I like the new Katatonia album, but it somehow seems like a regression to before NITND.

Though I guess we didn't really just want NITND mark 2.
Still awaitng my copy to arrive. Would you say it has more in common with The Great Cold Distance then? Other than a couple of songs I was never a big fan of that record.

Kind of. It doesn't seem to have that overarching theme quite as well as NITND. For example, I wouldn't listen to just one song on that album, I'd listen to the entire thing.

This seems different, and less "gloomy", for lack of a better word. I still need to settle into it though, so in a weeks time you can probably disregard everything I've said.

This isn't a negative thing by the way! I'm really liking it now, and it's only going to get better.

The awful execution on the vocals, the bland as hell riffage/melodies and some jarringly incohesive/boringly mid-paced songs are my main gripes.

The last song 'Passion Proof Power' is awfully cluttered and disjointed. Its as if its been thrown togeather for the sake of making a 17 minute song. It falls compelely flat and is a bit of a mess.

I would also regretfully say tracks 'Pohjola' and 'Last Breath' are the worst Ensiferum have ever written.

Celestial Bond on the overhand is a wonderful, female-only sung track. Its almost fitting that that the best song on the album dosent involve Petri's awful (and at times off-key) vocals.

Maybe I'll give this one a miss then. Don't have the cash these days to just buy every album I have a vague interest in.

But hey, atleast we have the new Wintersun coming up :)
  • Deleted user 30 August 2012 23:13:12
Im not sure what to make of the new Katatonia album, there is something redundant about it, certainly hasnt lived up to Dead Letters.

Early days though, hopefully open up after a few listens.

Can't get enough of this album. I'm also floored by the fact that this is what Steffen Kummerer gets up to in between his studies and leading Obscura. Been spinning it almost constantly for the last two weeks. I know it's massively indebted to Dissection, but it just grasps what makes that sound appealing so well (i'd go out on a limb and say it's even better than Dissection, but i've never felt comfortable listening to their output with the knowledge that Nödtveidt was such a complete nutjob).

Been listening to these guys since I stumbled upon a link on a vinyl forum I lurk on every now and again.

Anyone care to recommend me a few bands that are in a similar vein? My sister recommended me eyehategod a few days back and now i'm kinda looking for similar kinda bands.

Saddens me that The Dillinger Escape Plan are so low down in that line up, under Black Veil Brides : (

They are shockingly awful.I cringe in embarrassment whenever I see them on TV!

Neurosis are touring in December,I urge anyone who has never seen them live to go.

Oh yeah, any band below the aforementioned and the awful Asking Alexandria should feel sorry for themselves.

It's the 'Alive or Just Breathing to be played in its entirety' that got my interest on that image.

Whole line up is pretty terrible tbh.

Got a certain The Obsessed meets Rev Bizarre thing there :)
Try Bongripper (bit slower), or Reverent Bizarre themselves if you've not heard 'em.
Similar in places... Kongh... Sleep. Witchsorrow?

Bit knackered so can't think straight :D

I don't see anything wrong with banning Drowning Pool fans; I say let the bodies hit the floor.

    @rodpad

Face Down's 'Mindfield' album might be up your street.

Maybe Entombed too. Wolverine Blues and Same Difference have a bit of a groove to them.

I'm sure there's more modern examples but I'm a bit out the loop myself :)

Personally (thanks to the guys here) I've been really enjoying Anterior's 2 albums lately.
