Yeah, I thought the rest might not matter, but I didn't want to make a large mistake.
    Cheers for confirming.

I'm using a Samsung R540 atm, and I like everything about this one, but I think it was expensive.

Put the 300 into a game of poker, then use the winnings to buy a better laptop.

Any old crap you find can run the internet. Just make sure it has a keyboard and you'll be fine.

Ok so i got my DSA payment to buy a laptop for college, basically my budget is max 800 looking for a decent laptop ideally 15.6 screen and can sneakily play games ( of course its all for college work). Doesnt need to be mind blowing but something that will last a while would be nice. had a look at laptops direct but that price range seems 4gb RAM tops, when i was kinda thinking 8 for a bit of future proofing.

    EDIT: considering this one laptop

cant really comment on specific laptops, but when i bought my Vaio last year, it was a piece of piss to open the little hatch and put in an extra 4GB stick of RAM that i got from Amazon for 17.

I will always recommend desktop over laptop based on cost and performance but if you must have a laptop instead.

Can anyone help. I'm wanting a new laptop and i'm eyeing up this one.

It's about as much as I can afford at the minute, but i'm really just looking for something that can handle video editing smoothly and the adobe suite. I spend a lot of time with photoshop, dreamweaver and flash/actionscript.

Shamefully, I can remember little from my old computer architecture lessons at uni, especially when it comes to processors. Can't believe I used to be able to understand low-level programming at one point. I assume the AMD A8 quad-core is good, but i've no idea how they compare to Intel's i3 or i5. Seems like everyone thinks differently about it.

Anyways, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

The comparisons are highly workload dependant which leads to the different recommendations from different people.

If you are playing any games at all I'd go with the A8 otherwise with an i5 (assuming no discrete graphics are included). OpenCL is finally being included in a useful manner in a few programs (including done of Adobe's suite) which gives the weaker A8 CPU a nice boost in tasks that can be offloaded to the GPU part. Again though, it is workload dependant so the i5 is better over a wider range of programs.

Thanks for that! I do intend to play games on it too, though it'll most likely be emulators of old games with Fraps running alongside it, rather than anything modern. Perhaps I should sniff out something with i5.

Can anyone recommend a laptop that's around the 13 to 14 inch range and as light as possible for around the 500 mark? It's going to be used purely for work so writing and watching videos are all it'll need to do (it's for my little sister who works in theatre production). My first though was an ultrabook but those things seem to start at about 800 which is way over budget.

edit: A good battery life would be a huge bonus as well.

Giving serious thought to purchasing a laptop for the express purpose of gaming. I just want something that can run the likes of Bioshock and Xcom at decent Framerates on something like medium settings (maybe more if it's possible).

Anyone got a recommendation in the 14 - 15 inch range.

I've seen a few but they seem to be around 900 - 1000 mark and figure there must be something cheaper.

Two I've seen are the Lenovo ideapad Y500 and an Asus N56 series one with a Geforce 650M (I was trying to link but forum seems to be spazzing out on me).

Both seem fine specs wise and I'd imagine I'll get semi decent performance out of either but Ideally I'd like to spend less as this is not a replacement for my desktop but a portable, make do, solution so I'm not looking for miracles.

I've heard a bit about the newer AMD CPU/GPU combos but not sure f they will fit my needs?

Been really impressed with my HP Envy M6 which I got recently. Super fast, fingerprint sign-in and Windows 8. I tend to use for photography (photoshop), video editing etc. Also has big HDD (1000GB) and more space than you'll ever need.

You want at least an Nvidia GT 650M for mobile gaming.

The Enigma IV looks good for 800.

15" - choice of Glossy or Matte, along with 1366x768 or 1920x1080
    Quad core i7-3630m
    Nvidia GT 650M 2GB
    8GB Memory (2x4GB)
    120GB SSD + 1TB HDD
    Some DVD Writer.
    Windows 7

    793 delivered.

FYI, I use the 11.6" "Inferno" with the same specs and get fantastic gaming performance.

Looks a good site, presume you went with 1366*768 display for the 11" one you got?

Do you mostly game using the laptop screen or hook it up to a TV or whatever?

yeah 650m gt is great at 768p. 11" laptop with an ssd is essentially gameboy * christmas * 2.

Yeah I went with 1366x768 (which is the only choice for 11" anyway).

You'd need to spend way more on a laptop to get a decent framerate at 1920x1080p. 670MX (not the standard M version) isn't cheap.

I do a combination of gaming on the laptop itself, and sometimes hooked up to a keyboard, mouse and monitor. Luckily I have a native 19" 1366x768 monitor for such a thing.

I've also overlocked both the CPU and GPU to gain quite a bit of performance.

My current laptop looks to be dying, so could do with some recommendations.

It is used for Lightroom/photoshop quite heavily as my wife is into photography, and also needs to run SAge / MS office as it's used for work purposes as well.

Beyond that, it would just be Internet and stuff.

Any recommendations? Budget can be flexible, but build quality is more important than spec, as the last couple of machines have died after 3 years or so

No positive advice I'm afraid but I will say steer clear of that PCspecialist place imo. I got the "Ultranote" from there and thought the build quality was really lacking. The touchpad was rubbish, often your clicks wouldn't register, and the keyboard felt really flimsy. In the end I sent it back.

This looks ok. Full HD and a nice amount of RAM.

My new laptop arrived today. Nothing too exciting, core i7, 8gb ram, 2gb AMD 8730. Thought it was ok for the 410 I paid for it.
