  • Dgzter 29/04/2013

Hmmm, was their initial kickstarter video the one that was a load of pretentious shite? I seem to recall seeing something that was heavy on the verbose rhetoric and pseudo-intellectual terminology, but perhaps I'm thinking of something else.

I quite liked Ecco back in the day. Was a youngster and there was something quite atmospheric by that ambient soundtrack on my cousin's TV/megadrive.

Loved Ultima when I was younger; played V on my Dad's work 'laptop' and have some very fond memories. Also remember getting Ascension on a later birthday and loving the box art and cloth maps. Yay for cloth maps!

BTW what IS the deal with these kickstarter pitches and their autocue? I feel like I'm always being spoken to by someone that constantly squints over my shoulder (presumably in search of more intelligent conversation).

  • Dgzter 04/05/2012

Fucking Hero engine; what a joke...the only thing I can say in its favour is that it ruined SWTOR for me in record time, i.e. before I actually had to uncover the incredible depths of the game's banality for myself.

On topic: this sounds utterly uninspired, by the numbers, and so, so , so unnecessary.

  • WOW: Mists of Pandaria Preview: Blizzard's Eastern Promises

  • Dgzter 19/03/2012

I played WoW since launch: 4.5 years solid, then sporadically after that (on and off for a few weeks/months etc.) due to RL responsibilities, and now I haven't even logged in over a year. I don't know if I outgrew the game or the game went in a direction that eventually put me off (although I tend to remember the fun times more than anything else), but there is absolutely nothing about MoP that makes me think about picking it up again when the time comes.

The only possible exception would be for the sake of levelling up my old toon. I'm not even sure why, but maybe just to say he made it through from initial vanilla to the most recent iteration (again not even sure why this has the slightest residue of seeming important). I have no interest in the grindfest anymore; the constant dailies and faction grinding that seemed so important when I was a bit younger and really into the game just seems utterly wasteful and pointless now.

I like MMOs and I think I could definitely get back into one in the future (time permitting etc), but every one I've tried since WoW failed to captivate me, most recently SWTOR. I think it would really need to be something massive that would bring me back.

Had fun times though; hope those that still do enjoy the expansion.

Nice little piece of nostalgia; when I was 12/13 I remember going into HMV with my parents and convincing them to buy Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within. The box cover and FMV clips printed on the back were epic!

  • Dgzter 06/03/2012

I couldn't give a fuck who I'm killing if it's suitably narratively contextual, but this was woefully 'Meh' in my honest opinion. The setting doesn't interest me and the over-arching story narrative was already weak at best, so my desire to see it out is minimum, especially when coupled with my lack of enthusiasm about the thrust forward in the historical timeline. The series should have stayed within the boundaries of the crusades or at the very least in the Middle Ages; I just really hope we aren't going to find the ultimate AC denouement in a fucking modernized setting a few years from now. What a waste of a great original premise. Reply +2

You're a fucking retard mate. I actually like the game, but your slebbering, stomach-cringing fanboyism on these forums is simply nauseating. Just because you don't happen to be suffering the crippling performance issues that many others are doesn't invalidate them.

I've managed to soldier through with the single-player so far (FPs, WZs, OPs etc are all completely unplayable for me), but they won't keep my subscription if they don't address some of the abysmal performance issues (memory leaks, low gpu & cpu usage etc.).

Oh, and I've actually not been able to play for 4 days now: tried to get off on a particular planet to do a quest but get constantly stuck on the loading screen for said planet. Would be real nice if Customer Service could get back to me on this issue...in the next few weeks or so.

  • More SWTOR controversy as unsubscribe tab disappears

  • Dgzter 19/01/2012

Thankfully I cancelled mine only a few days after launch; I enjoy the game but can only viably play the solo-content due to horrendous performance issues (low fps, micro-stuttering etc), which simply does not justify a monthly sub.

I'll be happy to return if they optimize the engine, eradicate the memory leaks and find a solution to the low GPU usage, but until then...

The forums are still absolutely fuming with people, with PCs ranging from low-end to NASA-grade, that are having basic issues with performance and playability (the chap from Bioware's invented '5%' remark is looking more cringeworthy day by day), so the fact that they managed to roll out a patch that has degraded performance even further, coupled with introducting several new bugs and potential exploits, right before the initial 30-day period runs out, is absolutely lamentable.

I'm actually still a bit surprised that the performance issues aren't getting more press - it may only be affecting a minority, but the size of that group seems to be growing minute by minute (12th iteration of the 'Horrid FPS' thread on their forums?).

Still no fix for the horrendous FPS issues suffered by many - I believe the relevant thread on their Customer Support forum is now in its 8th iteration.

The heroengine they are using is poorly optimized and sadly I wont be subbing after the initial 30 days has passed unless they address this issue - shame really, I've really enjoyed what I've seen, and the small parts that have been remotely playable for me, so for.

  • Capcom: Resident Evil 4 and 5 didn't ditch horror

  • Dgzter 01/11/2011

Resident Evil is truly one of my favourite games; I've played through it so many times, for nostalgia, for scares, for speed runs, for knife runs, for kicks. The game exhilarates me in ways that I can't really describe, perhaps can't even justify. It has a special place in my gaming heart (along with Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within). There is something about the premise, the structure, the gameplay, the monsters, the typewriter save system, the pseudo-mythology, the B-movie acting and voiceovers, the basic lateral-thinking puzzles, and the frantic conservation of ammo that captivates me. And, of course, the music: the theme for the Save Room - I'm a fucking agnostic, but if there is a heaven THAT's the tune that would be on repeat!

I can still feel that heartbeat in Resi 2; it's a dim echo of a forgotten past in 3 and Code: Veronica. In 4 and 5, it's the haunting presence of an exemplary forbear, forever frustrated behind the veil of history, looking crestfallenly on the banal mediocrity of its progeny, leaving us with only this profound, whispered sentiment: they're fucking shite!

I actually agree about the 2 UIs. It seems quite small and pedantic, but having a clumsy, blocky UI on my PC game, which was clearly designed for a console version, really fucking annoys me.

With regards to Elder Scrolls in general, I'm a bit of a cliche: loved Morrowind, but could never really get into Oblivion. The level scaling, ultimately empty world and fast travel put me on the wrong footing from the start.

  • Dgzter 17/02/2010

    @labbal

Erm...no. I have absolutely no desire to bring the matter of your sexuality into this. Why would I? Unless you're of the opinion that any proponent of feminism, or indeed anyone intrested in discussing certain issues through the lens of feminism, is homosexual? Or worse, you actually think that I hold such contentions? On either count you are in error.

You ask what could be in the narrative context to justify the way the scene is shot. The truth is we don't know yet and therefore I shall reserve judgement. Perhaps you'll be proved correct and the scene will be inappropriate and gratuitous. Perhaps not and it will be justified, potentially even argued to be an attempt at social commentary. Perhaps, as Mr Bigglesworth suggests, Cage is simply not as gifted a director and the scene suffers for this. Either way I believe it is doing the game, Mr Cage, and perhaps even yourself, a disservice to dismiss the game off the cuff for what is ultimately, at this stage, conjecture. Just my opinion of course.

  • Dgzter 17/02/2010

    @lasersrule

While I'll concede that Cage often gets carried away with his rhetoric, I disagree that he is undermining himself with the examples you cite. In my opinion giving literary construction to issues such as the objectification of a female character is perfectly legitimate provided it is in a justifiable narrative context.

Has it crossed your mind that perhaps by employing scenes as mundane as the character taking a piss or being forced into a sleazy striptease Cage could be attempting to provide commentary on the banality of said objectification? I'm not actually arguing this is the case, and perhaps I'm giving Cage too much credit, but I'm certainly not going to dismiss the title based on the fact that a few scenes from the game, taken in isolation and analysed without context, have prompted certain people to call Cage a mysoginist and disregard his game as purile teenage sexism.

I've got to say, from looking at various videos etc, that the game looks surprisingly charming. If it does prove to be MMO-lite (I'm not passing judgement) then it could well be what I'm looking for at the moment, as the best I can probably commit to is a fairly accessible game which I can mess about with two or three times a week and just have some fun.

I found MW to be completely overhyped and far too short of a single-player campaign. As such, I haven't bothered to pick up MW2 after the reports of an equally brief (if not even more so) single-player element. I like the FPS genre, even in its overtly saturated state, but I have no interest in the multiplayer side of things and, therefore, struggled to get too excited over MW2.

I also found the use of that Eminem song in the promotional advert to be rather crass, and I got exceptionally pissed off by the reaction, from the gaming community, to the Airport level: a huge amount of idiot fanboys who couldn't seem to fathom the fact that the debate was not about the old cliched 'video games can make people commit atrocities' argument, but rather about the potentially cynical inclusion of a scene, which lacked any sense of narrative context, in order to provoke controversy.

9 is a very good score, but I felt the rhetoric should have emphasized the MP a tad more, as surely this was how it was ultimately graded, for I fail to see how such a short single-player campaign can merit a 9.
