Been listening to loads of Mastodon recently. Have had them on my iPod for a while but just never got that into them. But now I've corrected that.

Anyone else of a similar style to them?

Try Baroness.... start with the Blue Record.

Also maybe High On Fire and Kylesa.

I know it's not gonna be a popular choice in these here places but The Algorithm - Polrythmic Code" is a cracking album.

Yeah listened to this on a stream the other day and was surprised by it. Kind of a djent meets aphex twin or something.

Started listening to Summoning again recently, and have now played to death everything I have. Any similar bands out there?

    ^ That's got a strong resemblance to Samael - they'll be worth a punt.

Not sure if this has been posted already but here is some fairly serviceable melodeath/doom courtesy of Saturnus

    New album out Dec 3!

Hmm, Cynic and Atheist pulled off fantastic returns, Pestilence's recent efforts are an embarrassment to the name, wonder where this'll land?

just got this as a promo, actually. I like some of it, but it suffers with the same issue as a lot of this sort of 'djent'/modern-progressive metal stuff, ie. those fucking weakening clean vocal sections. Overall a 3/5 for me.

Ironically I liked the quiet bits, screaming sections were dull-ass 90's hardcore style imo.

Anyway you'll probably hate this, and I'm not sure if it's been posted before. Tesseract have had some troubles with vocalists but the new guy is phenomenal, they're getting more prog all the time, which is awesome. New track is one of the best I've heard all year:

Agreed, I'm sick of hearing bands with sub Slayer heaviness musically get a vocalist to scream his tits off like Barney Greenway, over it. There's a place for screaming and indeed all aggressive vocal styles, but when used in isolation they rob a vocal performance of dynamism.

I should like TeseracT, I like Periphery and Animals as Leaders. Also a lot of Proggy stuff and I;d certainly expect to like their more bass driven sound, but I just can't get into them.

    I'm currently rocking the following.

Stolen Babies' There be squabbles ahead. (kind of like No Doubt crossed with Mister Bungle)
Shaolin Death Squad's Five Deadly Venoms (an amalgamation of the best of 70s prog rock occasionally segueing into Mastodon and Mister Bungle)
and Twelve Foot Ninja's debut album, Silent Machine (FNM, meets Skindred and Messhugah).

These two I shall investigate. :D

EDIT: Chuckled at this video. Singer reminds me of someone though, can't think who.

    @orpheus

The tracks Lizard and Last Stand are my personal favourites off of Five Deadly Venoms.

Shuriken (along with Coming For You) is a choice cut from Silent Machine. Try also War and Clarion from TFN's Smoke Bomb E.P.

Anyone been to Graspop? Does it live up to the usual standard of continental European festivals I.e. kicks the shit out of the uk ones in terms of value, atmosphere and organisation?

Currently listening to another cracking Pagans Mind solo. Any other fans here? If you fancy giving them a go I'd recommend spirit starcruiser, Aegean shores or intermission.
