    Because it's £90 (which I don't have) for something I'd never use again. I only used my last one about 5 times and that was when I didn't have kids :-)

    Yeah but then I'd have ended up on "the list" ;-)

    Meh, it's just one of those things. Last year I'd have been on it like a shot, this year things didn't really work out (like realising last minute that my passport would have taken expense and time to renew).

    If it goes well they'll do it again and I'll be on for next year :-)

    Thinking of starting to cycle to work as, one, I'm getting too bloody fat, and, two, I only live 1.8 miles from work, and it does seem a little silly firing up the v6 Honda.

    They are hoping to do the tax-free bike scheme at work, so I have had a look about and quite like the look of the Trek FX range, possibly the 7.5, anyone had any experiences with them or have any other suggestions.

    All its got to do is get a plump man, a large lunch and couple of ipads across town, then perhaps at the weekend do a few miles on woodland tracks. Cannot entertain anything with dropped handle bars as they make my neck and balls hurt.

    How much you looking to spend? The Specialized Hardrock range are really nice (I have an old one) with a *very* sturdy frame, and they're very chuckable

    Gutted for you Rhythm.
    Still I'm beginning to feel that big organised rides are not for me and better to be a weirdo maverick.

    That's plenty for a bike that'll handle short commutes and the odd day out.

    Other than recommending the Hardrock my only advice would be to stick to hardtail. If you see a bike that looks interesting just google the name, you'll usually see it's been reviewed somewhere (Bike Radar or the like)

    If it's on the list, I can recommend the Specialized Crosstrail Sport. It's a hybrid that seems to balance both road and trails quite nicely. Lock-out front forks if you do decide to go onto some proper trails, hydraulic disk brakes and is pretty light. £500.

    I know what you mean, In 30+ years of cycling I've never ridden with anyone else, it's always been a very solitary experience. Still, the experience of a supported group ride appeals, even moreso after watching films like RIDE THE DIVIDE

    Yup, Bikeradar.com is pretty reliable for reviews, they also have a bargains thread on their forum.

    Thanks, I will have a good look at bikeradar. I know the budget is overkill, but the tax scheme means I only pay about 50% of the price over 24 months, so I thought I would get something that would last a good few years.

    That there Trek would be a good choice.

    I'd avoid anything with suspension of any sort especially in that price range. It'll be heavy, require costly maintenance and most people end up not riding off road as much as they intended to.

    Heh, if it makes you feel any better, my frame alone was 5 times that...

    If you can, get all the extras at the same time - it's amazing how much all the accessories add up to. Pumps, water carrier and bottle, saddle bag, multi-tool, clothing...oh, a helmet and lights too. :)

    It's a shame that they will have to rewrite the history books.
    He still won the races.

    @Trafford

    They may as well just void all the results from that period, seems hard to imagine anyone being even vaguely in contention without taking something.

    We'll have some unknown promoted from 120th to tour winner if we continue this farce.

    People have been trying to find him guilty for over a decade and they still can't prove it. How on earth could he have escaped it this long, he is probably the most tested cyclist in history. It's strange how determined people are to find him guilty. 7 Tours is a great achievement but not like he was winning all the other Tours like Merckx.

    Who knows what will happen, or whether he's guilty? not me. But I can't imagine the USADA would hound a national sporting hero who's come through cancer and does a fair amount of charity work unless they were pretty damn sure he was guilty. And if you could be convicted of guilt by association, he'd have been done a long time ago.

    All purely circumstantial and I freely admit I'm not his number one fan, but there's an awful lot of smoke for there to be no fire. Not to mention that consistently overcoming a field who were drugged off their tits would be a pretty superhuman achievement.

    Hey guys been thinking of getting a bike for quite a while, but decided to bite the bullet and pick up a road bike... but on a budget.

    I'm going to go into my local and very good cycle shop (Cycle logic, used them before buying my dad equipment etc for presents) and see what they have, but also picked out the Raleigh Airlite (http://www.wiggle.co.uk/raleigh-airlite-100-2011/) as a fall back bike.

    This would be my first road bike, and it looks like a decent entry level road bike, and thinking of upgrading the compoments as i go along, or would you guys recommend i save up a tiny bit more and get something more substantial - in a couple of months?

    I'm looking to use it for the general, commute, and fitness, with a view to doing a some day rides as well.

    Would perfer to do it in shop, be slightly more expensive, but getting a bike from the shops give me a 10% discount on all future purchases i think, and they are superb at what they do, and any issues i have its right there on my door step. Also they might have some good clearance bikes...

    sorry for the rambling!

    @joelstinton

    Just looked at the Bikeradar review and they seemed fairly keen on it. I know a few people who've bought Raleigh bikes recently and they're happy with them.

    If you feel confident enough about what you're looking for and basic maintenance I'd urge you to buy second hand at this kind of price point you'll get much more for your money, but look out for stolen goods, there's a lot about.

    Looks a good bike to start on, after a test ride etc. first bike I'd probably say go new from a shop, all the peace of mind that comes with it and no nasty surprises. When you know what to look for you can get more second hand for your money but your knowledge, fitness and bike skills won't be a close match.

    I must have the slowest puncture in history. Took 3 days before I noticed a difference last time, tried to find it without success and now am at 48 hours since I last pumped it up and I can barely tell whether it's gone down or not. Weird.

    I also often think I should have got a road bike, but the roads round here are so bad, I would have buckled wheels in no time.
