only recently starting to embrace new technologies such as downloading music over the 'net. However, what they're still doing is continuing to overcharge people. 85p for an MP3? Cram that past your fat wallet and up your ass thankyou. There is no way I'm paying almost as much for a bunch of "1s" and "Os" as I would for an actual CD. Lower the cost to a more sensible 15p a track and you'll find that the vast majority of people will buy things through legitimate channels.

To say Sony 'deserve' to be hacked and pirated is like saying, you may put locks on your windows and doors but it just inspires me more to break in and steal all your stuff. If you got burgled would you blame yourself for making an effort to protect your stuff?

If I charged people 35 just to walk across my doorstep then I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to find alternative means to enter.

Low the price of games to something that resembles a sensible amount and you'll find that piracy will reduce dramatically.

That said, I'm sure the vast majority of people seeking to break through the firmware are those who want to run emulators rather than cracked PSP games.

When will someone develope a game for mobiles that is actually fun/possible to play on a mobile?!

3rd shooters JUST.DON'T.WORK. Driving games suck donkey balls. Sport sims? Give over. Puzzle games are the closest things they've got.

I mean COME ON, there's like a zillion cool flash games on the net, almost every one of which would work really well on a phone and help you while away a few minutes. Bring on the flash I say!

Nice review Kristan. It seems pretty fair based on the demo I've played. It has flaws, but the innovation makes you oblivious to them (almost).

Any chance you can give us an idea of how long the game actually is? I'm aware that other QD games (such as Nomad Soul) has day's worth of gaming, is this another biggie?

That's all I ask for, a decent tree. They've got water sorted, hell, some developers have even been able to recreate fire effects that don't make me want to hurl. But can anyone design a decent looking bush? Nope.

  • Mike_Hunt 06/08/2004

Once again though I wish just once I could see PC owners gushing about a game that didn't drive the PC tech tree through the roof, and wasn't FPS..

    huh?!

Firstly I think some of the latest games have been developed with scaleability in mind. Far Cry, Doom 3, HL2 can all be run on half decent machines. Secondly, what on earth is wrong with developers constantly pushing things forward?! That's something that should be applauded and not criticised IMO. It really isn't their fault that people are trying to run their games on ancient (in PC terms) systems. If upgrading your PC is something that bothers you, stick to the consoles for a hassle free gaming lifestyle.

I guess the reason that FPS games are so popular is that, when done well, you can be totally immersed and feel like you yourself are actually in the game.

An excellent and fair review Krudster. By someone who obviously appricated the game for what it was and not what they wanted it to be.

I still disagree with the torch comments - although your point on the combined use of single handed weapons such as the pistol was a very good one. Oh and good call on the lack of friendly marines fighting on your side, would've been a nice extra touch.

Anyway, for what it's worth I totally agree - A well deserved 9/10.

Mike, OFP is tense, but it still doesn't quite hit EVE's level. Don't forget in the later there's alot more at stake.

Agreed FWB. I wasn't trying to state that one was better than the other, simply that if you liked that aspect in EVE then you may well enjoy Op Flash, which offers the same thing. I'm also aware that UL is a fan of FPSs, another reason for the suggestion.

I really don't get this "this game is better than the other debate", specifically EVE and Elite. I've played both and I can assure you with 100% confidence that they are actually different games. Some people will like one, and others will prefer the other. A few will even enjoy both. But everyone is entitled to their opinion FFS. If someone doesn't like the game you like, deal with it and move on.

I've also played EVE, and enjoyed it for a time. The fact that almost every other ship is piloted by another human is fanastic, and it provides great story lines and events. Even after I stopped playing I still looked into the (now non existent ) EVE thread to see what was going on. I, like FWB, quit because it required too much time delivered on a regular basis. Something I couldn't provide. Oh and I also was disappointed that you weren't in direct control of your ship in EVE, but understand that this would have upset the balance of the whole modification/training system.

    [MH]

edit: Added punctuation as it looked like I was flirting with FWB!
