    @Dizzy
I think both consoles makers knew they sold us very mediocre hardware and that incremental upgrades are the way they wanted to go (to rip us off even more).
That's not what you've previously said, you've spent the past 2-3 years promoting the XB1 and slagging off everything Sony related. What about the magic of teh cloud that you used to go on and on about? It was the X1's secret weapon according to you!

But seems their marketing bullshit is working... some people are actually cheering for incremental upgrades for consoles. You can also thank the gaming press for their idiot stance on the technical features of games, instead of the actual gameplay.
Right, so you're highlighting the fact that they sold us mediocre hardware but now you're slagging off EG and the gaming press for highlighting the technical shortcomings? Make your mind up. Personally I find the PS4 to be decent enough, Uncharted 4 looks visually sumptuous and Ratchet & Clank runs bloody great. What's wrong with incremental upgrades, do you expect 7/8 years with the same box, that you just stated was mediocre, whilst tablets phones and PCs all leap ahead every year? Then we have VR which is demanding tech and 4K displays growing in popularity. You haven't got a clue.

  • How PlayStation Neo and the original PS4 will co-exist

  • IronGiant 21/04/2016

@Gemini42_ Based on what evidence? Also what business reason? Do you think they want to stop making money.. this is an incremental upgrade, not the start of a new generation. Reply +1
  • IronGiant 21/04/2016

@mateuszanatta The solution is simple, dont buy the Neo then, your PS4 will continue to play games and will be supported for years to come.

I like change and i like new gadgets so this suits me and im definitely buying one. Me having that choice of a PS4 or Neo doesnt affect your enjoyment of PS4 games one bit.

Console gaming is changing, all of the big 3 are planning for a more fluid landscape, just stop worrying and keep playing games.. isnt gaming about fun?
    Reply 0
  • IronGiant 21/04/2016

@mateuszanatta Are you joking? So in 1-2 years you seriously think the Neo will have sold over 40m units.. thats some good shit youre smoking.

Theyll be lucky to sell 4m.. and by then the PS4 base will be nearer 50m. Yup, at this point, when devs are making more and more money from PS4 software they will start gimping the PS4 version of their games. What utter nonsense.. the amount of doomsayers on here is hilarious.

So Sony, stop your plans.. MS forget about upgrading the XB1. According to the self appointed experts here the way forward is to stagnate. Stick with a 7/8 year lifecycle whilst PC gaming accelerates ahead along with tablets and mobile phone tech.

Dont try anything new, dont offer a choice just stick with the status quo.. a console is for life, not just 3 years.

@Fourfoldroot Crummy eh? In your opinion, im all for it if its the right price. Choice and competition is good for the hobby that we all love.

So buying an upgraded console after 3/4 years instead of every 7/8 yeard is akin to being a PC gamer? How so.. enlighten us oracle of gaming.

  • IronGiant 21/04/2016

@lovely-Che What have the DF face offs got to do with this? The PS3 was a bitch to work on, especially for 3rd party devs so the 360 was more often than not the lead platform. Hence the PS3 got the ports. Games built for the PS3 like TLoU and God Of War 3 were incredible.

The PS4 and Neo will exist in the same eco system, share libraries etc. Theres absolutely no reason or justification for the PS4 version to get shafted, it will share similar code and may even benefit from tricks/techniques that are in the Neo version. Lets face it the majority of console games achieve a steady 30fps at best so your thinking is that when the Neo gains market traction devs will let the PS4 games go unoptimised and framerates drop, to what 15fps? Poppycock sir.

  • IronGiant 21/04/2016

@lovely-Che When you look at the 40m+ current PS4 userbase vs what will likely be a modest userbase for the Neo where do you think devs are really going to keep their attention? They will obviously make more money from the PS4 owners than buyers of the Neo and for quite a long time yet.

The Neo looks to be a premium option, over the standard model, it will never achieve sales anywhere near the base PS4 but just like with PSVR its an option, a nice to have if you can afford it.

PC gaming has thrived for many years with gamers using a wide range of different graphics cards, amounts of ram, motherboards etc etc. With Sony its A or B, are you bothered about 4k and 60fps over 30fps? If not stick with a PS4 as it isnt going anwhere soon.

  • IronGiant 21/04/2016

@blackcurrant_tango Get a PS4 now and enjoy Uncharted 4, then if the Neo appeals when its actually released then trade up or sell on the PS4. What the Neo will do is stimulate buyers at the lower end of the market, those who dont care what framerates are as long as they can play Fifa etc. If the PS4 gets a half decent price cut they will fly off the shelves. • Revealed: Sony's plan for PlayStation 4K - codename Neo

  • IronGiant 21/04/2016

Interesting comments from Lorne Lanning and an insight into how long this updated PS has been in Sony's plans..

''[Do you think PS4k/XB1.5 is the likely future for the industry?]
Yes. And this goes to your question on VR (What’s it going to look like in five years?). The thing I’m pretty convinced about is that VR headsets are going to change at a similar frequency to how fast smartphones change. The headset is going to be upgraded at a rapid rate. I would say most companies making them are going to sell new, better ones just like you go from iPhone 6 to iPhone 7; they’re going to sell new, better ones about every six months.

Consoles are typically six years (five to seven years). I asked Yoshida a question at dinner a few nights before DICE 2015, I said “What does the PlayStation 5 look like?” and he said “You mean if”. It was a really interesting thing, he’s hinting at “we need to be more agile, none of us know what the future looks like, so how do we adopt to it faster?”. To me, that’s the sort of way he was thinking about it which I think is the right way to think about it. The idea that you’re going to release a piece of technology that lasts seven years into the future, I think it’s less and less viable even though the generations are lasting longer.

It seems like that’s in conflict, but when you look at generations of smartphones…And I’ll give you an example. We’ve talked to some of the biggest smartphone companies and what do they want? They want us to be releasing our new PS4/XB1 games titles simultaneously on their latest, most powerful smartphones, with almost the same image fidelity.

What’s going to happen is that smartphones will get progressively more powerful. We’ve talked to Japanese publishers like Square and they’re releasing on mobiles first and then come to consoles later. Not necessarily out of fidelity, but because that’s where their audience is''

    @George-Roper Hardly any.

Why would a slightly better specced Playstation convince console gamers to get a PC?

The PS4 will still play all the upcoming games and the Neo will play them better and be compatible with 4k TVs. Theres no correlation whatsoever to a mass exodus to PC.

@UKPartisan Who bemoans PC gamers then? If you have the time and money available to keep your PC up to speed with the latest and greatest tech then all power to you. Every console gen gets left way behind by advances in PC components so it's nothing new whatsoever, but well done anyway. A big pat on the back for predicting absolutely nothing new.

The initial outlay on an all-in-one console still stands.. it will play games, blu rays and digital media for years to come unless you think they will magically cease working overnight. Spending £300+ every 3/4 years does not correlate to how much it costs to keep a PC on the bleeding edge, you can easily blow 400 on a graphics card alone.

@Yautja_Warrior Good post, some common sense!

Every year a new iPhone/iPad comes out that plays all the old games smoother or faster. Every new PC graphics card pushes framerates and performance up.. this is no different. PC gamers using older tech still enjoy their games just at lower res/fps.

Too much whining in here! When MS announce something similar or an XB/PC hybrid then from the whinging a numbers of people here will throw the toys and pram out.

@cloudskipa So exactly what is MS's vision? The reactive company are MS who shat themselves at the PS4 reveal and have been playing catch up ever since.

They stand to gain more from a new hardware reveal than Sony. By their very nature multinational corporations like Sony and MS are not quick to get things done, this improved PS4 has not been thrown together at the last minute. For starters how far in advance do you think their manufacturing partners need notice of whats coming? Will you ever stop this willy waving on behalf of MS?

@Mr_Writer85 For a start PC tech, tablet tech, mobile phone tech is progressing rapidly each year. Why should a console have to be tied to a 5 year cycle, just because you want your 300 quid investment to last that long?

The idea/concept of console 'gens' is disappearing, each new model will be incrementally more powerful than the last.

Youll have to get used to it or get another hobby, times are a changing.

  • IronGiant 19/04/2016

@Mr_Writer85 Dont buy it then, i know plenty of people that will. The PS4 will happily co-exist this new model and still get all the games.

The 8 year long console cycles are over, MS will be planning something similar and the NX definitely wont be around for 8 years!
