People who don't like playing BSG will be the first out of the airlock when I'm the Admiral! Bloody Cylons!

    @shamblemonkee

Dust Tactics is Weird War 2 rather than futuristic, but may give you some inspiration.

Claustrophobia is similar to Space Hulk but is fantasy themed.

Bit of an odd question here but, out of curiosity, how did those of you who play in groups of friends broach the subject of board gaming for the first time?
floated the idea on twitter; a few friends expressed interest. set up a private facebook group and took it from there using doodle polls each month to gauge availability for a monthly night. this has branched out to playing at least almost once a week...

Let us know how you get on with it.

Did you ever play the first edition? The one game we played took an absolute age but was great fun. Would love to play again but would rarely be able to find the time for something so epic. A cut down version would be ideal.

Yeah, that's why I never bothered with 1st but this is supposed to be streamlined and you can play a session within two hours easily, apparently.

I'm backing Race to Adventure! on Kickstarter. I was looking for something different but not too complex to play with my son and it got me interested.

Anyone ever used www.dicebay.co.uk before? I've got my list of your popular sites (which I'm using) but these guys were the only ones to have a copy of 1960: making of a president when I ordered it a week ago.

Just got an email saying it's out of print and unavailable, but they have a used-once pristine copy I can have for 25.

    Hmmm.

Mate, I have used dicebay many times. They are local to me. I kind of know the guy through being local. He is 100% trustworthy, a mad gamer himself and you can buy from him with confidence.

Yeah, just had a message from him. Looks like it's going ahead, if I can live with a slightly damaged box.

    Appreciate the reccomendation.

I had the same problem with a different game recently so they obviously don't update the stock on their website correctly. I got an apologetic email and refund almost immediately though so i would probably use them again.

Descent 2nd is very, very good. Plays really slickly and has pretty intuitive rules, especially for a FFG game.

Highly recommended if you're up for a dungeon crawler.

Managed to pick up 3rd Edition Space Hulk sealed......100. I'm rather happy with that, seeing what it's going for online.

Had a quick rummage through, it looks great and I'm really looking forward to testing it out over the weekend.

Watched the Tabletop edition of Munchkin last night. Looks alright. Any idea how it plays with two?

Also, the missus has started having odd dreams about zombies... and is now interested in playing a boardgame with that theme.

    Win!

Just completed Elder Sign on the iPad on the hardest difficulty. It is a very nice port and plays very well. Cutscenes are gorgeous and it makes a great simple diversion.

However the mechanics are overly random and sometimes losing does feel a bit cheap.

I've played Elder Sign on the iphone and really liked it. Just prefer the cardboard edition for the "feel" of it. I think it changes things very slightly, but it's a solid version of the game.

    @repairmanjack

I was interested in Munchkin after watching Tabletop as well. Asked my regular group about it and they all reckoned it's not a great game. Then again, they hate BSG, so what to they know? It does tend to get a lot of stick on BGG though...

Also, minimum of three players I think.

Munchkin is great. But be warned it suffers from monopoly syndrome where you know who is going to win way before the end but you may have to play it out for ages.

We did 2 player Munchkin and felt it would work much better in a larger group. The mechanics are nicely streamlined, but it does need more people to be honest.

I'd still nab it, it's good to have as backup should the need arise. I've not had a look at Magic 2013, but that might be an option to consider.

Can anyone think of a good reason why I shouldn't buy Space Alert when I get paid on Friday?

There's a copy in Orc's Nest in Covent Garden (or at least there was one there this afternoon). Hopefully it'll still be there by Friday.

Oh and that RPS post is the main reason I want it :D

has anyone played kingdom builder (the 2012 spiel des jahres)?

one of my friends picked it up and I played a few games which pretty much went:
game 1 - I don't get this. seems mundane with a lack of choice
game 2 - I really don't get this at all, and I'm getting gubbed
overnight interlude during which I looked up some basic strategy on bgg
game 3 - ahhhh this is actually quite simple but there is definite strat and it's fun, elegant and I want to play again

would definitely recommend reading a little about it before playing

Played my first game of 1960: The Making of the President yesterday. Brilliant stuff. Of everything we've picked up it turns out this is the one my girlfriend is most intriqued to play.

Popping past the local gamestore tomorrow. May have time to "window shop".

Quite tempted to have a closer look at Friday by Friedmann Friese (simply because Power Grid is so elegantly designed). May also rattle the box of Zombies... although several people have suggested it gets old really fast. Any fans of it here? As an alternative, is Last Night on Earth decent as a two-player?

Last Night On Earth actually works really well in two-player - one player as zombies and one as survivors. It's better than Zombies.
