The new Wintersun album arrived today. I like it though it will need a few more listens to absorb it. Its different to the first one though I guess that's to be expected after 8 years.

I like it. The guitars seem less prominent which is a bit of a shame and there is maybe too much going on at times, but as a whole Im really digging it. Considering the ridiculous expectations, things must of seemed insurmountable but I think it turned out just fine.

Anyway, I dont think Jari will ever top the Ensiferum S/T, I regard that as his benchmark record, not the original Wintersun.

Didn't realise EG had a corner dedicated to all things Metal - hullo all!

Hated the new Cattle Decap video, seemed liked an attention seeking, sensastionalist shit-pile. I thought they dealt with, like, real-world issues and stuff. Love the album, though I'm now worried images of jiggling gimps snorting bloody tampons will flash into my head when I listen to it :(

Just Bandcamp'd the new Pig Destroyer album after listening to the NPR stream all last week. Eviscerating noise and great, big mosh-ready riffs. Apparently the vocalist is tying the knot, hopefully all that spooning won't dampen his ability to write harrowing murder ballads.

Ooh, not watched that Cattle Decapitation video yet; kept being reminded while I was at work.

Just watched it... not sure what the fuss is about. The stop-motiony bits were pretty well done. The genre's always been pretty much the musical equivalent of a horror film yet the videos rarely really reflected that.

Curious, we've got full-length movies like Saw, Hostel and Human Centipede out there but if a band makes something similar they're suddenly sickos or something. Like movies are make-believe but music must somehow always reflect reality.

    I'm a grumpy bastard.

@SlippedDiscs_of_Tron Listening to Pig Destroyer's latest this morning, was a bit much for an early Monday morning hangover though. The Sword's new album is also shit hot.

@warlockuk I was going to argue but then I remembered they're called Cattle Decapitation :)

    @warlockuk

I didn't find the content of the video objectionable - it's not much worse than the legions of z-grade, torture-porns flicks crowding the shelves in Asda - I just expected something a little more thought provoking from a band with such outspoken personal and political views. Their previous vid managed to be profound, as well as profoundly unsettling, without resorting to hot gimp-on-man action.

I see where you're coming from, though - I've always found it strange that people can watch humans hacking each other to bits onscreen, but find heavy metal and heavy metal imagery deeply offensive.

On topic, y'all listened to the new Anaal Nathrakh album? These guys are frighteningly consistent. Impressive stuff.

@SlippedDiscs_of_Tron I dunno, I wouldn't call this one profound but it's not without point. Those people (the Westboro baptists) are pretty much human scum. It's interesting that for once there's assholes being tortured and not the "innocent" for want of a better word. It's practically justice ;)

*edit* oh yeah - not heard the new Nathrakh yet; they're always good so I'll have to check it out soon. I'm a bit behind in recent months, there's a few newish albums I've not even heard yet.

To be honest though it's all a bit silly isn't it? I mean, I thought the cover of Carcass's Reek of Putrefaction (and of course their ridiculous lyrics etc) was cool/audacious/funny when it came out when I was 16, and I saw them live a couple of times back then, but now this kind of stuff just seems juvenile - not just because I grew out of it, but it's been done to death and it's silly.

Besides if there's a point they're trying to make then all the childish gore stuff won't help them get taken seriously.

Am I being a prude? Taking music too seriously? Maybe I dunno. Even if it's all a bit tongue in cheek - taking the daft po-faced satanic/horror obsession of 80s bands to deliberately exaggerated extremes - I look at the likes of Cattle Decapitation or Cannibal Corpse et al and I just want to chuckle and pat them on the head. Your music's ok but come back when you've grown up a bit :)

I wouldn't say gore is childish - you can't let kids see that :D It certainly is base and a bit silly.

I don't think there's a serious message to be made, so there's no need to be all highbrow about it. It goes without saying these people are assholes. It's just a simple case of "these people are dicks, let's chop 'em up."

The whole "aww, cute, grow up thing"... I don't think people do that to Clive Barker or Stephen King. They don't have little pats on the head when they write about someone being torn apart again and again while having sex with their own skull... so why can't musicians write the same things without being condescended to?

    It's a weird artistic double-standard.

    I'm a grumpy bastard.

More than likely complete nonsense, but according to a post on the humble forums of Metal Ireland, Jon Levasseur has apparently quit Cryptopsy again, with this supposedly coming straight from the horse's mouth.

It reads in a fairly similar way to the statement he released when he originally quit, so it's either a well researched hoax or the truth (probably the former, but it's late and i can't sleep!).

Probably is a hoax, but one of the forumites over on MI reckons the poster's IP address originates in Quebec, so you never know! He's not touring with them anyway, that's for sure.

Have you heard the new one warlock? Easily their best since Whisper Supremacy, at a push, None So Vile.

Been on mad Left Hand Path/Clandestine/Wolverine Blues binge since you posted that!

Picked up the new Enslaved record today, so the feet are going up and the Sennheisers are going on later! :D

Edit - picked up the new Sylosis after ye chaps talking about it (and knowing nothing about the band), t'is pretty good!

Retro heads are well catered for recently. Splendid new albums from Witchcraft and Graveyard and a great new Sabbath inspired lot called Bloody Hammers.

New MDB is very good, not a lot of growls mainly clean vocals. If you like the band you pretty much know what to expect and it is here tbh. For me their best since songs of darkness.

Went to the "Euroblast" tour in Dublin Thursday evening.

Is it just me or do all Djent bands sound the same?

Jeff Loomis was quite awesome though.

Actually, the new album is really very good indeed - a real return to form. (I like The Unspoken King though, totally understand why people don't)

Oddly enough, it seems like it was Levasseur's return that geve them the much needed boot in the arse.
