I didn't even know this existed but I wish I'd known before so I could've pissed about with it, might've been fun when I was in my early 20s and used to engage idiots online.

@renzollama the fact that a lot of its systems were obscure and could only be fully explored if someone told you or you looked it up already mark it as a bit hard to get into. This is coming from a level 400 player too. Reply +1

Always wanted to play journey but I've often been underwhelmed at the popular indie releases of recent years like flower and braid and gone home so I never did buy it, even when it was £4. Grateful to try it.

I read his blog and it was very sad. I know that time heals from personal experience but there's always a scar. Best wishes to all concerned and nice one from EG and all the people for showing such consideration and thought when speaking about what seemed to be a thoroughly good guy dealt an unimaginably shitty hand by life.

That's bollocks. Most of us who play FIFA now have come from PES, I know I did. I swore FIFA was crap, but surprise surprise, just trying the demo out for 08 made me realise it was arguably a superior football simulation (which is what I play footie games for - I know not everyone does and I acknowledge FIFA is seriously flawed in some ways). Now it's pretty much indefensible to argue that PES is better, but believe me, I have no loyalty to FIFA whatsoever. If the demo was out for the 360 I'd give it a fair whack and if it's better, I'd buy it. I don't know if PES 12 or FIFA 12 is better. Like most people I'll try the demo, play my friends' copy and whichever one is better, I'll buy.

Past experience has told me that FIFA is the better football game for me, so I keep buying it. It's got sod all to do with having some sort of bizarre boycott of Konami's game, you should get that out of your head before people think you're weird!

One should be wary of making the comparison to music. The Beatles don't sound as far apart in terms of sound quality even to Opeth. Maybe a few notches. Same with lots of 60s music, and 70s.

The difference between GTA III and GTAIV is absolutely massive, technologically wise. It's like the Beatles being recorded in the back of a Vauxhall Astra on 2 tracks directly onto casette via a Woolworths microphone, and then modern music being recorded in a fancy studio. The changes are so huge because I don't know how settled the medium is yet. The leaps and changes from the games industry are massive from generation to generation and until that settles down I will always view older games more prejudicially. Don't get me wrong, I still play Saturn Bomberman, Panzer Dragoon and the odd silly shareware game made by Ambrosia software for the Mac, but generally games are better because of the experience they offer and the parts of the consciousness they can stimulate. Think the element of 'escape' is even more compelling than it ever was. I can appreciate the cleverness and brutality of some of the old games, but that's more of an admiration than a full 'I love this' that I get from Oblivion, for instance.

That's why I prefer to play newer games, anyway.

Great article though, really good read.

sg - Surely it's a time thing? I've been a student for four years, and I got sucked into games like Mass Effect, Red Dead Redemption, Fallout, Fable etc during my time studying, but now I'm working I play a quick game of Fifa, or play a mission of Call of Duty because I just don't have the time for mammoth gaming sessions anymore. i rarely feel compelled to write that I enjoyed a piece like this, but I really liked it. Completely identify too, I feel the exact same way. I spent days on end playing that game, getting up to 2032 in CM 01/02. 2008 was the last game I invested any real time in, and the 3D match engine and over-complication has ruined the game for me. Sure, I can turn it off, like I can turn off my assistant manager whispering in my ear that a player is looking tired (FUCK OFF), but it makes me feel like the game has left me behind and that I should be playing the game with all these stupid additions. Shame. Probably for the best thought, I'm in my mid-twenties now and don't have the time to play this sort of game. Reply 0

When they say you can take your 'virtual pro' online, that isn't in normal ranked matches, is it? I imagine there's a separate online section for the virtual pro mode, as I am not interested in playing against people who are Real Madrid but with a forward at 99 in all online games. Hopefully that isn't the case for the ranked matches, though.

Anyway, fantastic review. I'll be picking this up on release day, for sure.

You do not need a 'boss' battle to cap off a great game, what a load of shit. What is this, 1990? It, if at all, needs a fight, conflict or resolution, of ANY proportions, that means something to the story. Fable 2 had that in bundles. Reply 0

Okay, I'm not going to waste my time with this. I've been buying CM and FM since the glory days of 1997 - 2002, and this is the first time I've typed in 'Football Manager 2009' into thepiratebay. I don't know if I'm going to actually download it, but it appears to be out now on torrent sites so maybe this time my hand will be forced. I'd hate to, though. I may just not bother with it. • The Art of Fable 2

  • BTBAM 01/10/2008

I was gutted when I completed Fable 1. Not because it was too short, like people have been saying above I did EVERYTHING in 17 hour, but because the game was over. I played it through from start to finish about 12 times, and each time I enjoyed it as much. I just don't do that with games anymore. So if Fable 2 comes close to that, I'll love it.

It looks beautiful, I loved Fable 1, I spunked everywhere when the Lost Chapters were announced, and I'm getting ready for my aching ballsack to spurt everywhere again n three weeks. After virtually four years waiting for this I'm expecting it to be the escape from the real-world I so sorely need after cutting down my weed intake, completing Mass Effect, Oblivion, Call of Duty 4, Halo 3 and all the other big-hitters of this generation and being wholly underwhelmed by games like Bioshock.

XdarXideX - I know what you're saying. I've kept playing it because the trade in price wasn't worth it, so I'm just muddling through. Level 20 now and starting to get more in the groove - I'm getting a bit fed up of the game itself but the fact I can have a race or make my Pinatas stars or go to the desert and pinarctic is keeping me playing, plus because I played the first game to death I'm now realising the benefits of taming the sour creatures and saving money and selling. I have over 60 grand, and it's quite fun really. Just taking a while to get into the swing of it, but it's a sweet natured game. Reply 0
  • BTBAM 07/09/2008

Nah, still no good. Viva Pinata has lifted her skirt, bent over and showed me her arsehole. There's nothing more to do or to see, and the rewarding is limited and frustrating. Played it with my girlfriend and we both found that the novelty and charm has gone. If I hadn't played the first one it'd be okay. Returning it today. Reply 0

  • BTBAM 07/09/2008

Played it for a little while last night. Remember when you first saw the Whirlm in the first game? None of that magic when the 'Bispotti' appears. I resented having to jump through hoops in 'Langston' to be told what to do. I want to build a Whirlm home and get cracking. The races are shit, the new regions are tokenistic at best, and I resent having my hand held for the duration of the time I spent playing it. I trapped a Pinata before I was instructed on how to do so, because I read the challenge and went for it, then accepted. The game made me do the whole thing again!

Flawed as fuck. It's got none of the magic of the first game. All that needed to be done was the pacing to be sorted out so that the beginning isn't so overwhelming and the end isn't so bloody boring and spaced out, and the irritating 2 dimensional shop characters given a couple more lines to say and I'd have been happy. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

    Awful game.

  • Football Manager 2009

  • BTBAM 08/09/2008

Like I said on another FM news article - I can't buy it due to my studies. I imagine the 3D match engine will not quite relate to the commentary being shown, though it'll be nice to know what happens on the pitch when the commentary says 'Moukoko' or 'Saivet' shoots!...' and you hear nothing more about it.

It sounds wonderful though, and as soon as I've finished my degree I'm going to buy this and spend ages looking at every single youth international team in the world trying to find the next young gem and putting together a team by not spending more than 5 million a season. As always playing as my team Arsenal I can't not, can I?

I hope in this game Van Persie is actually good, though. He'll have the injury proneness of Robben, but his ability never reflects his talent in FM games, meaning I have to sell one of my favourite players the second I enter the game.

The only other thing I'd like improved is the variety of press interaction with regard to answers to questions - 5 is a good amount, but always issuing a strong statement of my teams ability just so I can fire up Micah Richards before every single damn game is a bit tiresome.

Actually last thing - I've won 7 back to back premierships in a row, but fell out of the League Cup in the third round a few times. T he board really wouldn't give a shit - that should be changed. I've never had my board delighted with me, even when I've won everything in one season. Peter Hill-Wood dosn't give a damn about Arsenal success, so why does he in my game?

How the fuck do you have that willpower and can I have some?

I'm gutted I can't buy this game, but I'm in the 3rd year of my law degree and if I want to be a lawyer in 2 years time I'm going to have to avoid this game. I also have a girlfriend and a flat to maintain, and I don't want to end up in debt living in a bush with no one around mebecause of this. FM08 once I'd got into it destroyed my 2nd year of uni, and has resulted in countless occasions of my girlfriend having a cold or feeling rough making me strangely happy so I could have another few games to satisfy my desire.

This game's been ruining my life since 1998, and long may it continue.
