@riz23 Thanks for the info. It looks like Cuba Libre is coming out in the US in July so there might be a chance of getting it. I'll do a bit more reading. Will the smaller map - and few areas by the looks of it - mean fewer options or does the COIN system not really work like that?

I've been hearing a lot of good things about Pandemic. How good is it generally for two players?

    Because I've just bought it.

I play it with 2, and 3. It's fine as far as I'm concerned.

I lurk. If I've spoken to you, I'm either impassioned, or drunk.

90% of my boardgame time is just me and my missus and we love Pandemic.

It never feels like you're playing half a game with two of you unlike some games suitable for larger numbers do.

Pandemic is a magnificent couples game. In fact, the only person I know who didn't like it was my dad... because he sees no point in co-operating with anyone. It's not a win unless someone is sulking.

Well I just had my first game of Pandemic! A trial run ended badly when we lost on the second turn because the cards weren't shuffled properly, but we won the second game with one player card remaining! Close stuff, seems like a great game. Really like the idea of co-op board gaming.

Is the expansion any good? It seems like the main game might start to get a bit limited.

The Pandemic expansion is all but essential. It adds a huge amount of variability and replayability. The Bio Terrorist module is a bit rubbish but all of the other stuff is great. Wait until you've played the basic game and can win it on the hardest level (without cherry picking the best characters) before adding in the expansion stuff.

Picked up a few board games for the first time yesterday for something to play with my wife and kids.

    I got

    Pandemic
    King of Tokyo
    Discworld
    Elder Sign

I think that should see through the summer holidays. I thought about something more complex, like Arkham Horror or Eclipse, but I figured it'd be best to start simple.

Great choices. The only one I haven't played is Tokyo, which I've never looked at because Elder Sign is my die-chucker of choice. (People complain it's too easy, which seems bizarre for something that depends on dice rolls; I nearly always get my arse kicked. Good intro to the lore of Arkham Horror though.)

Have to say, Discworld is very new for us, and a great family game, and we've loved it so far. My daughter is now seeking out the novels, too.

It's my last day to use a 20% discount voucher at 365games... Annoyingly Legends of Andor, Railways of the World and Merchant of Venus are out of stock. Hmm...

I picked Tokyo because my nearly 9 year old daughter likes monsters and thought it was fun.

I'm a big Discworld fan, so I'm really looking forward to it.

If we get along with them, then Eclipse and Arkham will be next, or maybe Mage Knight as I've heard good things.

I was looking for a game to play solo too, mostly so I can learn the rules alone before having anyone else play.

One question, where do most people get their board games. I used amazon, but I assume there are better places.

Played three games of Wizwar last night. It is carnage.

It plays like a less silly Munchkin - all the madness is intact but the inclusion of a board and specific PvP goals makes it all coherent. Oddly the three player set up makes for a tauter game - with four players someone seems to slip through the cracks and wander unchallenged to victory.

Any game where a player can box himself in a corner with another player, plant a rosehedge, transform himself into a giant and club his victim before dragging him through the hedge has to have merit. Give it a try.

@all who offered advice - I think that I am going to skip Andean Abyss and take the plunge into the COIN system with Cuba Libre. Based purely on play time. I'll just get more opportunity to play a shorter (although still upper end of my collection) game.

A question for the Letters from Whitechapel fans - how is the game different/better than Scotland Yard? Besides the theme.

Four run throughs per game rather than one, focus is on finding the hideout as much as finding Jack, police and Jack move on totally different (although interconnected) networks, semi-random initial Jack placement and a gorgeous board with far more places to be.

My name is cubby and I'm addicted to buying board games from Germany. I just bought El Grande for 18 p&p included from a German man. If I tried to buy that in the Uk I'd be paying at the very least, if I was remotely lucky, double that. Without postage.

I may not buy anything from the UK ever again at this rate.

I think you ordered yours first - it was your prompt that made me take a look at it...

Merchant of Venus, second edition, is on its way.

I should stop watching the Box of Delights gameplay run-throughs on YouTube. I want ALL the games.

    @cubbymoore And so it begins!

Are you buying from amazon.de per chance? Are they English versions of the games?

Yeah I'm using Amazon.de, I think my orders will be in German, the Carcassonne expansion I got a few weeks ago definitely was, but I'm sticking to text free games at the moment and then reading the rules on bgg.

But who knows, I might just flip and start learning German, and affect a German gaming accent when I read out the cards.

Just played our first game of Merchants & Marauders. It's basically multi-player Sid Meier's Pirates in cardboard form. Brilliant game, with a fab theme. Can see why it topped so many best of lists when it came out.

Now debating whether it's a good time for Arkham Horror. Or maybe Robinson Crusoe... Full fat gaming this weekend.

I usually win with a medic.

Played Letters from Whitechapel 3 player. Police started genuinely arguin with each other and the atmosphere became toxic. Horrible.

Played my first game of Pandemic today and we were convinced we were doing really well. We had 2 diseases eradicated and one cured and were wondering what all the fuss was about the difficulty when we ran out of player cards and realised that meant the end of the game :(

Really enjoyed it though! Can't wait to give it another shot.

Sympathies. Never fun when that happens. Did you finish the game?
