Now in my 40's, an age when I thought I'd be doing something far more sophisticated with my leisure time, I find myself still playing video games. Why? Because at their best they can be moving, involving, tense and as good a medium for exploring what it is to be human as any book or film.

Of course at their worst they can be cynical trash pandering to the worst instincts of the pigsty, but there you go.

If you're lucky they'll just entertain you for a while, and allow you to do extraordinary things in a world without real consequences.

Why do I care enough to comment? Because popular culture is both the mirror and the shaper of the public psyche. Even the trivial has resonance, and one should strive for the best in all things.
