It's certainly not in the same league as Crank.

After Enemy Mine, The Wrestler simply fails to impress.

I'm looking forward to Aronofsky's film about Noah. Should be interesting.

Hs films are hard to watch but he definitely has a unique style and his films are stunning. I just need something very pink and fluffy for pudding after watching one.

I'd agree with that, right on the money. I'd also give Black Swan a 9/10.

I liked The Wrestler, but it was almost bordering on too shmaltzy. And Requiem was just too dark.

I think Black Swan and π are his best.

Requiem was a crazy film. Watched with the missus (quite recently for the 1st time)and we both just sat there in shock afterwards. I have always been tempted to read the book but must admit im terrified to.

The wrestler was a great character film. Although it has its own sort of darkness in places it never goes too far into that territory. The ending was also great imo

edit: have never seen pi, its on netflix so may give this a view soon

    Dick Tracy

Hadn't seen this in years, but really loved it at the cinema at the time. Picked up the import Blu ray recently.

Odd film. Visually it's absolutely stunning, and still quite unique - closest other film is probably Sin City. The film itself is a strange mix of kids' comic book action and quite gritty noir thriller stuff. It never quite knows what it is, and is ever so slightly weird because of it, but it's also quite sophisticated and interesting.

Performances are a bit all over the place as well. Madonna isn't great although she's damn sexy, and Beatty himself is wooden, but Pacino puts in a great stint and it really suits his "big" style. Hoffman has a nice little side role, and there's a tonne of cameos as well.

All in all it's good fun, but a bit of a missed opportunity.

    7/10

    MiB3

I've never been a huge fan of MiB; always thought they fell somewhere in the middle between terrible and great. 3 sits comfortably in that slot as well.

TLJ is tough to look at these days, though.

    72/100

    Hugo (2011) 9/10

This film looks great, more than great - magical. The DVD looks excellent, I can only begin to wonder how good the Blu-ray must look, as this is the type of film to make full use of Hi-def. Sacha Baron Cohen is good complete with side kick, a Doberman pinscher. All the cast including Ben Kingsley are great. Ray Winstone is also in the film, I could really judge his performance, as he is not in the film for long.

I have this weird compulsion that every time someone mentions aronofsky I have to say that I think he's wasting his talent on mediocre scripts.

Amazing style. Solid direction (let's pretend the "burger scene" in black Swan never happened) but the scripts are written by that guy filming a plastic bag in American beauty.

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

    Cop Land (1997): 8/10
Fantastic. Has qualities of a western, but is about corrupt cops in New Jersey. Loved the climactic "deaf" shootout.

I saw the blu-ray version in 3D and it looked fantastic. One of if not the best looking films I've ever seen. Thought that actual film was a bit slow and boring in places though.

@Goodfella yup, I'd agree with this having watched some more of it.
The main characters are absolute wankers.

My most hated film of 2012. With Kill List (by the same director) being my number 1 film of 2011.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

@Goodfella I think it was quite well received, critically. But yeah, I found it so difficult to watch because of the characters. If you're going to try and make a film where someone is an embarrassing self absorbed idiot, at least make them likeable. I spent my time wanting to poke the eyes out of everyone who appeared on screen. Even the shit dog!
