He's half-Samoan I think. But seriously, Hollywood, please find a large black guy who's actually black. In fact... didn't the first GI Joe have an actual black actor playing a black character? Yes, in fact... it had two (Heavy Duty and Ripcord). I'm fairly sure having more than one character from the last film would have been cool (Duke dies within the first minutes... oops... spoilers!).
Why do you care if they're "actually black", whatever that means?
Because films tend to have a bias towards people who are mostly white in lead rolls (and The Rock just looks over tanned). There are very few exceptions (Will Smith, Morgan Freeman, etc) Hollywood deem acceptable. In this case, I don't have anything against The Rock, but there are lots of actors out there who look more like that character than he does. Because they're blacker. But they wanted The Rock, and screw the source material and pick whichever one looks a little bit like him (which would be fine if his acting merited the change, but it doesn't). That must be the case, because as I pointed out they had perfectly good actors from the last film who could have reprised their rolls.

The problem there is that when you refer to 'source material', you are actually just referencing a bunch of action figures made for kids.

Will Smith and Morgan Freeman a both a little on the latte side as well now you mention it. They're certainly not 'guy from Amistad" black.

There is definitely a white bias in Hollywood and it's a bad thing that even the black actors are generally on the lighter side of black, but I'm not convinced this is what's happening here.

Watched a few over the weekend.

Lawrence of Arabia, first half 10/10, second half 6/10.
Torn by this film, first time Ive seen it. I absolutely loved it up until the intermission, after that the film just seemed to drift and felt a bit confused about its direction and where it wanted to go, hard to say this about a four hour film but it just felt rushed.

Wild Bunch - 8/10 - Enjoyed it, talk about carnage. The final shootout was immense, can see why it must have been controversial when it came out. Its quite a nasty film in parts.

Once Upon a Time in the West - 10/10
    - Still one of my favourite films.

I only consider a person black if you can only see their teeth and eyes.

    Don Cheadle or nothing.

Ooh, they replaced the coffee coloured guy in Iron Man for Cheadle in Iron Man 2. POSITIVE ACTION.

In the dark I meant. When they're sneaking about and stuff.

    The Expendables 2 - 80%
I knew what to expect from the first film, it's a popcorn and turn your brain off movie with lots of pretty explosions.
And Stallone gets to beat up Van Damme.
Who hasn't wanted to do that...

    Wesley Snipes is pretty black.

They do say there is the brown paper bag rule in Hollywood. No darker than that. I now need to go off an compare a brown paper bag to various black actors to see if it holds.

    Snow White and the Huntsman

Stewart makes her fart-smelling face and Charlize Theron spends a lot of time being angry and yelling.

I can't remember much else, other than the dwarves were funny to look at. I mean, they couldn't get real dwarves? Swearengen should be embarrassed.

I forgot to say that some of the special effects were good. One of only a few positives, imo.

I'm really not into this whole fantasy/fairy-tale trend. So far they've all been shit, and all the upcoming ones look shit as well.

I'm surprised they're still coming. They've all underperformed commercially and critically, haven't they?

I think they all went into production at similar times, so the trend hasn't quite had time to burn out yet. I don't expect it to extend much beyond the few that are left to come out.

I think Hansel and Gretel: MONSTER KILLAZ will go down as a misunderstood classic to be honest.

They'd probably be better movies if they didn't take an established story and turn it into stupidity. But then nobody would go see "Insert Generic Name Here and the Huntsman."

    I'd watch that.
ANGLE ON BEITH standing with Gus, as Snow White approaches him.

Snow White: I feel like a fifth cart wheel here. Is there anything I can do?
Beith: I don't know. Is there anything you can do?
Snow White: I can drive that loader. I've got a Class Two rating. My latest career move.

Beith turns. A SECOND POWER LOADER sits unused in a kitchen cupboard.

TWO SHOT BEITH AND GUS skeptical. Considering.

TIGHT ON POWER SWITCH as Snow White's finger punches it on. A RISING WHINE of power.

TIGHT ON THE HYDRAULICS as the massive machine stirs to life.

FULL, as the loader starts. Snow White is strapped into the safety cage, her arms and legs inserted in the servo-sensor assemblies. She takes a step. BOOM! Two tons of hardened steel takes a step.

Snow White spins the wrist servos. The huge claws swing, open... slide smoothly into lifting brackets on a broom nearby. She raises it deftly.

Snow White: Where you want it?
