if you don't already know ps2+1 games run at 576p with a hdmi cable on ps3.

is this as good as having progressive scan native to the game?

for instance, sotc has a progressive option (480p) but runs at 576p without it enabled.

which is better?

576 is the DVD resolution for PAL and SECAM DVD's. A game with a native resolution of 480p 480 X 720 will look better than a game which uses 576i/p upscale.

576p is 576 X 720 or 704 pixels 50/60Hz which is the resolution for 4.3 or anamorphic 16.9. All the PS3 is doing is stretching the picture to fit the screen; so in reality it isn't enhancing the picture quality. Take that ginger lass out of Girls Aloud and film her using standard 35 mm film; now upscale the film/DVD whatever to 720p or 576p and I promise she won't look any prettier.
