This will be a sweet feature.

PlayTV’s two TV tuners are High Definition ready and are able to view, record and play back High Definition signals in full HD1080P to fully complement PS3’s already impressive High Definition credentials.

    · Unlike the electronic programme guides found on conventional satellite and cable services, PlayTV’s EPG is lightning fast, and simple to use with either PS3’s SIXAXIS™ wireless controller or the BD remote control to really enhance viewing pleasure.

    · Intuitive controls, single button help features, tutorial videos and simple navigation make PlayTV a positive joy to use compared with the complexity of some standalone PVR models

    · Seamless connectivity with PSP allows you to set recordings, watch Live TV and recorded TV programmes remotely on PSP via a Wi-Fi connection (using Remote Play feature). Alternatively, quickly transcode recorded TV shows for high quality viewing to PSP by USB cable for remote viewing away from the home.

    · Optional on-screen graphical display provides a wealth of information about the status of PlayTV and provides quick access to programme information, stored TV programmes and the controls to pause or record live TV. PlayTV will also set the correct interface for either Standard Definition or High Definition displays, maximising the viewing experience.

    · PlayTV will evolve with time, with great added value functionality being updated via PLAYSTATION®Network; a feature that sets it above all other set top boxes. PlayTV will never be out of date.

Expect PlayTV to show up in the UK and Europe around January’08.

The interface does look very slick and fast compared to Sky/Freeview.

But really... it's not very exciting, is it?

How much? And where will you store all the programmes? On the 40/60GB hard drive? It'll fill up pretty quick.

Not a bad idea though, but it's more of an addition if you've got one already rather than a reason to buy which is what the PS3 needs badly.

/waits for Sony to 'listen to consumers' and put out PS3s with larger drives early next year.

It's good news for PS3 owners, especially if they have a PSP as well. Can't see a reason to moan about this.

Well, for me, its the fact that this will be another reasonably expensive add on for the PS3, by the time its out the price of 'traditional' HD services will have plummeted and will outperform it (especially in hard drive size).

I dunno....I guess I just find it hard to believe Sony will be able to make this an attractive proposition.

I was quite excited by the Portable TV features for the PSP until I saw how unbelievably expensive the content was.

Aside from the PSP linkage, I cant see why you would choose this over, say Sky HD or Virgin. Seems like a push in the wrong direction.

How about because it's just a PVR and won't cost you £40 a month to use?

Neither can i tbh, sounds like a great feature. Suppose there is no pleasing some eh? :/

I agree with Machiavel though, Sony will use this as an excuse to bring out another SKU with a bigger hard drive

    Hated, adored, never ignored.

Well, I thought I had. It says 'digital signals' which, yes, will probably mean freeview. But that means no sport or movies. Plus HD freeview boxes will come pretty much as standard with large hard drives.

Again, I cant really see the point of the extra integration, especially since, in this country anyway, HD freeview will almost certainly be 1080i.

Or the Official USB external storage drive.

Depending on the price point (which is key really) it's a very nice bit of extra functionality for anyone who doesn't have a freeview/dvr box. I'm also willing to bet that that one of these + the extra external HDD will be less than an HD freeview dvr. Add in the PSP functionality and it's a smart package imo.

Yes, it's no alternative to Sky HD, but it's really not supposed to be. It's an alternative to a freeview DVR, and a very good one imo.

Not yet. There are sucessful trials going on but I think its going to be 2012 until the bandwidth is freed up, so it wil be a while after that.

Well, thats the crux isnt it. if it weighs in at the price of a reasonable freeview box, then, yeah, jackanory.

Admittedly, it is the hoary old cynic in me, but after numerous dealings with Sony hardware, plus the disappointment of PortableTV, I just cant see this as being anything but a vaguely niche product.

I hope im wrong, to be honest. Im picking up a PS3 next year and for 40 odd quid, it would do well in the office. Anymore than that and you are veering into dedicated PVR territory.

My Freeview PVR is one of the best purchases I've ever made, I couldn't live without it.
If we ever get a decent quantity of HD freeview channels in the UK I will pick this up.

Jeez, guess who got out of the wrong side of the bed today then. I can't see why you are whining about this. If you don't like the features don't buy the peripheral. Its not as if its being forced down your throat or anything.

Its got some nice features that a lot of people will find useful.

I know. Although people seem to progressively forget, this is a 'discussion forum' where people have 'discussions'.

I pointed out the things I thought were bad and people like Kal pointed out the things they thought were good. Laughs were had, beers were shared.

    Universalpraiseforeverythinggamer.net would be pretty lame.
