I remember when EG used to be a credible site. Its absolutely pathetic and tiresome these days. Crap and late for news, awful, messy and cumbersome front page design, reviews that make no sense or have clear inaccuracies, articles written exclusively for flamebait and completely lost that community feel.

Its a sad indictment to the rest of "gaming journalism" that theres not much better out there hence me checking back here almost out of muscle memory. When a site like Gamespot has more credibility, maybe its time to call it day.

Hey rauper, do you still have Gestalt in your Rolodex? Give him a shout so you can arrest this slide into complete self parody.

Edit: Oh and don't even get me started on the "funny" videos. Rather than making those, why not do some decent journalism?

  • Govt to axe boring school ICT courses from September

  • Furbs 11/01/2012

    @markyHD

If those skills can be learnt quickly by 11-13 year olds, why do we not see any evidence of that in the work place? I'm talking about a wide selection of people from different backgrounds in a relatively "decent" area of the country and its certainly not down to laziness.

Oddly enough, they can do some fantastic things with clip art, but ask them to do format tables, apply a filter in Excel or even set an Out of Office and you'll often get a blank look.

I do agree with you though, teaching those skills "seperately" outside of the rest of the curriculum is the wrong approach as these days it needs to be more holistic and so computers should be standard almost in every classroom, not just the IT room (that might be the case, been a few years since I left), but theres obviously a massive cost implication there which the govt will have no inclination to tackle.

Bit of a worry. I run a support desk for an insurance company with approx 150 staff and the levels of even the most basic computer understanding for standard staff is minimal at best and not useful to most employers.

Using Word and Excel (which can be transfered easily to other similar applications) and basic Windows skills (I know there are other OS's out there but Windows is a good a place to start as any given its market position) are vital in modern society, far more than programming, although obviously this has its place.

I think thats where the govt is getting this wrong. ICT and Programming are two totally seperate aspects, which is why most companies have a seperate development team and don't get programmers to provide desktop/server support. Its also why I was totally turned off ICT at school because I had no interest in programming (at my school in the 80s you either did coding in BASIC or spent the lesson playing crappy BBC games).

Whats the use in teaching someone to create an animation or webpage if they don't even know how to run a spell check or do basic spreadsheet calculations? Whilst there is a wider problem with the encroachment of private sector in to the education system, Word/Excel/Email/Browser skills are as important to today as literacy and numeracy and should be treated as such.

Xerex's identikit EA comments are the exact irony I was talking about. He's as much an anti-EA fanboy as he is a Microsoft one.

I love how people will trot out "same old shit from EA" with regards to this when its only similarities to the NFS:U series is a) its from EA b) its got cars in it c) you can put stickers on them. Fuck me, I'm really worried about Forza 3 now which no doubt Xerex will get wood over.

So its not a great game (although this is the worst review I've seen from it so far), criticise it for that, not the same boring comments. Honestly, its the same comments thread for the past four years.

/cue some numbnut saying its the same game for the past four years despite my points above.

Theres a certain irony in the same comments appearing year after year about EA bringing out shit year after year.

FIFA, Tiger Woods, Madden, the Battlefield Series, Fight Night, Skate, Crysis - thats a hell of alot more consistent output than most studios publish in a single year.

Just because you dont like the genres doesnt make it shit, the same way as I dont like games involving Italian plumbers.

As a work in progress this could set up next years quite well. I thought the demo showed some potential...the Nevada race was much more in keeping with the original NFS and NFS 2. If they can use this as a platform to build on, like they did with FIFA 07, improve the handling and framerate then I'll certainly give next years some attention.

And yeah, I agree with you Tahla, its going to be quite difficult for EA to decide what direction to take the series...at the moment its a bit of a mishmash.

Yeah but its what kangarootoo was saying...he makes decent (if you like the genre) games, but not "wow" ones which is why he should wind his neck in.

Fable was a decent enough RPG (if you like them), but a "wow!" game would have hooked me in and made me finish it. The last RPG's to do that were FFVII and Vampire:Bloodlines.

I've never understood supercancel. Why not just let the player move where they want when the ball is in flight? Ok it might take some getting used to, but isnt that one of the things people like about PES anyway?

I'm not getting into the FIFA/PES debate, but one of the nice features of the "current" gen versions of 06 and 07 was that on the whole it lets you move the player where you wanted when the ball was in the air. I dont understand why the PES/nexgen FIFA engines feel they need to move your player for you.

Although this is EA here. Much as I like the FIFA games, some of the omissions they make are very much of the "wtf, why isnt that in there?" ilk :)

Them being coy about it doesnt sound good though :( They did the same with skill moves last year when asked. Its a real shame if they dont do it, as the system they have for Tiger Woods 08 sounds brilliant.

Maybe you're overanalysing the 22 page thing? Maybe its just there to show how much thought they've put into it.

Only one of which (ie players) is having an effect on the ball at a time. Not to mention its usually only rudimentary AI if the players are not near the ball.

How do you know how much more complicated it is? I doubt the FIFA physics are anywhere near 360fps, nor exactly how accurate they are. Lets not kid ourselves...air pressure and ball pressure are constants, so its bullshit mentioning those, but otherwise you're basically just dealing with a snooker simulation with maybe half a dozen AI characters moving at the same time. Archer McLean managed some pretty shit hot physics on a 7(?)mhz Amiga 15 years ago.

Dont forget also, FIFA 08 is basically the culmination of a 3 year development cycle. FIFA RTWC, FIFA WC, FIFA 07 and UEFA CL have basically just been beta tests for 08, slowly evolving, with each one having increased physics. Its not like they've suddenly just added it since the last FIFA.

The thing that made you look a fuckwit though was the sarcastic comment about design pages reflecting quality, when noone said it did.

  • Furbs 01/06/2007

Doesnt sound that much more complicated than Forzas physics, and no doubt they've scalped a load of stuff from other EA sports titles.

Maybe because they can do it, and you cant, is why you arent working for one of the worlds biggest developers? :P

I can see newcomers to PC gaming paying for it. Things like ingame browsers and XFire are all well and good, but still not what I consider to be that straight forward for a beginner.

It'll be interesting how they create a "consistent set of experiences" though, given the non-standardisation of PC games. I guess they can insist on that level of standardisation by withholding the "Games for Windows" logo, but will devs/pubs care enough if it means they have to do a little bit more hoop jumping?

"Furbs, it's absolutely clear that you have no idea what you are talking about. Essentially the game was made by academics for academics. An assistant professor for christs sake. Its an artifact of game research whose horisons are obviously far further than you will ever be able to see. The fact that a few pre-adolescents have played the game and missed the point is meaningless. The generation of this very debate is the point of this game. And i might add that reading a few ten year olds forum posts does not amount to "knowing anything about it". You most certainly are condemning it with the most fragile justification. "

Fishtank, according to what I've read, it was started by him when he was in high school. If you want to call him an academic for that reason then fine, but I'm afraid I wont agree with you. If you'll also go back and read the EG article, you'll notice the Assistant Professor has nothing to do with its creation, but it merely a supporter of it from a theoretical point of view. Now either the article has it wrong, or you ought to be careful throwing around "you dont know what you're talking about" comments.

With regards to "a few ten year olds", I dont believe I'd stated where I'd been reading the debate about the game? Its certainly on a par with the usual level of comments on the front page of EG, so again, its you thats jumping to conclusions without having a clue beyond the interpretation you want to apply to fit in with your argument. I never played Rise of the Robots. Does that mean that I cant reach the conclusion that its a stinking pile of shit and without merit when every comment I've ever read about it says otherwise?

Biggles, to be honest, the photos and police reports thing that you've just described there is exactly what a teenager who thinks a high school slaugher is cool would do.

Its the whole reason places like Rotton and Ogrish exist. Is it really only half an hour of game time showing/explaining their movitivation for the killings? That to me says he really didnt give a shit about showing that side of things.
