Most bosses in Dark Souls range from mediocre to incredibly bad, and none of them holds a candle against any boss from Demon's Souls. Bed of Chaos vs. Dragon God, nuff said. I sure hope the devs will go back to the drawing board in terms of boss mechanics for the next opus. Reply0
This compulsive obsession for 60 fps is quickly getting sickening. I'll take 30 fps The Last of Us against any 60 fps average shit any time of the day. Reply-2
The alleged technical issues were not the main reason why this happened. For better or for worse, Sony at some point must have decided that the game mechanics of The Last Guardian never worked as good as the ones from Ico and Colossus. I can't blame them. Most people expected another open world, instead Japan Studio essentially went for a reboot of Ico with a Colossus-size companion, which must have felt like a regression in terms of scope and ambition (and not mentioning the potentially nightmarish gameplay).
Well, so long Team Ico, and thanks for the wonderful ride. Reply+1
"You can say this is no worse than what Steam does."
This doesn't make Steam any more right. Steam's lack of digital license reselling system IS illegal according to European law. And sooner or later, even Steam will have to implement a license manager allowing you to resell your digital games. Reply+3
"Participating" retailers? Like in brick 'n' mortar shops? But what about eBay? Amazon Marketplace? Rakuten?
Besides, publishers have absolutely no legal right to impose a reselling fee on a specific copy once the original license has been sold by them (in Europe at least). Reply0
"Herzog Zwei is cited by many as the first true Real Time Strategy game."
Please stop this urban legend. There are many examples of true RTS precursors, chief amongst them being Nether Earth on the Spectrum (released two years before Technosoft's game). Herzog was a great series, but I'm tired of this revisionist crap. Reply-2
And that's where Gran Turismo miserably fails -- in the details. If you can call "details" such archaic elements as the sound engine and the collision engine (or lack thereof). In particular, the sound engine hasn't litteraly evolved since 1997. Just spend two minutes with a (admittedly not perfect) racer like Shift and you will understand what immersive audio experience means. Reply+1
So Ubisoft stole AC, fired Désilets, bought THQ, stole 1666 and fired Désilets again. I hope whoever runs this whore of a company can still watch himself in the mirror. Reply+40
Nice article Martin. Abel Gance rules -- bring on the BD!
I've been a gamer since the SEB Telescore times, and the last game I completed is Infinite on PS3. What this discussion reveals is that games are meant to be played on the dedicated hardware they've been designed for (which is why most modern games feel better on consoles than on PC, in spite of RAM limitations).
Likewise, scanlines are not just "oldschool". They are the gaming equivalent of film grain. They actually add information into the original pixel art. If you play a 2D retrogame on an LCD or even a progressive CRT (aka. VGA), you're missing half of what the artist intended to be seen.
"Just playing" is not enough. It's like saying "just watch Abel Gance's Napoleon on your smartphone". It just doesn't cut it. Reply+1
I'm on PC beta and while some improvements have been made since the dreaded alpha, I still loathe the quest tracker and the dumb regional map system (which tells you where your objective is, but not where you are). I'm also constantly switching between kbm and gamepad (MotionInJoy) for the sake of future console testing, and I have to say the interface is still a mess, especially on the pad. On the content side, most guild missions are boring filler affairs. Co-op is next to non-existant.
All in all, FF14 is a decidedly archaic approach to MMO. Still, I find myself willing to play it a little bit weekend after weekend (servers are usually only open two or three days per week). The environments are not too bad, and customization is limited but fun. Reply-1
