Main announcement (in dutch) <A HREF="http://www.tulip.com/news/article.asp?nid=145">here</A>, one of the reactions in english <A HREF="http://peeknpoke.emuunlim.com/news_newc64news_apr04.htm">here</A>.

The only really good thing I can see coming out of this is, with luck, a one-chip C64 solution that others can use cheaply.

It's all well and good flogging collections of old games so nostalgics can complain about the game choices / emulation and younger players can completely miss the point, but I think there's only so many of these kinds of things that can be flogged.

Surely a cartridge system would be a better idea...?

    /Still mystified that there's been no Spectrum collection (and no, Amstrad's crappy <A HREF="http://www.amstrad.com/emailer_plus.html">e-mailer plus</A> doesn't count)

There's a pretty good review of both the Commodore C64 30-in-1 and the Atari Flashback TV console <a href=http://www.armchairarcade.com/aamain/content.php?article.75>here</a>.

Must say that it sounds like they've done quite a good job on the C= jobbie, even if they've cheated when counting the number of games included.

edit: it appears I've found another forum bug...!

I suspect there's actually not that much money in it, once you've licensed the games, designed and built the hardware, etc.

... wrote the theme tune, sung the theme tune... ;)

I dunno. I'm sure there'd be plenty of authors who'd appreciate some pocket money from such a widget and I suspect the hardware already exists somewhere, very cheaply.

After all, the Z80 was a cheapo chip even in its heyday. The Spectrum had sod-all hardware of its own so you're onto a winnah! \o/

Some of the custom bits and pieces within the Speccy are actually very difficult to reproduce - the ULA for one. It's a custom chip and if it blows, it's gone - you can't replace it except with an identical one from another Spectrum.

It would be cheaper to redesign the internals completely to be a 'single chip solution', but it would still cost a lot more than doing something like the EMailer Plus which just uses its own processor and emulates the Speccy instead.

Nice list of games for the C64 one...

Bull Riding (Event from World Games, Epyx, 1986), Championship Wrestling (Epyx, 1986), Cyberdyne Warrior (Hewson, 1989), Cybernoid (Cybernoid: The Fighting Machine, Hewson, 1988), Cybernoid II (Cybernoid II: The Revenge, Hewson, 1988), Eliminator (Hewson, 1988), Exolon (Hewson, 1987), Firelord (Hewson, 1986), Flying Disk (Event from California Games, Epyx, 1987), Gateway to Apshai (Epyx, 1983), Impossible Mission (Epyx, 1984), Impossible Mission 2 (Epyx, 1988), Jumpman Junior (Epyx, 1983), Paradroid (Hewson, 1985), Pitstop (Epyx, 1983), Pitstop 2 (Epyx, 1984), Ranarama (Rana Rama, Hewson, 1984), Silicon Warrior (Epyx, 1984), Speedball (Image Works, 1989), Summer Games (Epyx, 1984), Super Cycle (Epyx, 1986), Sumo (Event from World Games, Epyx, 1986), Surfing (Event from California Games, Epyx, 1987), Sword of Fargoal (Epyx, 1983), Tower Toppler (Hewson, 1987), Uridium (Hewson, 1986), Winter Games (Epyx, 1985), World Karate Champion A (World Karate Championship, Epyx, 1986), World Karate Champion B (World Karate Championship, Epyx, 1986), Zynaps (Hewson, 1987)

Some real stinkers too as well, predictably, but worth the entry price alone for all those lovely old Hewson ones

I know, Wizball missing is a chronic oversight.

Anyone know where I can get one of these from?

    Wow!

Is that a real Kempston Pro? Or some sick copy that'll poison my memory of it?

I'd say Uridium and Paradroid are by far the best titles there, Paradroid in particular being brilliant.

Hmm I wonder, my old Kempston (which was a leaf-sprung one not a microswitch jobber) lasted ages till I finally replaced it with one of those microswitched ones with the yellow square buttons. If this unit's got the old style leaf sprung thing to save costs it'll be alright (well it'll last a while)

Incidentally I got given one of those Namco Arcade all in one jobbers for chrimbo. Worst. Joystick. Ever.

And it's got Nemmy's fave game on it!

    Pfffft.

    Should've been a Cruiser (<a href=http://www.cbmhardware.de/misc/joystick/33.jpg>this</a> or <a href=http://www.cbmhardware.de/misc/joystick/23.jpg>this</a>;) joystick.

There were a <a href=http://www.cbmhardware.de/misc/joystick/joysticks.php3?Lang=E>lot of joysticks</a> to choose from...

Anyway, it seems according to <a href=http://www.redkeyreddoor.com/index.php?p=10>this article</a> that the PAL version of this joy-filled little gem is going to have some changes to the games list. No idea what, but I'm hoping it'll have some of the weaker titles replaced with classics like Wizball, Gribbly, Bounder...

/Descends into long list of favourites

    ... H.E.R.O and Park Patrol.

    Phew.

    Seriously considering getting hold of one of these (NTSC/PAL) so I can hack it like <a href=http://www.orrville.net/dtvhacking/>these fine folks</a> have. Although obviously I'd be copying them rather than discovering anything myself; unless it's new and interesting ways to blow up a piece of hardware and make myself cry. ;_;

Again, I'm really hoping for someone to join the dots and produce a Speccy-in-a-joystick. Home-built <a href=http://aticatac.altervista.org/>Spectrum clones</a> are pretty well established as possible home projects.

It'd be great to see a joystick with that famous <a href=http://cl4.org/comp/spectrum/cgc2002/stripes.gif>Spectrum rainbow</a> on the corner.

    Here's a list of some (all?) of the C64 DTV's <a href=http://jledger.proboards19.com/index.cgi?board=dtvhacking&action=display&num=1104435234>secrets</a>

There's some quite nice ones there.

Apparently the hardware is more powerful than a standard C64! \o/

Quite old, but this device is seperate in terms of licensing, or at least included in the deal
Anyway, without Halls of Montezuma and Mr Robot I'm not interested. ;p
    \o/

Montezuma's one of my old faves. I used to love all those little platforming oddities.

Hopefully they'll get to the point where the games aren't all built in and we'll be able to get 'carts' for extras.

    ...

... or just hack the hardware into old disk drive cases :D

As for muiltiplayer, one of the hacks I've seen adds another joystick port to it. The concept of having International Karate (or the sports games, I suppose) with no room for a second player is a little odd. There have been two player widgets like this in the past (mostly NES, though) so it's just a matter of waiting until they realise the potential.

If they ever see past the novelty status.

I've just been reading the EG article about this. I'm rather looking forward to it - I never had a C64 (the NES was my first console and I never owned any of the 'computers' like the C64 of Speccy) so it'll be nice to see what I missed out on. I've played one or two games via emulator though.

No Alter Ego though? That was the C64, wasn't it? Boo :(

Ahhh Alter Ego would've been a bit of a sod to port...note also that there's no Racing Destruction Set - I think both titles relied on a lot of disk usage so I guess that's why they weren't included (AFAIK Alter Ego used to save bits along the way didn't it?)

    Such a deprived childhood... ;_;

Yup it was, but to be honest I would've been surprised to have seen that on these collections because of its... oddness, really. As far as I know this widget uses a generic 'device' to load from, similar to some emulators, which means it can just ask for the files it wants regardless of whether they were on disk or tape. It searches, it finds, it loads with no hardware limits.

Saving? That's a different bag of badgers entirely.

They've got a lot right - especially the hardware, created by real enthusiasts - but the game list isn't perfect with some surprising ommissions.

Makes me very curious what changes they're going to make to the PAL version's package.

/Hugs Ngage with RDS working perfectly on it ;)

There was a shoot 'em up for the C64 and I think it was called Gryzor, or similar. It was the dogs bollocks, and can anyone remember the cartridge based footy game? Shite graphics but awesome gameplay...

Gryzor was actually the same game that NES fans know as Contra!

Will review this in full later this week - most likely wednesday. HAd a decent blast on it over the weekend and also compared it to the real thing, which I hooked up for old time's sake (with a scart lead, no less).

The major difference (for PAL users, at least) is the SPEED. Jesus christ, Winter Games is like it's on amphetamines, while some of the others you'll freak out at too. The sound emulation can be spot on, other times completely shit, but overall it's a nifty little device.

Jaysus, we don't NEED a faster Uridium. It was plenty fast enough.

Just ordered one from PLAY. 24.99 inc p&p. I'm sure they're cheaper elsewhere though (well except for on the high st)

Will try and find out about the PAL version asap. I'd highly recommend buying a C64 scart lead though - best sharpest picture ever, and gone is the dreaded pixel crawl you get on Svideo or composite. Still not pin sharp, but as good as you'd ever reasonably need.

I've got a little C64/Amiga retro shrine set up at last - away from the current gen stuff so it should be permanent. Hurrah! (also found an Amiga Scart lead online too, which *is* utterly pin sharp - highly recommended).
