Oh yeah, Touch is sexy as fuck .It was almost sexy enough for me to get one over the Archos despite the fact that the Archos kicks the shit out of it in pretty much every way, but not quite, .

If and when they get up to around 50 or so GBs then I’ll get one, but anything less really isn’t worthwhile for a video device

Already am. Have been for about 5 years.

Just for music though, would prefer to avoid going down the same road with my video files.

I tried one video file I think, it had it's file type (can't remember the name) they it needed then proceeded to transfer over.

I never bothered again, it may well have improved with the touch though, this was with a 60gb video.

Just read that Archos have announced a load of new features to the 605:

- GPS
- Flash 9 and WMV 9
- TV streaming via the TV+ device

I'm really considering one of these now. Does anyone have a 605 with the TV+ media server, any thoughts on performance/value for money?

Sounds like you'd need the wifi to be active for the TV+ service to work. In my experience keeping the wifi turned on drains the battery like no tomorrow.

You need to buy the additional battery pack to realistically use the device a portable video player as it is imho, and that's with the wifi turned off.

Does this have Divx support yet? My Zen is dying and looking for something to replace it. Guess I could just buy a modded PSP....

o_o

Yet? My Archos AV300 has DiVX support and it's over 4 years old. :D My Archos 605 also has DiVX support.

What made you believe that it didn't DiVX support?

Sometimes when I hold the lock button to use the touch screen the Archos crashs and restarts. :( Has anyone else had this problem?

Ah cool. Sorry, read a Reg Hardware review and they said it wasn't supported. Sweet, think this is definitely my next luxury purchase...

I've had a 405 since January (more pocketable than the 605 but not widescreen sadly) and its ace. The downers are that some format compatibility is pay for (ie ten euros to unlock H.624 compatibility), and it very occasionally locks up, but I couldn't do without it now. I just spent £30 on the battery dock that allows you to link it up to a TV and has USB hosting, so you can plug a portable HDD in. Ideal for our summer holidays as we'll be confined to barracks from 7.30pm when sam goes to bed.

Haven't come across a divx it wont play, but having said that I've got no mackrosa's (sp).

As much as I love my 605. It's the buggiest thing I've ever used. Random and non random crashes. Also, you have to pay for addons such as the web browser, webtv, webradio, and MPEG-2 with VOB. :( Almost 100 euro. :(

I used to have a touch screen PMP, and thats what put me off the 605 tbh. The less functionality you have, the less chances for crashes. The 405 has only ever locked up about 3 times and the hard reset has always worked. Just a shame its only 320x240 and 4:3 ratio.

Pixmania are offering the 80GB one with a dock for £213. Would probably only unlock the browser to start with. Is there a newer model on the horizon I should be wary of?

Sounds like a bargain to me. Newer models generally with archos are to be avoided- it takes them a year or so to sort out the firmware properly :)

Heh. It's actually £230, it's £213 on it's own. Just need to speak to the banker now.... :)

I actually got a 605 4gb yesterday and it is a fantastic piece of kit. The web browser is especially ace. Although as Razz said, it does seem to crash now and again. I would def recommend the mini/battery dock as over usb it takes something like 10 hours to charge wtf?

Mine was off of eBay for £80 with the web browser plugin + 4gb mem card which to me is a steal especially as I was considering an Ipod Touch.

Possibly. TBH their incremental model updates often don't offer much more, except buggy firmware for the first year or so :D

yeh.

I noticed that Opera Mobile 9.5 is out, I hope they offer an update for 605 users offering better flash video support. But this could be dependent on the hardware capabilities.

How good is web browsing on this? Might be a good alternative to an EEE pc for when I am on holiday.

Wifi eats battery, but the browser is surprising good. I'd still bring the eee with me on holiday though.

What sort of battery life would you get just watching videos?

With the 405 I get about 7 hours of video at least.

I bought a cheapo fake extra capacity battery for my 704 off ebay and it's amazing. Lasts about 12 hours or so. Well worth it.
