    ...does anyone know what the first ever blastbeat was on? I seem to remember hearing one on either Left-Hand Path or Clandestine by Entombed. That would make it about 89-90... any earlier than that?

    Bah! Call yourself a metal warrior?! :)

    In musical terms, it's a beat played at twice the speed of the song, i.e. fitting twice as many beats to the bar as the bar suggests.

    In metal terms, anything from Nile to Emperor to Lock-Up use frequent blastbeats to create huge bursts of speed.

    In nu-metal terms, listen to People=Shit by Slipknot (from the album Iowa); those really, really fast beats are called a blastbeat.

    In real terms, it's the drummer showing off at how utterly improbably fast he can play.
