Picked this up yesterday for the paltry sum of 28 pounds. And, at three episodes in, its great. Lots of sex, violence and dastardly politics. Also comes in a lovelly wood boxset which is rather stylish.
Thought it deserved its own thread.

Saw it on the shelves in France, including German audio (not that I wanted to watch it in German, just an indication that there's a single PAL version). Didn't buy it, because it cost 60 EUR, and I saw no reason to carry more stuff back to the airport than I needed to.

Back home. Tried to buy it.

NOT RELEASED BEFORE APRIL 2007, FFS!

better than most shows, but a poor replacement for the HBO shows that have defined the last five-seven years of television. with the Sopranos joining Six Feet Under and Deadwood soon, and The Wire soon to join them, probably the greatest period in the history of television drama will be over, unless something drops out of the sky

It's a great series. Gets better and better as it goes on.

Series 2 out in early 2007 so I hear.

I wouldn't have mentioned Deadwood, but I was wondering as well what else is on the horizon that might be of similar quality like Sopranos or SFU (not seen the Wire yet), if anything at all.

Should it really have been a short period of greatness, instead of the beginning of better TV series in general? :/

By no means a bad series, not just up to HBO's usual standard in my opinion. Some great characters though. From what I can remember definitely better towards the end, so if you liked the start your sorted.

Deadwood got cancelled before its time didn't it? Certainly the last ever episode shown on Sky recently did not resolve anything and left lots of on going plots hanging in the air.

I can only imagine it was not getting the ratings in the US and got cancelled.

Deadwood isn't done yet.
There were three series (not sure which just finished on Sky) and now HBO is allowing the makers to do a four hour miniseries to tie everything up, it will be two two hour eps being shown sometime next year i think (most likely this time next year when the tv season starts again).

That is great news. Sky just finished showing series 3 and I have enjoyed it but it just looked like they were going to leave everything hanging in the air which left a bad taste really.

I'm curious as to how they're going to link the second season of Rome to the first. I think the plan originally was to jump from famous period to famous period in Roman history, but that will be difficult to do if they're aiming to retain cast members
