Medieval's Kingdoms expansion pack focused on a few different campaigns in closer detail but didn't lose the strategy element, they just had a greater number of individual 'regions' within the area your campaign was centered.

Did they do this with the rome games? I have them on steam but not played them more than a few minutes, for sake of comparison.

Don't think so... I can only vaguely remember the Mongol one and I think that's the same map as vanilla Rome.

What Rome: Alexander all about then?

Rome had Barbarian Invasion - which was the same map with a different set factions (Huns not Mongols!) and the Alexander campaign which was quite linear, so possibly similar to these new Napoleon campaigns. I'd imagine it'll also be similar to the Americas campaign in Vanilla Empire.

    New expansion announced.

    "5 New Playable Factions
Play through the new Warpath Campaign or in multiplayer as one of 5 new American Indian factions in Empire: Total War, including the Iroquois, Huron, Plains, Pueblo and Cherokee nations.

    Expanded North American Territories
A new, more detailed North American Campaign Map featuring new regions and a new start date.

    New Elite Units
Command new Elite units specific to each American Indian faction including Mohawk Elite Warriors, Cheyenne Dog Soldiers, Navajo Scout Warriors and many more.

    Shaman and Scout Agents
Two new agent types - Infiltrate enemy territory with the new Shaman unit and sabotage the opposition with the cunning Scout.

    New Tribal Technologies
18 new tribal technologies including Spirit Medicine, the Call of the Wild and Dreamwalking creating a brand new tribal technology tree.

    New Objectives
New winning objectives for each of the playable factions."

Meh, hard to get excited about this when they've already announced Napoleon Total War for next February. Doesn't help that playing as Native Americans was hardly at the top of my priority list.

Odd, this latest expansion direction. It's got that massive 'meh' factor to it, just like AOEIII Warchiefs did.

Probably give it a miss. I've barely played with the European factions and I got through a very similar campaign in the medieval 2 expansion. New patch is out though, something about AI invasions?

So in the first (kind of) Total War about gunpowder and cannon, the expansion is about Cowboys and Indians?

    Smart.

Not so excited about the Cowboys and Indians TW.Napoleon sounds excellent though.First I've heard of it.
Wonder if they'll do an African expansion eventually?

edit*So the Napoleonic is stand alone then?

It isn't cowboys and Indians. You're not going into the wild west. Think Last of the Mohicans. Europe's wars taking place in America. A lot of native tribes were recruited then.

They have to do India next to realign THEIR unique technology tree.

Africa. Interesting things happen in the 19th century for them, not 18th. The game will need to be expanded upon a lot to cover the scope of African expansion and events, imo.

I think I've really stretched myself as Prussia. Only two main armies and that is only with the first building military techs.

Taken out some of the smaller provinces and even taken West Prussia, Silicia and Prague. Poland-Lithunia is hitting back and while I made peace with Austria with 3000 gold per turn pay offs, they seem likely to strike from the south to regain what I took.

I tried playing Maratha, just to eventually use Sikh troops, but they seem so boring at the start.

patch seems to have fixed a few of my issues notably sound no longer stutters on the intro video.

Also noticed the firing range/arcs are now a bit more visible than before.

Crikey, a lot of province conquering then gifting tactics. Austria decided to reclaim Prague but first had to deal with Poland-Lithuania. Pushed Poland back, managed to peace with a 3000 a turn pay off. Lithuania is in the hands of the Swedes, Poland is in mine. Destroyed Austria, sold Croatia to United Provinces and their other southern holdings to Ottomans.

Finally war left with West Phalia, who are small fish. Alliances with Hannover and UP, working on Britain and Sweden. Will have to hold back my conquering now, reorganise, build up some capital as the last two turns was risk of bankruptcy.

Game seems to play a lot more smoothly for me, now. Visually got more performance by just going down to bilinear filtering, leaving rest on high and ultra. Depth of field was turned off too, cause it was horrible on the campaign map.

Stretched too far, too aggressive, got demolished.

But my new game I played much smarter! This time I allied with Poland-Lithuania to secure my eastern borders, they helped me stomp Austria. I did the same on my eastern side, working to trade and ally with the smaller Germanic states, especially Saxony since they are under Poland's protection. After a few turns of rest Venice and the Italian states took exception my bordering them and so declared war. Stomped them both, allowing me to convert Rome into a protestant nation. Gifted Hungary and Croatia to Poland to keep them sweet. They now provide a great buffer against the gimped Austria and the Ottomans in the south.

Genoa and Savoy started to get antsy and declared war on me also, bringing in their ally Bavaria in as well. This allowed me to get a key province. I gifted away both Genoa and Savoy to Maratha, that hold the entire wealth of India. Thought it be nice to get my long time trading partners and allies some European foot holding.

Now was a good time to conquer the rest of the Germanic states. West-Phalia had actually taken France, but with my armies marching west, France managed to reclaim independence, albeit now a weakened power having lost its American territories. Gifted Flanders to Great Britain, granting them a foothold and an additional friendly force on my western front to keep check on France and Spain. Ah, Spain! They've been busy taking north Africa. They hold the remaining two provinces in Italy, Lombardy and Naples.

As it stands, all major factions, aside from Austria, are friendly with me. So I now finally feel secure. I now have all the major German territories I wanted and I got them without pissing off my neighbours thanks to defensive wars.

Dilemma now is, do I finish off France, gift them to Britain to enable me to finally look at my long time allies the Poles? They've kept Saxony under protection and they still provide a good buffer from the Ottomans and the Russians. Spain...well I could force them out of Italy at least, but that would require me to give greater attentions to the Med, and I haven't built a single ship yet.

    Great game!

My love for this game has got really deep over the last 2 months or so.
Short campaigns with Prussia,Ottomans and now Sweden have been a huge time sink.

To quote KG from the EG review,"shiny buttons and musket shot are sexy"

Any news on further expansions?I guess Napoleon is as good as ,if not a little expensive.
