I've had people asking me to consider doing a stand up night at a pub in Salford now i'm studying up there.
I'm good at making people laugh in a social setting where there's a group and I can comment on the conversation. I'm pretty quick in that kind of setting, but actually preparing material is proving rather difficult. I've got the confidence and the arrogance, but alas- can't think of anything to joke about.

Have any of you lot done stand up or considered doing it before?

Tbh., people have said it to me too. (yes, yes, I know). But it's very easy to take this piss and be funny when people are constantly giving you stuff to work with. Actually writing punchlines and working out timing etc., is skill that must be learned. And is hard.

Surely it can't be taught though?

    Watch Eddie Murphy's 'Delirious'.

That'll inspire you (and make you piss yourself from laughing so hard).

Best stand-up EVAH (and yes, I know that Richard Pryor and Jerry Seinfeld are great!)

Hmm, I guess we don't share the same taste in stand-up. ;p

There are so many different styles of stand-up though, aren't there? You've got to find your style I suppose. Two of my personal favourite stand-ups are Billy Connolly and Bill Hicks, both very different and pretty distinctive. Far better imo than Seinfeld or Eddie Murphy but ymmv.

I'd like to do a panel show of some sort. Salford University are connected with Channel M (Manchester). i think i'd be pretty good in the right situation.

Heh, Connolly and Hicks are great too - Delirious is just fresh in my mind after watching it last night.

I have ridiculously wide ranging tastes.

Woody Allen, Steven Wright, Bill Hicks, Eddie Murphy, Richard Prior, Chris Rock, Bill Bailey, Eddie Izzard, Dylan Moran .. hell, even some of Roy Chubby Brown's stuff has some merit occasionally in my eyes.

Oh Woody Allen. How'd I forget to mention him?!

I'd love to see a bit more of Steve Martin's stuff too - the few clips that I have seen were hilarious.

Most good stand up comedians turned to comedy as a kind of defence mechanism, and they usually start quite early. It's almost a vocational thing, something you feel you need to do. I don't think you can just suddenly take it up, although I suppose some have done it that way.

I've certainly laughed hard at some of Chubby's stuff, I confess.

Another shocking confession: much as I admire Eddie Izzard, I don't actually, well, find him that funny. :(

I think a good idea to start would be to nick some classic material off other comedians to start off with, then as your confidence grows you can make up your own.

I once did stand up and won a talent show with the top prize of a week's holiday, with one or two short risqué songs in the mix too. Having seen a few stand ups comedians, good and bad, I'd say it's important if it's not going well to hide your nerves and don't dig a bigger hole. A few sharp comebacks for hecklers wouldn't go amiss, as putting down the loudmouth is a good way to win over the rest of the audience. Save the really edgy jokes for when you've won the crowd over too; there's nothing worse than that off-colour racist/sexist/blue/Madeline joke when you don't have any rapport with the audience.

I was about 12 at the time I won the contest and the holiday was for my family in Tenby, but don't let that stop you listening to my advice.

When I first experienced Eddie in a live capacity I laughed so hard I literally couldn't breathe. Fucking HILARIOUS. That was Unrepeatable. In subsequent years I found his act experienced diminishing returns for my humour gland. I love him but it's the same old stuff now, which is probably why it's just as well he seems to be bringing his live acts to a peaceful retirement now to concentrate on a not-altogether-convincing but harmless acting career...
