/ Throws hat into ring

I have a Bravia LCD TV and use the Wii Component cable for 480p. My brother has a Panasonic CRT and uses an RGB Scart cable (480i??). Went up to his last weekend and had an extensive bash on various Wii games - including Okami, Mario Kart and Wario Ware. Personally, I think the Wii looks better on his TV than mine.

I'm not surprised. Have you turned off various image enhancers on your TV? Artificially turning up the sharpness makes games look quite bad most of the time for example.

Hmm is there any dispute that it will look better on a SD or ED tv?

Yes, mine looks far, far better on my HDTV than on my CRT.

Looks pretty jaggy on my HD telly but the colours are nicer. Depends what you like I guess.

Of course I do have a plasma which is great with SD sources.

Aye, I messed about with the settings and it looked nicer but it shares the component with my 360 and fucked if I'm swapping the settings whenever I plug the Wii in.

Why don't you connect your 360 via VGA Boab?

I think you get more tearing that way. Anyway, I'd have to buy another cable!

lol.
I thought that the quality was better than with component (I may be wrong though).

Dunno, in 1080p over component it looks excellent. Not quite as sharp as my PS3 over HDMI but from a few metres away you can't tell anyway.

I can imagine, it was just a thought as it would maybe allow you to get the Wii looking a bit better.

To be honest it's hardly ever in the house. I loan it out to mates most of the time so it's not a problem.

Info about a component to HDMI box and composite to HDMI box here, might fix problems with e.g. virtual console upscaling if your telly can't handle the signal from the Wii without having to mess around changing cables when you go back to normal games...

So is there a sure-fire way of fixing the problem with those HD tellys that don't like some Wii screen modes?

(All I can say is I'm perfectly happy with a CRT and RGB input...)

Well the products you linked to get rid of the problem but the de-interlacing quality will be horrible. My guess is the quality is even worse than in the video I linked though, I suspect they don't even try to de-interlace the source at all. A decent upscaler will do a much better job but will also cost a lot more.

The problem is that the quality may also degrade even when you feed those boxed a 480p signal. In that case you will have to switch cables again if you don't want quality degredation on games that actually work with your TV.

I can understand that you are perfectly happy with your CRT and RGB input. I'm sure this looks a lot better than most (cheap) LCD displays that are out there.

Some clever fellows in Hong Kong should capitalise on this and make a Wii video switchbox that connects to the Wii AV terminal and has output ports for connecting SCART/Composite/Component -- they could basically just have two Wii AV ports on it so you could use the official Wii cables or have connectors for ordinary ones. You'd still have to get off your fat ass and press a button on the switcher, but that would be easier than reaching around the back of the Wii to swap cables.

I don't think you'd have any problems purring a splitter before the converter box so you could use the TV remote to switch between original Wii output (SCART composite/SCART RGB/component) and the HDMI output from the box.

That should work, as long as you have a component and a hdmi input on your TV.

Three quick noob + nerdy questions:

1. Do PAL GC games output in 480p when you select that option on the Wii? I know PAL GC consoles didn't support 480p, but I'm not sure if the actual games did or not.

2. Am I right in thinking that 480i/576i would be exactly the same on both component and RGB scart?

3. Finally, I've noticed that official component cables can be found for below £20 now. I've got the GAME-branded one, which works well, but I just hate having non-official stuff on my consoles. Would there be much difference in quality between the two? Yeah, I know it would be probably be a waste of money, but still.

2. Could be worse through component because it has to be upscaled. Depends on your telly.

I have both the official component and RGB scart and if i put the scart in my scart 1. I CANT TELL THE DIFFRENCE, and yes i have changed the settings on the wii

Really? Why does it need to be upscaled?

My Toshiba telly seems to be great at upscaling though, so it might be a moot point.

I don't recall any PAL GC games outputting 480p.

I've read a few times that if the display is driven with an SD Input (SCART) it can match the input but if it's driven with a HD input (component/HDMI) there has to be upscaling to the display's native resolution.

It could be out of date advice now, technology advances (but somehow nobody has quite mastered the art of putting an SD image on a HD display, if I were cynical I'd say they want to drive everyone to update the rest of their equipment attached to their telly).
