@repairmanjack Is the Jesus theory included?

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

@repairmanjack My feelings exactly. Was interested and keeping an open mind but some of their opinions had no substance at all and by the end I'd moved from intrigued to irritated to apathetic.

I think the shout about the Minotaur was about half way through and it started to jump the shark at that point. The skier .looked.nothing.like.one.

Everybody should just calm down a little bit and have a nice cup of tea.

It's a well known fact that skier is a homonym to the aramenian word for Minotaur.

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

Wait... people are criticising Room 237 because the theories are batshit insane? They're supposed to be! It's a documentary about film obsession.

Not unless he was ultimately responsible for faking the moon landing. Kubrick admits to doing this by reversing the shot of a carpet.

Then the trailer and the critical reviews are the greatest bait and switch of all time.

I haven't seen the trailer. But that was my impression of it.

    Rise of the Guardians

Not really into these type of animated movies, I can tolerate Shrek though as it has jokes in there for adults.
I watched the movie all the way to the end, good mix of action and humour. Plus Santa is a Russian with two big swords!

    7/10

Oh, speaking of animation: The Croods is surprisingly entertaining and certainly one of the best things Dreamworks has done yet. Though I've not seen Rise yet, this one had a great comic sensibility - one of those films where every scene ends on an up so anything too American schmaltzy is forgotten. Kinda like The Simpsons back in the day.

    9/10

The subjects of Room 237 are a bit nutty. For me, seeing such a broad spectrum of theories being trotted out and applied to the same film really hammers home how subjective artistic criticism and interpretation is. Art is a mirror, and analysis is often spectacularly incorrect.

    Supposed to watch Prometheus tonight.

Fully expect to quite enjoy it as I don't really rate any but the first of the Alien films so I don't have any expectations to be shattered.

    Brap, brap, old chap.

@repairmanjack what did you expect Room 237 to be?

Coherent, at least. I expected what was advertised - and reviewed - in the national press: a semiotic analysis of some of the hidden meanings of what is still an enigmatic and mesmerising film. I expected more on the tricks and puzzles Kubrick put into it (the film grazes these briefly, but then starts screaming nonsense in your face again). I expected a discussion, at least, on the very final frame of the film (the photograph).

I've chatted about it with a couple of pals this morning, to see if perhaps I was missing the point. They're as bewildered by it as I am. It honestly feels like a spoof of the documentary the press have claimed it to be.

It's the scientology of film criticism.

I think you've read the wrong pieces.

I've not seen it, but I've been lead to believe it has almost nothing to do with The Shining and more about how crazy, obsessive analysis of any film can be.

I'm expecting to be pointing and laughing at the silly people rather than learning anything meaningful about Kubrick's intent for the film.

Edit: Example: "...raises interesting ideas about film-viewing"

@repairmanjack it's a shame you watched it expecting one thing when it was really something else. From all the crits I'd read and the publicity I'd seen I knew what to expect and enjoyed it immensely.

It's not your fault but I wonder if you would've liked it more if you had different expectations going in...

    Rambo (2008)

Taken me a long time to finallt ywatch this. Just what I expected, loads of gunfights and loads of over the top gore 7/10

    The Watch

After the bad press this got I was quite surprised by this film and found a lot of it really funny. Some critics compared it to ghostbusters which is unfair as its nothing like it. Its a bit stupid at times but the cast are briliant 7.5/10

@Architect_z Quite liked that myself too. My mind you it was a long time ago but I thought it was a nice, unpretentious actioner.

    This is 40 7/10

Romcom that avoids the cliche romcom story arc. Leslie Mann plays the kind of woman you hate and want to bang the shit out off at the same time :)

    Vampire's Kiss (7/10)

I have a weak spot for Nicholas Cage films so if you're not a fan of his you may need to avoid this one. It's a really odd film carried by Cage's performance. We laughed our ways through it but I can see some seeing it as a terrible film.

    Couple of oldies

    The Jerk

Comedically I still think this holds up really well and has far more intelligent humour than I remember it having from the last time I watched it (erm, about 18 years ago I think).

Perhaps I enjoyed it more as my Dad used to love it when I was younger, so it brings back memories, but I still found myself enjoying it, and laughing at it, on it's own merits.

    8/10

    Cobra

I like cheesy 80's action movies. Even I thought this was insepid shit.

    3/10
