YOU don't like it, that's all. I think the Gears games are exceptional and have oodles of atmosphere, polish, character, a decent story and some fantastic fights. Great games and I'll never understand why people are so against them.
The grey/brown criticism is very petty!

I demand a Harry Hill-esque "FIGHT" at this moment in time

I agree. I think they were always going to be disliked to an extent by certain people mostly because of the character design. But the characters are mostly tongue in cheek, at least that's how I choose to interpret them.

Anyway, Gears 2 was fairly colourful overall. Especially the big worm level :)

I've also really hated the unreal engine. Every version of it.

I think on it's own it's an ok game, but it's one designed for co-op really. It's a fucking blast going through with a good mate and some beers, as is the multiplayer. Each to their own though!

I dunno for me Gears of War was an epic experience.

I think its on a par with Gears 2.

Plus that first cut scene on that Helicopter on my 42 inch Sammy still looks awesome.

The slower paced multiplayer isn't for everyone but for a cack handed old fart like me the slower pace suits me more. I just get murdered on twitchy FPS online shooters.

I loved Gears 1 and 2 in equal measures I think. They were both stunningly good looking games with tight visceral combat and some great setpieces. I loved the whole comedy space jock vibe too, as someone else mentioned it's the Predator vibe.

Gears 1 had some really standout moments:

1) Levels with the Kryll - having to survive by staying in the light at nighttime added a puzzle element and a nice change of pace.

2) The Berserkers - very tense and cinematic fights against these guys requiring more than just pumping them full of lead till they drop.

3) Coming face-to-gigantic-face with a Corpser. A real 'oh shit' moment.

Gears was the first truly 'next-gen' game IMO. It's sheer quality and spectacle were completely unmatched and it still stands up against most other titles today.

This.

What really makes those games stand out for me is the pacing. As far as minute to minute action and scripted events are concerned, they get everything right, especially in the second title. Everytime you're starting to think 'um this is getting a bit repetitive' the game throws something at you or ask you to tackle a situation a bit differently.
What I particularly enjoyed in Gears 2, is that everytime I thought I'd seen the final climatic boss battle or action sequence, something bigger would jump on screen.

Great games but they do have the marmite effect for some reason!?

Loved both games! I played Gears 2 through on Co-Op with my 5 year old (dont tell the CPA - I had the swearing turned off!!)
Nothing like hiding behind a barricade while your 5 year old partner goes out ripping wretches open with his lancer...a proud fatherly moment....sniff. Made up for the time where he couldn't co-ordinate with me when trying to carry the explosive to the factory door.

No, worst part of the game by far, both times. I like GoW and I do understand why they put those sections in but they're also pointlessly frustrating.

Great game (the first one, not played the 2nd), and doing much more effortlessly (and with better level design) what Brothers in Arms claimed to do.

This is not a joke.

Loved them both very much.
Gears one had the best single player and 2 the best multiplayer.

I have grown to like the Gears universe over any other.

I almost peed the first time I saw Gears. The visuals stunned me at the time, I knew when I saw that this generation would be a good one. It was the 2nd game of this generation that I'd played, after Crackdown. Crackdown has solid, dependable visuals, but Gears still looks incredible.

Might have to pick this up again now. The 2nd one is great, but the first one is still a pretty good game worth playing.

So you'd rather just pump stuff full of lead for the entire length of the game? Personally I like variety and pacing in my games and didnt find the Berserker pointless or frustrating.

It's a shame there weren't any in Gears 2. A good place to have a Berserker would have been the collapsing city, taunting it to create paths through the burning rubble.

I also thought the Berserker was a nice change. One of the reasons the first SP is better than the second.

Aside from Horde mode, Gears 2 has nothing on Gears 1.

Playing Gears 1 again on Hardcore after playing Gears 2 over the summer you can really tell that Gears 2 was easier. Both games are a blast, I feel it sits in the "big dumb fun" camp.

My 5 year old daughter likes playing BoB the Builder and Dora games.
You play Gears of War with your 5 year old.

Words fail me.

Its just, I can't believe you would allow or encourage that.

I fail to see how blowing limbs off in such a visceral manner is cartoony. GTA is more cartoony.

It's more than just the colour palette. Fallout 3 was had dull colours, but it was full of atmosphere and soul. Gears is just.. it's nothing, really, in terms of environment and atmosphere. It's not a bad game, but it's not great either, it doesn't have that .. je ne sais quoi, I guess. It's hard to quantify.

Yeah, ruined neo-classical cities, creepy oil refineries in a torrential storm, a speeding train and vast underground caverns are just so dull.

I really enjoy Gears. It's very well made, and works WITH its setting and aesthetic. It's gorgeous, and gritty at the same time.

Totally agree, far more interesting than FO3 in my opinion. First Gears also shits all over the second, especially in terms of atmosphere and art.
