PR below...

Millions of entertainment fans will soon have the way they watch TV transformed, as Xbox 360 and Sky announce a ground-breaking partnership which will enable, for the first time ever, premium live television to be watched through a games console.

In a UK and Ireland first, Sky Player, Sky's online TV service, will come to Xbox LIVE in the autumn, allowing Xbox owners to access a range of channels and programmes to either view live or on-demand.

Details of the full channel line-up will be revealed closer to launch, but it is anticipated that Xbox LIVE users will be able to access blockbuster movies, must-see entertainment shows, thought-provoking documentaries, programming dedicated to kids, music and the arts, as well as all the excitement of Premier League football, Test Match cricket and a wide variety of other sports through Sky Sports.

The news, officially unveiled today in Central London by Sky Sports News Georgie Thompson, reveals there will be a number of viewing options.

For a new customer joining Sky through their Xbox, Sky Player will offer a wide range of live channels and on-demand content via a number of different packages. These customers will also be able to access their favourite shows on a pay-per-view basis.
Existing Sky customers who already own an Xbox will benefit from another way to view their favourite shows, in addition to their Sky set-top box and PC or Mac

There will be a range of unique interactive services available to the Xbox LIVE / Sky Player offering. For Sky Sports, for example, this will mean that live coverage will be supported by range of applications to enhance the viewing experience further. As well as fans being able to communicate with one another in real time via their broadband connections, they will also be able to check news and access fixtures, league tables and other on-demand information. Interactive applications will also be developed across other programmes genres.

PPV basis. Are you talking pounds or pennies? Will you need to buy points to watch TV shows?

Oh, and how fucking pish will the image quality be?

That's pretty cool but ultimately, if you wanted Sky you'd just get Sky anyway though.

I'd feel a bit weird if I suddenly get it just because it will now work over the 360. The only real seller would be if it's significantly cheaper than a standard Sky package.

edit - streaming all this "live" content will surely hammer Xbox Live. It gets slow sometimes as it is

Would be nice if it had picture in picture capabilities through the console, you don't get it in normal sky nor in it's EPG which is fucking shit tbh.

If you had a 24mb/s connection you could stream 1080P24 with an MPEG4 compression ratio of 50:1.

Which means with my current internet connection I should be able to stream a 1080i movie or 720p movie. which is fine by me as I only have 768 lines on my telly.

They need a decent pricing policy personally I'd say 50p per show post UK Transmission £1 per show pre UK Transmission(In sync with US/Torrents) per TV episode will multi episode deals for shows like Lost,24,Stargate:Universe

No chance they'll have live HD streaming, it'll be downloads only.

I'm betting even SD material will look worse than a dish stream.

Sports and general telly is for the most part broadcast in 50 or 60 fields or frames per second. Films/dramas/whatever are broadcast at half that (25 or 30).

You can't tell me you don't notice the difference in motion between a football match and a film?

Erm, you do know that refresh rate and fps are two entirely different things don't you?

Video, 29.97/25fps @ 60/50hz
Film, 24/25fps @60/50hz
