Well, they've finally gone and done it:

    Sea battles!

Looks like I'm pretty much sold on getting a new PC then. Might have preferred and Asia: Total War game, but this should be good fun. It'll be interesting to see whether they change the style of gameplay as this era was hardly all huge pitched battles. But still: \0/

There's something about Rome that makes me stop playing, I think it's too difficult for me (I always end up loosing all my money and having small armies), I should just ditch it and get Civ 4 but I'm gonna play it again today to see if I'm any better at it.
  • Deleted user 22 August 2007 11:30:46
Part of me still prefers the old style Shogun/Med 1 campaign style, but Rome shouldn't be too bad - once you build a decent Empire you can Blitz your way over the map fairly easily.

Ah so this is the Napoleonic era game at last :)

It will be interesting to see how they approach sea battles as the only game to have a stab at it that was similar to the Total war series was Imperial glory and although their sea battles looked good they were virtually unplayable once you got above a couple of ships.

It will be difficult to pull this off succesfully I think.

  • Deleted user 22 August 2007 11:35:15
Yeah: stuff like at sea collisions will be tough - they can't rally skirt round the issue like they can with on-land units. Plus they're not exactly hugely manovourable so quickly changing your mind will be a big no-no!

Holy shit! These pictures make me want to...

    /cums

    ... never mind, too late.

Still hoping for a Shogun 2 though at some point. Let's all cross our collective fingers, toes and genitals and hope they don't go all modern, or worse, futuristic in any other additions to the franchise!

Sounds interesting, but it also sounds like it could be incredibly complex.

I loved the simplicity of Shogun.

    YES!

I've been waiting for Napoleonic: Total War, which is basically what this is, for ages. Proper sea battles FTW!!!!

    From the Official site:

After pummelling your enemy with cannon fire, close in to grapple their ship and prepare to board taking control your men as they fight hand to hand on the decks.

    Sounds interesting, though potentially messy.

Looks like it'll have a huge map too - maybe a full world one even:

...and extended scope taking in the riches of India, the turbulence of Europe and the untapped potential of North America.

I can't exactly see them leaving Japan out of a game about Empires really.

Agreed as the battles just would not be do-able for WW2.

The Napoleonic era is really the last point in history where we still fought fairly formal battles along the lines of lets all meet at a particular field form up in lines and try and kill one another.

A move forward beyond that period would mean coming up with a totally new battle system and I just don't think it would be a Total war game at that point.

They could do the definitive operational/strategical/tactical WWII game, I`d be very happy, and we could all move on; with the genre finally fixxored
  • Deleted user 22 August 2007 11:51:01
Going back to Warring States China/Asia to the Mongolian era would be far better imo. Plenty of scope there.

I can't see how WWII would work in the Total War Format.

Won't sell in the US. They'd only get half a game :)

I've thought about it, i reckon it could work, though there would be some poetic license/trade off. Static fronts. limited control over airforce etc

    P'raps not eh?

    /sighs

Still, Empire looks the shitz!! :D

It'll be interesting to see how they handle guerilla warfare, could be fun playing as the 'savages' kicking colonialist arse by hitting their supply lines and whatnot.
