Don't agree with the sentiment of the article. I saw a lot of impressive software this E3 that I really want to play on PS4 or on something else like God of War, AC Egypt, Anthem, Sea of Thieves, Cuphead, The Artful Escape, The Last Night, Ashen. And that mouse adventure in VR!

For almost every console owner this has got to have been a stellar year already (my backlog is already incredibly long) with great software coming up.

I get the appeal of horror in VR but from a commercial standpoint it seems like a risky proposition. The VR install base is already small and people that want or can stomach in horror in VR is even smaller.

Resident Evil has the brand name and the novelty factor ('see if you can stomach this!') but speaking as a paying customer that is dying for new, AAA VR content, I'm staying away from fps horror style games.

Many people assume beforehand they will hate it (including me), but the boys road-tripping together is the best thing about this game. Within the hour they will have grown on you. It's charming and goofy.
I'm really liking the game. Yes, it has plenty of faults (especially the narrative) but it has that X-factor as is not like anything out there.

Good round-up but I really disagree about VR and PSVR in particular. Batman VR and Thumper VR rekindled my enthusiasm for games this year. It was new and it was very exciting.

And Rez VR is easily the game/experience of the year. As close to a religious experience you can get through the medium of games. People down on VR can't have played Rez VR.

  • Why I think big console game sales are down

  • Max_Powers 30/11/2016

Hard to make these claims when we have no concrete data. Are sales down? By how much exactly then? At retail maybe but we have no idea what percentage of sales is digital these days (personally I buy most games digital). It would be good investigative reporting if Eurogamer could get that data. This is mostly guessing and hunches and hard to draw a conclusion from.

It would not surprise me if sales are down though, just going by what the fellow core gamers group around is me playing, buying or not buying at the moment. Personally, I plan to pick up Dishonored 2, Civ VI, FFXV and probably Titanfall 2 before years end but there is just no urgency to buy them as I have so much to play still (I still have to start on The Witness, Inside, Dark Souls III and No Man's Sky that I bought but haven't even touched yet). Plus - and here does lay blame with publishers and developers - I have now learned to wait a couple of weeks after a game is launched before starting on it because most need at least 2 patches to make it playable. I don't have time for freezes and corrupt saves. I'll wait a bit thank you and enjoy that nice deep discount mere weeks(!)after launch.

I also think games just have longer active-lives now. Look at the last Rainbow Six game. Did soso at launch but the game was quality and Ubisoft have just grown the audience and sales for that game into a healthy ecosystem. The games press has already moved on to the next thing but these are the games people are playing. So Week 1 sales mean less I think. I certainly hope so for Titanfall 2.

I was most excited for PSVR this Q4 and that is maybe the only thing I bought launch day and was the only real game changer for me this year.

My biggest gripe is - like mentioned in the article - that who you are and what your motivation is, is set in stone right from the start. I had such a hard time getting into character and the motivation that I stopped playing a few hours in.

  • Max_Powers 01/07/2016

Using someonelse's IP without permission for monetary gain (the book is Kickstarted for money and sold) is clearly a rights infringement. Nintendo is 100% reasonable to act on this and even required by copyright law if they want to protect their IP. How Bitmap thought they'd get away with this without official license is beyond me.

Yes there are 1.000's of fan art and fan images on the internet for Nintendo and SEGA IP etc. That is all fine (well at least companies let it slide) until you start charging money for them at which point you are breaking the law. It's nice that you are a fan and want to make something nice but then a) license it or get permission or b) don't ask money for it.

For all the 'Nintendo duhduh' posters above: I'll make a line of t-shirts with images of Mario, Zelda etc. for profit without paying Nintendo a cent. That's alright with you lot right because 'everyone clearly knows these are not by Nintendo'..?

What @DonNorris said. Parenthood is now a theme because it is a stage in live a lot of game creators find themselves in.

Personally, I think keeping Kratos as OTT killing machine would have been a better direction to take. Just slightly dialed back a bit from the 100% psychotic Kratos in GOW3 who was very unlikable as a result. Let's just hope that they do a period-correct representation of what fatherhood meant back then, that would provide a fresh experience at least.

"And Kratos needs this depth - he is a relic from another era, when things like murder and 'hammer X to pleasure ladies' seemed fine, somehow.".

That is still fine, I don't see why it wouldn't?

  • Max_Powers 24/03/2016

Horror and scifi horror are niche genres that do not appeal to huge player bases so that genre choice will always limit your sales potential. For instance, I buy a lot of games but very rarely horror themed because at the end of a work day I don't want to sit at the edge of my seat for hours. I will watch a horror movie maybe but that is more passive and over relatively quickly.

If its gory horror your potential audience gets even smaller as there are people that can't stomach that. If its occult horror even smaller (as it will put off people who are religious for instance) etc. And - gut feeling - I don't think horror is a genre that most woman like generally.

    Firewatch has more mainstream appeal.

  • Chinese mining company buys Runescape dev for $300m - report

  • Max_Powers 15/03/2016

Chinese companies often do this (like the Russians) to try to get money out of the country as this is one of the few legal ways to do that for them. Chinese government has heavy restrictions on that.

Actual interest in Runescape is minimal I think but you never know.

Minecraft and the insane sale price was also a result of Microsoft having 1 billion euros parked in Europe and they needed a way to get that out without a heavy tax loss.

  • Max_Powers 11/02/2016

@Simatron3000 Winding down support for the Xbox One (The console, not the brand, not LIVE, not the ecosystem etc.) would indeed not hurt Microsoft at all. In fact it would financially and strategically make sense for them to do so. As you say, selling the box is hardly making them any money and spending millions of dollars promoting a console that will always be in 2nd place at best this generation makes no sense when they could focus on something new. The "Exclusives" strategy was always meant to get people to buy the Xbox One console. Better for them to cut that cord now and focus on some new initiatives like a cross-device Windows store or LIVE service, maybe a streaming device in the living room, VR or even a new, more powerful console (which I think is what everybody always wanted from MS anyway). I think the opportunity is there but to me it's clear the Xbox One console is a station passed. Reply -1
  • Max_Powers 11/02/2016

@DX12 What signals are Microsoft giving you that they are all in for the Xbox One for the long run? (The console, not the brand, LIVE etc.)

Everyone with even a little bit of business sense (and that has followed Satya Nadella) can see that Microsoft is moving away from the One console and that it makes sense to do so.
    Reply +5
  • Max_Powers 11/02/2016

With every single Microsoft exclusive now coming to PC this reinforces my thinking that MS has already given up on the Xbox One. No sense spending years fighting for 2nd place in two separate markets (console and PC) with a competitor that by now has an unassailable and widening lead.

I expect announcement of a successor to the Xbox One sooner than expected and at least support or major new initiatives for the One to die down rapidly.
