Howdy chaps. I want to get some nice RGB action for my Cube, Xbox and PS2, but I'm a total newb in this area of expertise. All I know is that it'll look nice. Unless I'm mistaken on that as well...

ANYWAY! Can someone recommend the cables I'm going to need to plug into my scart switchbox please? Much obliged!

I have RGB for the Xbox, and I never really noticed anything too bad about it. Okay, it's not as clear as the Cube or PS2 RGB, but, still... is an SVideo one really that much better?

In my understanding you should avoid the RGB cable for the Xbox and just go S-Video instead.

What?! My RGB'ed xbox is MUCH clearly than my S-Video (Which is what I changed from)

So... Ahem. The official cables are good enough are they?

Always go with the official cable for the Cube. Some of the cheaper ones don't do RGB and it's difficult to tell from the packaging.

I've got a cheapo GAME RGB cable for the PS2. Works fine.

PS2: I'd recommend just about any RGB lead, even an old PS1 one will do iirc. I've seen several 3rd party ones and don't think there is much of a difference quality-wise.

GC: I've got a 3rd party one, and it's crap (don't remember the brand). I'd go for an official one.

Xbox: Don't forget that the official lead comes with an optical audio out.

I've got this cable for the PS2 and it's lovely. It's out of stock but I imagine most of the 3rd party cables do a similar job.

Got the official RGB cable for the Cube, mainly because I couldn't actually find anything else in my local GAME stores.

One the xbox I'm using component video (not composite) which gives me a seriously sweet picture.

GAME does a pretty good Xbox RGB lead with an optical audio lead thrown in for 15 quid. I've got two Xboxes, one with the official RGB lead and one with the GAME one and there's no difference in quality.

RGB on the Xbox is vastly better than using composite.

get a SCART multi-adapter from Argos so you don't have to keep switching the plugs.

Cheers ottster. I was already grabbing me one that Mugs had in our old place, a nice silver logitech one iirc. Gotta be nice on the eyes or minky'll have none of it.

My official xbox advanced SCART looks as poo as composite to me (though composite does look quite good on my TV). I have a suspicion that I'm actually watching composite in fact, and my TV might be being stupid. I'm going to have to go an block out the composite pins on the SCART plug to find out.

My ancient Panasonic TV is much happier with SVideo.

Did anyone ever try the cable mod for the NTSC SVideo cube cable to get it to work on PAL consoles?

Official RGB lead for the cube all the way - to my eyes it produces the nicest display of all three consoles.

Yes, the Xbox official RGB lead is very disappointing (though I'm not convinced yet by the S-Video argument) - I assume it's because graphic heads would be playing it in progressive scan/1080 whatever - if it wasn't disabled for us PAL troggs. On the other hand, I heard something about the graphics card being prone to that slight, muggy effect compared to the ATI delight of the Cube (though that might be fanboy rot)

and some.

Seriously, it's a beautiful display, leaving the muted Xbox for dead and surpassing the PS2. Metroid Prime, F-Zero - absolutely gorgeous.

Its very nice, a lot clearer and better defined colours than the standard composite. Specially noticable when blown up large.

The Cube RGB is excellent. Craps all over the basic composite lead you get free with the machine. And then some.

It's pricey, but worth it. £20 seem awfully expensive, but when you see the difference you'll realize it was worth every penny.

I managed to get my official Cube lead for something like a fiver when Dixons cleared their stock of Cube bits. Money very well spent! :-)

I'm wanting to upgrade my Xbox cable so I can have the optical audio lead. Thing is, I need s-video to plug into my a/v receiver, not scart. Was looking at the Joytech one. Does anyone have any experience with this, ie, is it shit or not?

I was checking as I don't want to waste my money like I did on the Xbox cable (OK the 5.1 sound is superb but the picture really isn't much better)

I think it's your TV mate. The difference between RBG and Composite is staggering for my xbox, and there's a noticible improvement from S-Video to RGB too...

I might be eaten by some of the forum members by saying this but I own three Logic 3 RGB cables (One for each console) and I have to say that I'm very impressed with the results.

The video is sharp, the colours have high definition and the AV Block that comes as standard on them is great for hooking the consoles up to my stereo system.

Also got the Madcatz RGB scart switcher. Normally I'd run for miles when I see anything Madcatz - but I was very impressed with these results.

Ninja Gaiden and PGR2/Xenosaga and DMC/Tales of Symphonia and Metroid never looked so good.

You don't have one of those tellies with more than one SCART socket on the back but only one of them supporting RGB, do you? One of my tellies does that. Really bloody annoying it is, too.

I ain't never checked on the relative merits between Xbox Svideo and Xbox RGB - as I've always been quite happy with the RGB on the Xbox - but I'd say I was with those guys on this one.
/Points at Lutz, Harry and Peekaboo
I certainly wouldn't say it was as crap as Ry is making out, here. Granted, it's not quite as good as Cube RGB. Does sound to me like his telly isn't recognising it for some reason.

You tried swapping them around? I.e. Xbox in EXT2?
Could be something wrong with the telly.

Edit: EXT1, EXT2, who cares? Like any of you take any notice of me when I have my serious head on.

Sounds like a dodgy cable to me as well.

The cable I use for my Xbox produced a noticable improvement even on the dashboard.

There's something going on if you can't notice any improvement at all.

I just thought it was down to hype.

I really noticed by loading up level two on Halo1, and focusing the view on a med pack on grass. The red and white of the med pack really stand out the green of the grass. I then swapped them over, and the difference was quite staggering. No bleeding of colours, sharper lines etc.

It's not as profound as the jump from RF to scart, but still...
