    Jack Reacher

Better than I thought it was going to be. Reminded me of a decent 90's suspense/thriller and even had a few moments of glol comedy despite taking itself fairly seriously.

Werner Herzog nails it as the creepy guy. Looks like that guy from Spartacus has successfully cracked hollywood.

    7/10

    Side Effects

Clever, twisty plot with good performances all round. It goes a bit Murder She Wrote at the end but there really wasn't any other way to resolve an otherwise decent story.

    7/10

    Malèna (2000) 9/10

Stunning looking film, most scenes look like a painting. The story is ok, which is why I did not score 10/10. I watched the full 108 minute Blu-ray, imported from South Korea, as it seems the UK and US have the 92 minute release. There’s some moments of boobs and butt’s, but nothing too outrageous.

    Saving General Yang - 7/10

Typical Chinese historical war epic, with seven brothers charged with rescuing their father, the general, from his cutoff position after betrayal on the battlefield. Good pantomime baddie, decent action with some novel ideas, although there's some amount of 300 plagirism in show, albeit with a twist.

Scores an extra point for a very novel sniper duel in a long grass field.

    Star Trek Into Darkness

'Twas ok. About 15mins too long and the plot was paper thin, but as an action film it was pretty adrenaline fueled.

Probably would have been better had we not sat next to some stupid bint who loudly proclaimed "awwwwwww" at every soppy Kirk/Spock moment and started blubbing at the end.

    Star Trek Into Darkness

The first was the better film. This one suffered from action fatigue, meaning there was simply too much going on for too long. It would have benefited from cutting down or out completely a good few of the action sequences and concentrating on some more cerebral, character building scenes.
Basically it lacked depth and was too long and too reliant on big set pieces. But still quite enjoyable and it made me chuckle a few times.

    Piggy

London based thriller from last year. Exceptionally violent and that's about it really. Not particularly well told and IMO a wasted opportunity. Some scenes quite difficult to watch and I'm sure pretty close to real life in some cases. Personally I think they went over the top with the violence for the sake of it.

    Flight

Story about a airline pilot who has a drinking problem. Very poignant for me as my ex had the same issue, and she would never admit it. Very good acting from Denzil Washington, it's good to see actors earning their money and not shouting and blowing things up. Alcohol can really mess your life up kids.

    The Great Gatsby - 6/10

Luckily for Baz the strength of the story holds this mess together. Awful and ill-fitting direction. Perhaps it's Jay-Z's fault. And Tobey Maguire's, of course.

    Derailed - 7/10

Requires some suspension of disbelief, but a decent thriller nonetheless.

The constant use of Jay-Z tunes throughout annoyed the piss out of me. I will say this though, once they got into the meat of the story it was much better and it actually improved as it went along but it that is mostly down to the source material. Oh and Joel Edgerton was excellent throughout, most of the rest of the cast were a bit pants. I'm really not convinced that Baz Luhrman is much of a director.

You are a factory of sadness.

    Alien

For many this is their first introduction to extreme face rape porn. Most don't even realise what they are watching, as unlike most films of this specialised genre it has a very good storyline and stands alone as an excellent sci-fi horror.

Raw looking mixed with excellent CGI. The whole film felt original, given the extraterrestrial theme. I loved the part with the guy in the huge robot walker type suit, effing and blinding in a South African accent.

..great cover - Really sums up the film well.

Yeah I agree. Had no idea what to expect from it when I first watched it. Turned out to be one of my favourite films from the noughties, and I'm not even into sci-fi that much.

So, spurred on no doubt by the fact that I enjoyed Vin Diesels presence in Fast 5 and have heard stirrings of the new Riddick film I just re-watched

    The Chronicles of Riddick

I haven't seen it since initial release and being a huge Pitch Black fan I remember coming away enjoying parts of it, and a lot of the style of it but overall being very disappointed.

Well - Thandie Newton is still pants but I'd forgotten Karl Urban was in it (or more likely - didn't have a clue who he was back in 2004).

Some of it still hangs together limply and still not delighted with the whole 'Space Conan' direction it took but wasn't half as disappointed this time round.

Really enjoyed the feel of the Riddick Universe and looking forwards to the next movie.

    Also.....man.....Alexa Davalos is extremely hot.

On a completely separate note am well impressed with Google search recently.

Putting in actresses or film titles you get a whole right hand page visual dictionary section showing IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes scores, similar films etc

I thought it was pretty great. Source material speaks for itself and Lurhman's style worked really well I thought, it was the perfect film for that approach as everyone knows the story and everything else behind it, that didn't need to be explored in the film. A bog standard interpretation of it would be/is pointless really.

Depends if you like Luhrmans style really, personally I thought it worked for Romeo + Juliet and it worked here.

    Million Dollar Hotel (2000) 3/10

Switched it off after only 29 minutes. It seemed lacking, devoid of anything remotely interesting. I'll return to it later in the week maybe..

Got to admit to liking the cover. There's other covers, but this is the better cover with the title written using lights.

The Human Centipede - First Sequence 2009

Only watched this as was talking to a mate about horror films recently and he mentioned it. I'd heard a few things about it but never seen it until now.

Well, what a complete waste of an hour and a half. Sick for sake of being sick with a crap story, awful dialogue and one of the worst films I've seen in a long time. Why anyone would enjoy this tripe is beyond me.

    Fast & Furious 5

With F&F6 hitting the big screen, I thought I'd finally retrieve no 5 from the 'to watch' pile.
Other than Tokyo Drift, which I thought was a bit dull, most of them have been great popcorn-munching entertainment, but 5 absolutely nailed it.

Great 'let's put the band back together' vibe, ridiculous plot, complete disregard for dealing with complex problems with the copious use of 'I had a life before you knew me.' and as much humour as no 2, which was great fun.

And it never got so over the top that they couldn't push it just a bit more!

    Silver lining.

Omg. The best Rom com I've ever seen.

It's not actually that funny, it's more like a romantic drama with outstanding acting and a truely beautiful story.

Get this out if you want to watch a film with your girlfriend or wife as both of you will enjoy it.

Annoyingly, some of the stronger issues (in the book) did not come across quite as well in the film however, it wasn't bad ... certainly one of the better films last year though.

Go watch 500 Days of Summer if you haven't already seen it!
