    Ginger Snaps Back

I wish Lovefilm had sent me the second one first, but never mind. Entertaining, but nowhere near as good as the first film.

    From Dusk till Dawn- 5/10

Didn't quite have the same impact as when I watched it as a kid. It was a bit shit really.

@iHAZaCHEEZ3burger Seconded, I watched it again recently as well. I adored it when I was a kid. Now, not so much... Quite shit indeed.

    Drive

I'm not quite sure what to make of this film. It's stylishly shot and kept my interest, but it ended with me wondering what the point was. The love story was unconvincing. Who would actually fall for a man who is more or less completely devoid of personality or conversation? Especially after he stomps someone to death in an elevator. I get that the whole mysterious stranger thing was a homage to old westerns and the like, but it still just feels a bit like a convenient excuse not to bother explaining the character.

Wake up and Die (Volver a morir) - 9/10

Groundhog Day meets slasher flick! The most inventive horror I've seen this year. In most years in fact.

    Two things.

    1. You've got to see this film.
    2. You've got to see the Spanish version with subtitles.
    3. It's not like The Skin I Live In. Honest ;-)

Woman wakes up after a one night stand. Man kills woman. She wakes up next to him again and tries to escape. He kills her again only in a different way. She wakes up next to him again...

Yes, it been done before in Groundhog Day, but not like this! The film although quite bloody at times isn't one of those torture porn films. She does die rather nastily but I've seen much, much worse.

What the film is about though is her attempts to escape and with each encounter she learns a little bit more about him.

I'm not going to give any more away. The film just has two characters and that's it. It's superbly acted and keeps you guessing how it's going to end. Especially after what happens when... ;-)

This is the best film I've seen at the festival so far.

    The Other Side - 9/10

A short (20 mins) horror film that's really quite superb.

I've never really bothered watching short films, although the only ones I do watch are horror ones. This one is about a babysitter that comes to a remote English farm. Then things start to get a little weird.

A short horror has one major advantage over most other feature length films. It can ramp up the tension sky high quickly and keep it there right till the very end. This film does this very, very effectively.

Considering it's just such a limited budget, the film looks and sounds as good as anything I've seen. It's very cinematic and the production values do make it look like a segment from a Hollywood film. The main evil bastard is proper scary and his mask looks like a bit (okay, a lot!) like Mike Myers from Friday 13th.

The director, make up artist and producer came on stage for a Q&A afterwards. This could get turned into a feature as it's been getting a terrific response from the festival circuit. They didn't have the budget to film the whole thing and had to cut a lot out. I'd love to see this as a full length film. It deserves to be made and do well.

    Before Dawn - 2/10

    Before Yawn more like.

Dominic Brunt is apparently on Emmerdale on the TV. I've never watched it. Ever. Not even when the plane crashed. Anyhow, he's made a zombie film.

The film is about an estranged couple who go to a remote farm to get away from it all. It's a lot of not very much happening for a very long time. Then the zombies finally decide to show up and they are more funny than scary. Probably not what the director intended. It's just a bit zombie meh! from me.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

@beastmaster have you seen Triangle? I think you might like it. Don't read up on it before you watch it though.

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

    Stir of Echoes

Kevin Bacons the shit out of this film. Sizzly performance smells nice.
Overall, very average. Kind of creepy, but don't expect a horror film.
It's one of those murder coverup made-for-TV-looking movies.
    Decent enough.

Yes I have! I enjoyed it. Totally forgot about it though.

A few more horror films today. I bailed on Grimmfest yesterday due to all sorts of boring reasons. Will get the full hit today though. First up is The Eschatrilogy and then a showing of Basket Case. Can't decide after that as they are then showing films on 2 screens. Hmm...

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

    Collateral - 8/10

I'm not a huge fan of Mann's style (tracking angled corner compositions seem to stimulate some sort of celluloid OCD in me), but he knows how to do character and personality. Might it be going too far to suggest it's even a great 'buddy' movie?

    Elmer Gantry - 10/10

Whatever you think of the subject - and both sides are given fair prominence - Burt Lancaster's performance might just be the finest you'll ever see. I could watch those monologues forever.

The last film I saw was Dredd 3D. It was quite good. However I paid 11 pounds fucking 80 for a ticket and the glasses. Then they played half an hour of adverts at the start. One of the adverts was about how cinemas are becoming empty. Yeah, cos it's dearer to go then to buy the fucking DVD. No wonder the only movies that make any money are the safe sequels. When I'm paying 11.80 I want to be pretty sure I'm going to fucking like the movie!

I saw that disappointing film too. One of those films that discards the fantasy element for gritty realism, which is kind of lost on Judge Dredd in my opinion. The only thing that made this film better than the Stallone one, was that JD didn't take his helmet off (other than that i enjoyed the humor of the old flick). Overall 5/10.

Loved it. A refreshing approach to the "kids go out into the woods" movie we so often see. Highly recommended.

    Ju-on (2002) Aka: The Grudge 7/10

Scary, not scary, scary, not scary.. Itís not that scary, but I did find it too much to watch by myself at night in the house all alone. On that level it is very scary. On a sunny Sunday afternoon the film is easier to deal with. It is good Asia horror stuff like only they can create. The actual story didnít really mean all that much.

Iíve been putting of watching this for years, and am happy to have seen it, finally.
Apparently thereís a US remake. You know me and US remakes - I donít go near them.

It's still a good paint by numbers action film, and it's scarily how good Gordon-Levitt channels Bruce Willis, some great photography too. I liked all the future tech in it. I enjoyed for that.

Very good lil sci-fi flick. Don't give expecting an action extravaganza (Or the next Matrix) and you'll be alright. Much preferred this to Johnson's Brick, which I found pretty boring.
Fantastic cast too, ole Willis has still got it, and I haven't seen Jeff Daniels in yonks.
Thankfully not as hard to follow as many reviews made out, as long as you're comfortable with Terminator and B2TF-esque time travel malarkey you'll be okay.

    Pan's labyrinth 8/10

Finally got around to watching this and I can see why it is adored; beautifully hot and uncompromisingly told. Didn't quite push my buttons though, and I had to look away from the screen a couple of times because of the brutality.

    The Raid 8/10

I watched this only to find that I only had the director's commentary with no subtitles.. Made for an unusual watch, which was enjoyable in its own right, but very different from watching the film straight up. Clearly a lot of love and talent in making this film though.

    The Notebook 5/10

Bex made me watch this. Now I don't mind romances actually, but this was a little too transparent and there were scenes involving the characters' older selves and a romanticised view of dementia tat really annoyed me.

I've turned off all the avatars and crap, so don't expect me to be impressed by yours.
