I've never understood why people like it so much tbh. It's not bad, but I don't see what makes it better than any other media player out there.

Basically, if it won't play on VLC, it won't play on anything. That's why.

I'm using SMPlayer now, which kicks VLC all over the place.

Well that's the thing though. I have files that'll play in some media players but won't play in VLC.

Yeah, that does happen, but by and large when a file doesn't work VLC is my first port of call. Pound for pound it seems to cover the most file types, although it's far from the best player.

VLC is the whole package, the UI isn't HIDEOUS like most media players (i'm looking at you SMplayer + winamp) it does everything and it does it well.

    ridiculously stable, and its QUICK

VLC was causing trouble for me prior to my Windows refresh but now it's full of awesome again. Plays everything flawlessly including 1080p files :)

    Wooo!

I much prefer using Media Player Classic with the CCCP codec pack. Only ever had one file that wouldn't play with that, and VLC wouldn't play it either.

Thatís my combo as well, but I do have the odd file only work with VLC still. Usually flv files.

I still use GOM player with CCCP. VLC/MPC for backup for stuff that doesn't work. Which is hardly ever.

I've never really needed VLC with this computer. I installed the Vista Codec Package, and then just played everything fine with WMP.

If youíve never needed VLC, youíre simply not watching enough niche porn.

Even though WMC is better it doesn't have a little Christmas hat on top of the logo. So lots of bonus points for VLC.

Yep- can't go 10 mins (5 in some cases) without it locking up. Known issue since october apparently (it worked fine on the previous release). I hope they fix it pronto.

I've been using Cinexplayer on the iPad instead. It's a paid for app but works much better than VLC at the moment. It still stutters every now and then but much more stable than VLC.

I found a trick. When it crashes, hit pause, then hit fast forward 3 times and then hit done and it will return to the file viewer. You can now click the video you were watching and it should resume from where you were.

Alternatively if you are jail broken you can download the previous version and manually import it into iTunes and then sync it across to the iPad.

Is there a way to view a movie I'm streaming in the VLC player window? It'd be nice to be able to move it around and set it to stay always on top and stuff.

I don't get it. Why is VLC the only player that seems to "play everything"?

If VLC has been able to do this for so many years, why are there no other players which have the same codec capability?

I'd been happy enough with Media Player 12 (or whatever it's called) until recently - every time I try to rip a CD to my system I get a 'Not Responding' message, and end up having to close it down.

Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

What are the alternatives? Can I rip my John Cooper Clarke albums with a different program, and if so, is it possible to get rid of Media Player completely?

VLC is real good. I like using its download function to rip-off music from YouTube. :)
