That's another thing Bike Park Wales has going for it, in that you don't have to rely on the shitty bikes you can normally hire, but instead get the highest end Trek stuff (if you're willing to pay the premium).

Of course, mountain biking draws on a somewhat different skillset to road biking so I'd start on the blue stuff first until you find your feet.

Unrelated, does anyone know if Cube or Canyon have sales? I know they're releasing their 2014 bikes soon and I'm wondering if their 2013 bikes will show up on their sites for cheap. I could be persuaded to knock out 1.5k on a nice little upgrade.

I wish I could be arsed to dig out and quote my prediction that Wiggins would quit the road and return to the track, because that's what he's just announced.

Good luck to him, the track is his natural habitat and he should still be able to go well.

That's odd, I'd would expect to see Coed Y Brenin appear on that timelapse, but it doesn't glow. Llandegla and Afan definitely are, as is the Forest of Dean.

Is there a link to that page?

What's the line snaking out to East Anglia at the end of that timelapse?

LB, you really are a massive geek.

I'm a premium user. Can't see it, at least not anywhere obvious.

Got it: http://www.strava.com/saturday-heatmap#0|12|3|30.50000|-40.80000

Edit - That line must be a night ride. It starts at midnight.

If the time lapse is that Strava activity monitor over the course of a day thing, as I suspect it may be without clicking on it, then the line out to East Anglia was the Dunwich Dynamo that happened to take place on that Saturday.

Indeed it is the Dunwich Dynamo. I am one of those points of data.

Quite a lot of Uk cyclists in Europe as well. :-)
What's going on in the end there. Is there a peloton of cyclists leaving London for the coast in the middle of the night?

edit: Aaah I see. How cool that's showing up as well there.

I've decided to buy the Scott Genius 30 2008 mountain bike. Don't think I could get a better bike for the money, and it's in fantastic condition.

Can't wait to take it to dalby on Saturday and give it a go. From a heavy, budget hard tail to a carbon fibre fs bike, I'm hoping to fly round!

I used my bicycle to go meet friends for drinks outside last week. It's such a bugger when you're running late on a bike and not particularly fit.
/pedal furious to go faster because you're late
/run out of steam
/pedal at sedate pace
/muscles turn to jelly
/pedal at pensionar with a walker speed
/recuperate a bit
/pedal at brisk pace
/gain confidence and pedal furiously because you're late and you feel bad for going so slow earlier
/re-start whole cycle

So annoying! :-)

Well, the two people asking the question managed to miss the link above so I thought I'd add another way to find it.

Limiting the data to only one day makes it easy to see group rides moving along their routes. The Dunwich Dynamo, an annual “through the night” ride from London to Dunwich stood out the most.

Question chaps and chapettes - anyone use a turbo trainer at home?

I'm thinking of getting one as any gains to my fitness/health made during the summer months through cycling are eroded over the winter, and I'm getting a bit tired of that happening.

Yup, that plus trainerroad.com = good training. Seriously consider one of the models they list there as recommended.

I throw a film or TV series on and just get on with it. Need to insulate my garage a bit this year though.

I use Trainer Road as well, very efficient & effective, which is what you want from turbo sessions.

I have a Kurt Kinetic Rock and Roll trainer. It's not the cheapest out there, but is very well made.

WOOOH, BIKEPARK WALES! \o/

Too tired to go through it in any great detail right now but suffice to say they've done a hell of a job. My only complaints are about the blue singletrack climb (it's just not enjoyable, do the fire road instead), the fact that they don't have bike stands outside the cafe, and that the bun the "hero burger" came with was about twice as big as it should have been.

Will talk about the trails another day, but the ones I did were excellent, especially the first blue which was so ridiculously quick / flowy that I actually feared for my life at points and had to back off. Sadly I wasn't really feeling particularly great so I didn't get as much as I could have out of the trails I did, but I'll be picking up a season pass next week so there will be plenty of opportunities. Got myself a little swag and a free bike tuneup which can't be bad. Also considering a Mercedes Vito Sport now, so I guess their little stand did its job.

Saw a number of people from the vids... Rowan was about quite a bit, and seemed to be pitching in on all sorts, even so far as filling the fridge. :) Even saw the dog. :p

Off to rest my legs. I'd give the place 9/10 and given all the grins I saw everywhere, I imagine many others would too.

Also, I hate everyone with their shiny awesome bikes and their shiny awesome skills. I will attempt to purchase both.
