NPD US 03/2009 - Hardware Sales (Year on year change)
Wii - 601K (-16.6%)
NDS - 563K (-19.3%)
360 - 330K (+26.0%)
PS3 - 218K (-15.2%)
PSP - 168K (-43.4%)
PS2 - 112K (-48.2%)

Everything down compared to Feb (based on weekly sales)... by a third in most cases.

NPD US 03/2009 - Software Sales
01: RE5 - 360 - 938K
02: Pokemon Platinum - NDS - 805K
03: Halo Wars - 360 - 639K
04: RE5 - PS3 - 585K
05: Wii Fit - Wii - 541K
06: MLB '09 - PS3 - 305K
07: Killzone 2 - PS3 - 296K
08: Wii Play - Wii - 281K
09: Mario Kart - Wii - 278K
10: MLB 2K9 - 360 - 205K

Good sales for the top three. Killzone 2 sells 620k over its first 5 weeks... so technically Halo Wars has outsold it already. :O

That RE5 sales difference is going to get a lot of attention I predict.

The Wii juggernaught keeps on rolling too.

Figures for GTA:CW out?

The RE5 sales difference is pretty predictable given the hardware sold to date in the US, it's a pretty good showing on both formats. Capcom know their release windows, DMC4 was similarly well timed.

All the crap about how RE 5 would have disappointing sales due to its "awful" controls looks pretty silly now.

Less than 205,000, so not great.

To put Killzone 2 sales in perspective (probably don't make a lot of sense on their own):

360 Sales
Gears 1 - 1.00m in 3 weeks to ~3.4m 360s
Bioshock - 0.49m in 10 days (0.64m over 40 days) to ~6.1m 360s.
COD4 - 1.57m in 4 weeks to ~7.8m 360s.

PS3 Sales
COD4 - 0.44m in 4 weeks to ~2.4m PS3s.
GTAIV - 1.0m in 5 days to ~4.2m PS3s.
MGS4 - 0.74m in 3 weeks to ~4.8m PS3s.
CODW@W - 0.60m in 2 weeks to ~6.1m PS3s.
Killzone 2 - 0.62m in 5 weeks to ~7.2m PS3s

RE5 may not be an ultra classic but it's anything but shite. Apart from the hypocrite racism in it.

It's good to see halo wars sell so well, it's an awesome game. Hopefully it will get some more stuff. So, out of curiosity after all the hype, what's the figure for KZ2 to date?
And wasn't some pr muppet bragging the other day that ps3 games sell close or better? How does RE5 fit into that?

The LTD figure for KZ2 is in my last post. 620k (or near as makes no difference) in the US.

Nah, its dull and shite, like all the other shooters.

Could you compare that to big sellers that don't involve shooting, out of interest?

Well, I'm rather enjoying it atm. Apart from some very shite gameplay flaws that are baked into every Japanese game by default it seems. It's like more of RE4 for whatever that's worth.

That would be tough... most of them never charted.

I hated it up till the good section, which lasted all of 40 minutes, then it goes back to the more hateful western style game it was it the beginning.

There was some complete shite about gamestop and amazon having 1m pre-orders each in the US...

...but lets be fair, it was obviously bollocks at the time.

Isn't the ps3 install base almost as big as the 360 install base these days? Both hovering around 30 million right?

Well (even though I absolutely cannot stand the Koller guy, just as the SCEA marketing drone before him) it does add up, especially worldwide. The US has the largest division between 360 and PS3.

Really? I mean, obviously sans sports, is gaming doomed to a life of shooting and the odd carnival game for a tenner?

Not really. The 360 is probably at 30+ and the PS3 at 22-24. But NPD figures are for the US only.

So sales kind of corresponds to that.

Heh, completely opposite sentiment here. The only thing I really dislike is the shite Japanese gameplay choices that the west left to die back in the 80's.

Well that and the fact that the game is sometimes really unfair (shite AI, control bugs, shitty controls, serious resource balancing issues, etc.). But then it's a non western game so you just take that on top of it I suppose.

This and SH is actually one of the few games that I'm still arsed enough about to look beyond that. Haven't picked up SH5 yet though.

I don't think I was clear enough.

In terms of scaling it never works... If there was a linear relationship between AAA games sales and console install base then last gen some of the PS2 big guns would have sold upwards of 50m. But obviously it doesn't work like that. As your userbase increases in size then the demographics and preferences of the userbase changes accordingly. (Not to mention the number of games they buy)

Yes absolutely the userbase changes, but currently as has been shown in studies the PS3 age group is higher than for the other consoles.
