If you visit the site you get this uncermonious message:

The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and because of this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.

    Blimey!

And another one bites the dust. Won’t be too many years before these kind of sites are a distant memory.

It's the main BT site from which most of the torrents all the other sites, like Pirate Bay and Mininova get the stuff that draws the crowds..

This is the heaviest imaginable blow to piracy.

I'm so tempted to start a hosting company in a backwater country somewhere.

    Assholes.

I wonder if they'll be back. It doesn't say they're shutting down for good.

They'll just get a Swedish host or something.

    Or one in Gambia.

    ;_;

I reckon they were probably shut down by the CIA for funding terrorism.

This was expected. Demonoid hasn't been good for a while though.

Use demonoid alot for music, good site, filters out shit/fake torrents and usually has a decent leecher to seeder ratio.

How do you mean? They're still the busiest, most trusted tracker in the world for nigh on everything.

Demonoid was alright because it made older torrents private, meaning you usually got decent speeds off not-too-obscure stuff.

Yeah, I like demonoid. My annoyance with this isn't that they've been shut down, it's the fact that they can be shut down without any sort of legal action, simply by badgering their hosting service.

    That's just bad all round.

It's an annoyance indeed. I remember reading that they'd had a couple of letters threatening as much some time ago.

Having said that, a large proportion of trackers were offsite anyway. I found the comments and such invaluable at times though.

It wouldn't have happened if they hadn't set up a mirror site specifically for Canada after they were asked to block Canadian traffic from their main site.

They blocked canada completely as I recall. Isn't that why everyone lost connectivity to them for a while?

From a personal perspective I never found anything I wanted on Demonoid. And it's demise was talked rumoured in the Oink thread.

A message on the Demonoid IRC channel says: “Site is down, tracker is up. Expect the site to return, unless we hear otherwise from Deimos.”
So outstanding torrents should still work. Getting access to new ones until the site up is obviously difficult.

I doubt it. When they took down supernova, mininova popped up within a week. For everything they take down, 10 more arise. And then they are not even scratching the surface of stuff such as DC++ & newsgroups - which are the biggest source of all pirating on the web.

Yeah this is not really surprising. I had about three different memberships there, I'd sign up for one torrent, never use it, get my account purged, then do the same again at some point. It had been unstable for a while though, I'm not at all surprised by it.

FWIW, Demonoid's wikipedia page now says that the site will be up again eventually.

Jayzus, streaming sites and torrents being tackled, that bodes a bit doesn't it? Maybe the world is starting to get its arse in gear about internet crime. ;_; This better not affect my Dexter fix.
