No, not the ones converted to PC or console - the real thing.

As you all seem like nice types (when you're not decrying PS2 exclusives or EA or Joe Public...) I thought I'd ask if anyone around here is 'into' boardgames. I've gotten back 'into' them myself recently, got the bug really, and I'm looking for potential opponents.

Started out easily enough with Risk. Bought myself Carcassonne, then followed it with Settlers of Catan and just yesterday picked up The Lord of the Rings (the Reiner Knizia version) which is looking promising.

Anyway, if there's any other boardgamers out there I'd be happy to hear from you... oh and if you're wondering if there's a big market for this sort of thing, go let your mind boggle over here.

I used to be a huge Risk fan, not touched that or any other board game for years though. Pretty much since I got my first console...

Have you played Kingmaker? I was amazed to find out it was made in 1974, I used to love playing that - and it was 'educational'. Mind you, I used to claim Ghost Castle was educational...Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs was the best IMHO

I think Settlers of Catan is excellent, I can play it over and over again. I've only met a few people who have played it and don't like it. I think the Cities and Knights expansion is worth a go, adds quite a lot more complexity to what is essentially a simple game, but does allow for more varied strategies. Interesting for a change to normal Settlers.

On slightly similar lines I think Peurto Rico is also well worth playing.

I've never played Carcasonne but have heard its good.

Have you tried Perudo? Not strictly speaking a board game as it only involves dice and cups but is excellent for bluffing, counter-bluffing and difficult decisions.

If you're looking for opponents on-line, try Richard's PBeM Server. It's only really got fairly traditional games that can be displayed easily in text-only (Chess, Draughts, Hex, Connect 4, Go, Wari, Scrabble, plus a few card games) but it's got loads of variations of each of them.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

    Love board games, me!

I've got a shitload myself, and even contributed stuff (like photos etc) to the site you linked to.

A lot of my stuff is linked to videogames - board game versions of Defender, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man etc etc.

I just love the tactile feel of a board and pieces, and the fun you have sitting round with a bunch of mates. Great stuff ;)

My favourite was probably Talisman, the early Games workshop game where you razz around a board getting more and more power-ups ("power-ups"? jeez, too many VGs ;) until you can take on the mighty dragon at the end. Was good fun.

Then there's always that game of Blood Royale waiting to happen...

edit: Oh, and Nuclear War was good fun but that was more of card game

Thinking of videogame-related boardgames, has anyone had a chance to try the Warcraft boardgame from Fantasy Flight Games? Any good?

    I was gonna say Heroquest.

The game i'm currently pimping is LaserSquad Nemesis.
    It's very similar to Heroquest.

    What?

    /casts Resurrection on thread!

Got a stack of new boardgames for Xmas BTW. As a big fan of any dungeon crawlers I recommend:

    Tomb

and slightly silly, but with pretty solid gameplay mechanics:

    Munchkin Quest

Talisman was mentioned earlier in the thread. It was re-released about 14 months ago so is available again now.

    Awesome game.

Risk is indeed the daddy of all board games. Used to have Risk evenings with my mates once a month. Need to get those going again really.

I was bought "Monogamy" for xmas... I'm yet to try it so I can't say if it's any good or not. It's supposedly not bad though.

Sequence is the only board game we play regularly. Cracking game - basically Connect 5 with cards (with a few extra wild cards). Can't buy it over here though, had to get it imoported online.

I looked at Perudo, but it looked mightily complicated. Maybe i'll try it again.

Games of the moment for me are: Ticket to Ride and Last Night on Earth.
