price isn't really a problem, although I have heard that a larger cache is a must... so please peeps any help would be appreciated..

Although I doubt opening up the console and swapping out a part is going to be good for the waranty.

There's a drive opening on the bottom of the console (when standing vertically), much like the online addon slot on the fat PS2s, but smaller.

Yup that's what the slot is for.

Apparently there are instructions in the manual.

How easy is it to transfer all your data if you want to replace the HDD in the future?

Anything that can put onto one of the many types of compatible memory cards can be swapped to another HDD (gamesaves, photos, videos, music, etc). The only things that can't are demos and PSN games (both of which you can redownload anyway).

Not any SATA drive!

Get a 2.5 SATA drive, not a full size 3.5 one. I grabbed one from Scan.co.uk (Fujitsu, 5400rpm like the default drive was). The one I took out was a Seagate Momentus.

As for size, go as high capacity as you can afford - 100-120GB seem the best value at the moment overall.

I also bought a 2.5 SATA external enclosure and made the old drive from my PS3 into an external USB drive for backups. Works beautifully.

i got one of these for my PS3 in December and it works as expected.

It is the same make and specification as the 60GB drive which the machine comes with, but with a 120GB capacity.

also i have heard you should opt for 5,400rpm as any higher can cause overheating problems.

I got this recently:

Fujitsu 120Gb 2.5" SATA HDD

Works fine. Got a 10Gb partition with Linux on it and the rest for the PS3.

How much did an enclosure cost you? Could you recommend an enclosure?

I was on ebay and found a number of them goin for £15-ish but I don't really know if that's a good price or not.
