I don't expect many to agree with me, but to be honest, hearing of a young guy receiving a custodial sentence for a non-violent crime doesn't really make me feel great.

I'm not defending what he did, and he should definitely be punished, but as others have said, perhaps seize his £400k and make him do some form of community service. Generally I just feel like prison should be for violent or repeat offenders of serious crimes, other punishments should be used where they can be imo.

  • Mass Effect Andromeda is another failure for trans representation

  • Gradius 29/03/2017

Krem is voiced by someone of the wrong gender though - Jennifer Hale in this case - which does continue to play into the wrong-headed idea that a trans person is someone merely posing as the opposite gender.
Being transgender doesn't automatically give you the voice/vocal tone of the gender you identify with, and since when did a voice actors gender, sexuality, race, etc, have to match the character they're playing? The key term here is "actor", Jared Leto doesn't actually have to be a psychopath to play the Joker, James Earl Jones doesn't actually have to be white to voice Darth Vader and Eddie Redmayne doesn't actually have to be trans to star in The Danish Girl. It's called "acting" for a reason, no?

@superstoned Oh I see, so let me just see if I have this right, you come in here preaching about how you have such immense privilege and how you're 100% "woke" to the plight of poor oppressed minorities, then end by telling an ethnic minority guy to be humble in your presence and never criticize you, even if what you say is clearly stupid. Seriously, you couldn't make this stuff up! lol I have to admit, that's pretty funny xD Reply 0

I really don't think there's anything to be gained by having a long drawn out argument over semantics. My original comment to you was, I believe, succinct and you clearly understood its meaning. You've apologized for your behavior and I'm happy to accept that as long as the apology was sincere (meaning you will abstain from similar behavior in the future), then we're all good.

Right now, as it exists in the world, white folk and male folk exist, and their mere PRESENCE is threatening to people of color, to people of female and other genders, to Muslim folk, to indigenous folk, etc.
Hi, person of colour here, and I'd just like to let you know that you're speaking utter nonsense, I'm not sure if you're very young or just trolling but I find your comments in this thread utterly ridiculous (verging on insulting). I do not find the 'mere presence' of white people in the slightest bit threatening. I can state with near certainty that I've lived a far more privileged life than you and I really do not need or want your pity. Do not presume to speak for me.

And before you come back with a response like "well maybe you've had a charmed life but many people of colour haven't", yeah, that's exactly the point, we're all individuals, we are not one homogeneous block. Stop treating us like one, identity politics are unhelpful. In the UK today, privilege has far more to do with what's in your wallet than what skin colour or sex you are.

  • European Commission to investigate Valve and five publishers over suspected geo-blocking

  • Gradius 05/02/2017

In terms of its impact on UK users of Steam, in a pre-Brexit world we fall under the EU antitrust rules, but in a post-Brexit world, we may not benefit from the Commission's ruling, whatever it may be.
You won't benefit from it either way. The prices in poorer countries will simply be raised which will price many of the people in said countries out of the market. This means diminished profits for devs, so guess what will happen next? That's right, game prices will get higher across the board as devs attempt to recoup their losses... This will end up as a negative for everyone involved.

  • Nintendo slashes Wii U sales forecast from 9m to 2.8m

  • Gradius 19/01/2014

I'm glad the Wii U is performing poorly. In my opinion it's not a strong product, Nintendo have to try harder. I mean what do they expect? They've put out an overpriced, underpowered system which is technically comparable to the over 8 year old hardware of the 360/PS3, furthermore after over a year on the market there are still literally only a few titles of any merit available.

Nintendo do not deserve success with this console, hopefully next time they will release something genuinely exciting that isn't technologically a decade out of date and actually focus on getting some good third party support...

People may vote me down for saying this but I say it because I don't want Nintendo to fail, I want them to get back on form.

@Ergates_Antius I prefer to go on facts rather than "well I was down the pub and me mate bob said it happened". If you can't personally explain the claims you make, well perhaps you shouldn't be making them, but that's just my opinion. Reply 0
  • Gradius 04/11/2013

@Ergates_Antius "women"? All women or just some women like good old Anita sarkeesian? I've spoken to plenty of women who're as sick of this "objectification in video games" debate as I am, in fact plenty of women have uploaded videos talking about their feelings on the matter on youtube.

I'm sure there are some women who dislike sexualised depictions of women in games, but there are plenty of women who have no problem with it or even like it, anecdotally my other half used to love the Soul Calibur character creator because she liked making over the top ridiculous sexy warrior women to play as.

Regardless, you strongly implied that objectification in video games is materially detracting from the quality of life of women, I'm just interested in what evidence you have to prove that claim, and your answer is "Well, women say it does"...hmm.

  • Gradius 04/11/2013

@Ergates_Antius I disagree with your see-saw analogy, perhaps it would have been more accurate 30 years ago, but these days if you watch daytime TV it is geared totally towards women with men often being devalued, objectified, etc, if you drive around London you see huge billboards of Beckham in his underwear, if you watch adverts on TV, more often than not, men are portrayed as the bumbling buffoons while women are portrayed as the smart vixens who get everything right, if you read magazines aimed at women, often men are objectified to no end. Men simply don't seem to complain about it as much.. Your argument seems to be "yeah but men don't matter so like whatever".

I also fail to see how sexualised depictions of fictional characters in comics or games are materially detracting from the quality of life for women, I think a lot of this is in your head to be honest.

@Ergates_Antius They complain about the depiction of WOMEN in magazines aimed at women (i.e. skinny/airbrushed/semi-nude models, etc). I've never seen large feminist campaigns to rein in the objectification of men within magazines like Cosmopolitan and other media aimed at women, if you can point me to a few prominent campaigns dealing with that specific issue perhaps I'll reconsider my stance on the issue. @Bander Sorry man but I have to disagree about that video being worth a watch, I don't believe that muscular or voluptuous video game characters are "damaging" to anybody. In my opinion people really need to get over this idea that people form expectations in reality because of the way video games look. Also that guys critique on how violent Joel is in TLOU is demented, Joel lives in a kill or be killed environment, so when necessary he kills in which ever way he can, seems like a no brainer to me... • Apple iPad 4 review

  • Gradius 13/01/2013

"See, your corporate pride is so strong that you have incorrectly assumed that I'm some advocate of a rival to your brand worship."

If you had the capability to read you'd have seen that I stated I've just bought a Nexus 4 which is excellent, I have no allegiance to any specific brand or OS, etc.

Your skewed definition of what is or what isn't a "vanity product" is irrelevant to me and everyone else but you. So I won't enter into that.

"See, for me personally, I'm not bored of reality. I like to look and interact with people and loved ones instead of spending my life looking at a screen."

Says the man having a conversation on a gaming forum. lulz. Owning a smart phone or tablet device doesn't necessarily mean you spend any longer using a computer, it just allows you to use a computer at your own convenience, being able to catch up on work emails, etc while you commute is time efficient and actually free's up time to spend with loved ones & friends, etc. Perhaps you're unemployed and have no need to juggle your time, but to many busy working people this convenience is an improvement. This has nothing to do with "vanity", my time is important to me, portable tablets/phones free up a little extra of that time.

"I can look at a screen at my computer, I don't need to have one at hand 24/7. Neither do you in fact, you have one because someone convinced you that you needed one"

I don't NEED a tablet, I don't NEED a phone, I don't NEED a PC, I don't NEED a games console, I don't NEED a house, but then it depends on your definition of "NEED", I don't NEED these things to live, however I do need them to fulfil certain tasks in a certain way, so what's your point? Or do you live in a cave with only enough food, fire & water to keep you warm, fed, watered and hence alive? No, didn't think so...

"If I wanted to do music, I'd probably use an instrument and play to people in reality."

Cool story bro, some of us however are more advanced and would rather play our instruments while recording them into a sequencing device in order to layer instruments and vocals to create a more intricate sound, or produce a modern piece of music, but hey, if you'd rather play your kazoo to your mum and her Bingo pals, that's your call, go for it.

    And finally -

"Why would I know anything about Android apps?"

If you have no clue as to what these devices are capable of or what people use them for, then you have no authority to speak on their usefulness. A normal person might consider a surgical instrument to be largely useless, however, a surgeon will be able to make great use of this tool. If you're just some anti-technology weirdo then I really don't see what you're doing on a gaming site. I'm left wondering what devices/computers/consoles you do have? Are they also "vanity products"?

"Do you 'it has a beautiful screen' losers realise that most tech products released since the 'Retina display' have actually had a better screen than it?"

Even if that were true (which it really isn't), why would that stop the iPad having a beautiful screen?

Regardless, the first "Retina display" iPad was released almost a year ago, there have been plenty of tablets released since then and to my knowledge the only comparable device with a comparable display is the Nexus 10, which does indeed have a higher res display, although it lacks in contrast and can appear washed out, so it's a trade off, you could quite easily argue that either screen is "better" or "worse".

It's cool though, your iPad envy isn't really a surprise, with you being a Mancunian I wouldn't expect you to be accustomed to having nice things.

@Darren I got the cheapy 16GB wifi only version for £399, streaming works fine but file copying sucks balls, basically everything has to go through iTunes, which is a pain in the arse, but once you accept that drag 'n' drop (from PC to iPad) doesn't work and iTunes must be used, it's not so bad, basically you get used to it. And yes, screen aspect ratio isn't as good for movies as you do get black bars, however the screen shape works out much better for reading, also the selection in the app store really is great, not to mention that many of the cross platform apps I've tried work much better on iPad Reply 0
  • Gradius 22/12/2012

@Darren I'd go with the iPad, honestly I've always been an Android kinda guy, before last month I'd never owned a single Apple product, but recently I wanted to update from my Samsung G-Ace and my Galaxy Tab, and it just so happened the the new Nexus toys (10 & 4) came along at the right time, anyway, cut a long story short, I got the Nexus 4, great phone, Android 4.2 is lovely, but I didn't manage to get the Nexus 10 before it sold out, so instead of waiting I went and bought my first ever Apple product, the iPad4, Sadly I fucking love it, iOS is more locked in than Android but it's also smoother and more intuitive, and honestly I'm now enjoying the best of both worlds, I certainly don't regret giving the iPad a chance, and yes I used to sneer at Apple but I can't deny the iPads qualities, it's a really, REALLY nice piece of kit to use.
