An obscure game, called obscure. How post-modern.

Never heard of it mate.

I've heard of it but not read much about it or seen it in any shops yet. I'd be interested to know if it's any good though, I like survival horror.

Found a slightly more informative site.

Hm. Coop mode!

Oh, I like the look of this. A bit clichéd perhaps but interesting nonetheless. Wonder if we can talk the EG guys into reviewing it for us? Or does anyone think they'll buy it?

Play has it listed (but 'not currently available') at £32.99, but nobody else seems to have it on their site.

Hmm. My pile of unfinished survival horrors is getting a bit silly now. I keep on starting them and then tailing off. I like them a lot, but do find them one of the hardest genres to go back to a game after a little break. Must be something to do with all the backtracking and remembering what is in what room. So far my unfinsheds consist of:

Project Zero 2
Silent Hill 3
Resident Evil 0
Gregory's Horrow show (If that counts)
Forbidden Siren (unopened)

Still, co-operative eh?

Project Zero is near the top of my list of Games To Finish, if I ever stop being such a chicken shit. I also never got around to finishing Code Veronica although I was very near the end I believe, it was a bit of a waste going to the bother of beating the rock-hard Tyrant on the plane only to forget about the game a few days later. (note to self: take out Dreamcast tonight). Usually though I tend to play through survival horror games in a few sittings so I don't have to worry about the backtracking.

Anyone remember Extermination for the PS2?

Project Zero is a funny one, as its got more backtracking than any other game I've played, but its slightly different every time. I guess that would make it even harder to go back to.

I really enjoyed the first one, but I'm struggling with 2. I find that with a lot of SH games. I think for me, the concepts often get a bit dull once yuo are used to them.

I'd kill for an Eternal Darkness 2 though. Played that through three times no probs.

Eternal Darkness 2 would be nice. Is there any news of one? There was nothing at E3 as far as I know.

Silent Hill never dulls for me no matter how much I play it, or how much I watch other people play it. In twenty years time, I'll be looking back at the SH games through rose tinted specs, the way I do now about Mario World.

Oooh, there's quite a bit left after the tyrant on the plane, if I remember rightly.

Oh yeah I know, I finished Claire's bit and went on to Leon's, got well into it and I think I'd almost got to the end, anda then bought a load of new stuff and gave up. I just meant that after beating Tyrant, one of the toughest bosses I've come up against in any game (maybe some people disagree, but I thought he was a nightmare) you'd have thought I'd have went on to finish the bloody game!

I see what you mean :) I totally agree - he is actually probably the toughest boss I remember fighting. Also remember playing Resi 3 on a higher difficulty setting and having to give up in one of the Nemesis fights.

(no, not THAT Nemesis)

Sounds like it could be worth a rent if some friends were over. Co-op sound quite cool.

I actually find Silent Hill the most uncomfortable survival horror series to play. Everything is so grim, macabre and disturbing in a surreal way, as opposed to being unsettling through atmosphere (as Project Zero).

Good games though.

So.... any of you survival horror freaks care to tell me if I should buy Forbidden Siren or not. I've been um-ing and ah-ing about it ever since it was released and now it's cheap on Play.... I know skal loathes it, but... :-)

I was tempted, then I read some reviews.

The words "trial and error" and "frustrating" appear too frequently for me to feel too confident about it.

Sorry, that really didn't help at all...

I was watching my mate play it for a whole evening and it looked really interesting, quite different to your usual SH.

The only thing was that there was so much going on that it really looked like the kind of game you have to completely devote yourself to, otherwise you forget what is going on. I like to flick between games a lot, and that's why I haven't opened my one yet.

I played a demo and really didn't think too much of it. I didn't give it much of a chance though, maybe it grows on you. I was also looking forward to Ghosthunter till I played a demo and almost puked.

Ghosthunter was the biggest load of old toss I ever had the misfortune of playing! \o/

I'm your man!

Pros:
really immersive
'sight-jacking' seeing through zombies eyes and plotting your way through the maps is really tense
loads of short levels gives it some pick up and play
interesting back-story ONCE you start piecing it together

Cons:
toss voice acting
trial and error - though levels are short and loading times minimal
despite playing as different characters, some fast, some with weapons, some unarmed, it's repetitive stuff
confusing hidden goals you need to achieve to progress (comes in about half-way through)

Verdict: a bit like splinter cell crosssed with silent hill, with some flying insect zombies. I loved and loathed it. Actually, I haven't finished it.

Rental, perhaps?

Still haven't heard from anyone who's played Obscured...

Ta for that urizen... think I'll wait a while longer and see if I can find a demo.

As for Obscured.... I think UncleLou will just have to buy it and tell us what it's like. ;-)

Forbidden Siren is bloody excellent, I've completed it twice. Great atmosphere, tense and a incredible sense of dread in the air all the time.

The budget must have been very low though and the graphics are quite bland at times. Also, the trial and error system and the difficulty could put you off.

As for Obscured, it sounds quite interesting. Picked up the latest version of a Spanish magazine which had an extensive review. It gave it 8 of 10, but they score all the games very high - and no, it's not the Spanish Official PS2 Rag.

The co-op sounded very interesting and it looked good and scary. If anyone's interested I could sum it up for you here. I remember they complained the game had only 6 different types of monsters for example.

I've read two reviews of Obscure (in German) now, bith giving it 8 and 8.5 scores respectively.

The lowdown of both reviews is that the puzzles are excellent (and logical), the fact that all 5 characters have different abilities makes sense gameplay-wise, and that the atmosphere and especially the soundtrack (effects and music) are brilliant.

The main problem seemse to be that it is too short, and that there isn't enough variety concerning the monsters and available weapons.

Both sources aren't the most reliable ones, but reliable enough to be sure that it's not a total pile of crap.

I almost bought it, but it's a tad too expensive a the moment (50 EUR was the cheapest I've seen, and that's too much for a PC game I am not entirely sure about).

Oh wait, is it PC only? Or is it out on any of the consoles?

And has anyone in the UK seen it anywhere in the shops yet? I might rent it, I really like the sound of it.

actually never mind about the PC only thing, on the site it says Xbox and PS2 as well :)

No, it's on the PC and the PS2 (not sure about the other consoles).

Might add that the emphasis is allegedly more on the puzzles (which often require teamwork with the allegedly good AI) rather than action (though there's a bit of action, too).

Play is the only place I've seen it, and it's still listed as 'unavailable'.
