Started a new thread about this since there doesn't appear to be another one on here, hope no one minds.

I'm debating whether to bother with this game or not. On the negatron side there are a lot of random battles, and the objective apparently isn't made very clear even at the best of times. On the positive side, Tales of Symphonia is my favourite game ever.

Worth me bothering with this or not?

I couldn't take more than half an hour of ToS so... my word's probably not going to be useful. Have you got any links though?

Tales of Symphonia was brilliant. As for Phantasia, I believe its a modern remake of the first Tales of (in a similar way as Shining Force GBA ;) .) I know little else about it unfortunately, but I do know that Tales of the Abyss was released in Japan before christmas for PS2, so a more up-to-date Tales of may be released here before the year's out.

Ahh yup, I've already got Abyss, and I've got Destiny and the other PSX one to play too, I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't bother with Phantastia ;\

You may want to read Gamesarefun's detailed review of Tales of Phantasia before making your decision.

There's also a DS title Tales of the Tempest in development. Gametrailers has a brief clip.

Hehe, apologies for my over excitement, it looks extremely similar (from the small gameplay clip you could see) to Symphonia which is amazing!

Get the GBA version ecureuil.

The GBA version had a lot of additions added compared to the orginal SNES game (Even though it wasnt released in the west, the DeJap rom translation project meant I got full value out of it). The new translation is very good, there's a few new spells, three HUGE new dungeons, new summons. Basically its bigger and better.

And it was one of the best looking SNES games and this carries over to the GBA as well. And unlike the snes FF remakes on the GBA, there isn't one iota of slowdown. Its a technically perfect port.

If anyone still cares, the PSX version is ace indeed (unlike Square games ported from SNES) and the translation patch works a treat. Runs on the Tales of Destiny engine and - according to one of the chaps involved with that translation - is overall better than the SNES original.

GBA > PSX > Snes

PSX voice acting > GBA voice acting, especially if you are an anime junkie.
Besides, that translation patch for the PSX version is only a demo at this point, but the final release is going to be fabulous.

I tried the GBA version, but I still prefer the PS1 edition. The GBA game is very washed out, plus they made a balls up of the translation and the last boss.

I played using the PS1 patch, and it wasn't a demo from what I could tell. Everything was completely translated, this was over a year ago, too.

Readme says as follows:

3. Demo limits

Some small hacks have been put into place to keep the demo self-contained:

Saving and loading from memory card is disabled. This is to help prevent people
from loading advanced saved games to help make sure only the parts intended for
the demo are playable. Plus there will surely be differences in the final
release, and I wouldn't want people to miss them.

The maximum experience level is 16. This should be plenty to finish the demo
on either of the available difficulties. It takes a while to get there anyway
and a Normal mode play should be easy to complete between levels 8-10, without
ever stopping to grind. This is to help prevent people from accessing artes and
titles not intended for the demo.

Maybe you got a different version then. The version I played was full, I completed the game with it.
