@ronuds I felt it worked really well as a fun, scary sci-fi adventure, with some nice nods to the Alien films. It's only just better than Resurrection though.

    You know

Ridley SCott has dined for free on ALien and Blade Runner for too long.

    Robin Hood, Prometheus..............totally shit.

Hes too old (mid 70s) and living off past glories.
  • Deleted user 8 April 2013 16:50:58
    Prometheus was never scary.

Watching it on Blu-Ray again made me realise how scare free it was no menace at all.

The marketing department did a good job thought.

Are you forgetting about American Gangster, Body of Lies, Hannibal? I'm a fan of the underrated Matchstick Men too.

And the directors cut of Kingdom of Heaven is an outstanding film. The theatrical version is shit. They cut out almost a full HOUR, its insane.

C'mon, it's tense, and has its moments. It's nowhere near the level of the first three films though.

You need to see more films if you think those mentioned are "totally shit".

Nobody loves Ridley Scott more than himself.

After all he directed Alien in 1979 don't you know

He did direct the shit out of them, mind. The guy can polish a turd better than anyone else out there.

Kingdom of Heaven is a film dragged down by an egotistical director fresh from his first hit in nearly 10 yrs (Gladiator) and the thought that Orlando Bloom could actually act and successfully pull off being a leading man.....oh yeah and could actually play a gruff hard Knight.

Its telling the film nosedives when Liam Neeson leaves the film.

Watched at the cinema and also watched the "look at my masterpiece" extended cut.

    Its still a bad film

Nah, it was a good film. I even enjoyed the cinema release (though not as much as the DC, obviously).

I'd say better than Resurrection as well. That's not saying much, though!

I don't know how scary it was. I thought it would be and then it turned into a monster movie.

I think Alien and Predator had their time and that time is now over.

Resurrection is a masterpiece of filmmaking next to Prometheus.

    Zero Dark Thirty - 8/10

Tense, ugly and compelling. Loses a point for making Jessica Chastain's bum look big.

I won't argue about it - they're both pretty bad, imo. Prometheus looked very good, at least.

Yes, it looked very good. I liked Resurrection, it was a relatively successful marriage of the then-popular French style with your typical American sci-fi. I thought Prometheus was nonsensical and dumb. A good friend of mine, who is normally a sensible guy, loves it for some reason, so I kinda sorta accept it can be appreciated. :-)

The definitive* Ridley Scott films ratings, based on those I've seen:

    Alien (1979) - 10/10
    Blade Runner (1982) - 9/10
    Legend (1985) - 7/10
    Black Rain (1989) - 8/10
    Thelma & Louise (1991) - 8/10
    G I Jane (1997) - 1/10
    Gladiator (2000) - 10/10
    Hannibal (2001) - 2/10
    Black Hawk Down (2001) - 8/10
Kingdom Of Heaven (2005) - 4/10, rising to 5/10 for directors cut
    A Good Year (2006) - 4/10
    Robin Hood (2010) - 5/10
    Prometheus (2012) - 4/10

American Gangster and Body Of Lies have 'average' written all over them, TBF.

It's fair to say he's lost his touch over recent times, but I won't be too critical of him considering that in Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, and even (to a lesser extent) Thelma & Louise, he's given us some of the most iconic pieces in cinema history.

Prometheus hurt so much because so many of us hoped and expected that it would be a return to form. The frankly brilliant trailer only hightened expectations. I suspect that it'll be like Kingdom Of Heaven in that a director's cut will improve it, but only marginally. A pretty film; but also a pretty poor one.

*In the sense that it's my opinion and therefore infallible ;P

Masterchief alone bumps that score up to 6/10.

If all he ever did was Blade Runner then that would be enough. How many directors ever manage to create such a film? He is a directorial genius, flawed yes but nevertheless genius.

    The Jacket (2005) 8/10

Went into this expecting a horror film, but its nothing of the sort. All the same, it was pretty good, even if all the time travel stuff seemed odd (assuming there was any time travel). Both Adrien Brody and Keira Knightley, who incidentally gets her boobs out, are great. It’s original, without ever being great. The overwhelming message appears to be one of life and death, and how we should appreciate life while we have it.

..out of that list (above) all i'll see include:

    Alien (1979) - 10/10
    Blade Runner (1982) - 9/10
    Legend (1985) - 5/10

Alien will always rule. I don't remember much about Legend other than that red guy.

On that note, I just can't bring myself to like Alien. There are lots of great moments in it, but I just can't get past the acting. The "we must go on, we have to go on" line rings in my head every time I think of it and it's probably the most annoying thing I've ever heard.

I still reckon Robin Hood would've been awesome if they'd actuallt made the film they paid millions for the script for, with the Sheriff of Nottingham as the good guy, hunting down the criminal Hood, medieval CSI style.

Oh for goodness sake, I've caught my scrotum in my zip again - Margaret Thatcher, 1986

This is why I might like Aliens better. Its much more convincing as an acting job.

Not sure why there's hate for Ridley. He's a brilliant film-maker who has left his mark across the spectrum of genres.

    The Blind Side

I would not normally watch a film like this, but I remember it being rated at the time and picking up Oscars and nominations and such, plus a guy I know it obsesses with it, so thought I'd score some browny points at the weekend and sit through it with the Mrs.

It is the most bludgeoning mawkish film I have ever sat through. It is almost like watching a study in sentimentality - testing just how many buttons it can press before the audience pukes. It is patronising, manipulative, predictable, maudin and wallows in how despicably wonderful all its characters are. It is also frankly racist (both to black and white people), and assumes absolutely no level of intelligence on behalf of its audience whatsoever.

It's hard to express how much I despised this film. It represents the absolute worst of American cinema. Brainless popcorn flicks I can handle, but self-congratulating worthy preachy disingenuous crap like this really makes my blood boil.

0/10 - but even that doesn't communicate how much you shouldn't see this. It isn't just a bad film, it's an evil film. It does damage. It is harmful.
