It's Rolling Stone, they've always been a rag that is barely fit to be used in the emergency of running out of toilet roll...

Edit - I'll backtrack, they have some good stuff in there, but at the same time some stuff that is barely metal (ergo they're still a bit of a shit publication)

@FuzzyDucky if you haven't already, check out Black Sites. I think a few of the band moved on to that, and it certainly has a similar but more prog infused sound.

Just browsing through the list and listening to some of it again. I was a huge fan of the Deftones' White Pony some 15 years ago and am now listening to it. I have no idea what's going on or what was wrong with me, it's fucking crap.

More importantly, I've browsed through the entire list now. No Painkiller. No Painkiller in the Top 100 metal albums of all time.

I'm the opposite with the Deftones... Hated them years ago, love them now.

No Painkiller... I said Rolling Stone is a fucking rag and I'm right. They they have any of Death's albums?

I thought the Rolling Stone list was fine as far as those things go. Mostly sidestepped what you used to get from Kerrang where the top five would be stuff you'd expect like Sabbath, Tallica, Pantera, Priest and then something that came out five minutes ago that people barely remember a year later because the band PR people have got them a cover piece next week

It was weird that they only included two Priest albums, neither of which were Sad Wings or Painkiller (Stained Class? Really?). They also included a Motörhead best of, which is a huge cop out.

I mean, fuck lists, right, but Korn ahead of Transilvanian Hunger is just bullshit. Like, objectively that's nonsense. You can't claim to be a serious music critic and have it that way around.

Yep, having a best of for a band like Motorhead is a joke. I'm not even a fan of the band, but the likes of Bomber, Overkill and No Sleep 'til Hammersmith are clearly an indelible part of the metal canon.

Hmm, that is my all time favourite album, so I'll give them the nod for that at least.

Stained Class is better than Sad Wings though

To be fair, Transilvanian Hunger is a hardcore niche thing (even I rarely listen to it), while Korn has been hugely influential for a much broader (more mainstream, if you wish) part of the metal universe. Even though I can't stand Korn today I remember I loved them back in the days.

The list has multiple albums from great bands as well as bands like Motley Crue, but nothing from Dissection, Immortal, Deicide, Obituary etc. I know that these bands don't have the mainstream appeal of 'metal' bands like Soundgarden and Korn, but how are you supposed to take it seriously? Even great bands don't necessarily need to be represented four, five or six times in the list at the expense of lesser-known more 'extreme' bands. Plus Chaos AD is the beginning of Sepultura's decline, and The Black Album is not a good record, even if you like the big tunes the rest of the album is bland filler.

TBF though it is Rolling Stone: it's a miracle that Linkin Park aren't in the top 10.

It's kind of a pointless article really; for people like us that really know their metal we can pluck a thousand records more deserving out of the air without having to think about it, meanwhile you get 5 albums from the same band that are all so predictable for people that are into metal but only the obvious bands.

I mean, Master of Puppets is what got me into metal nearly 20 years ago and I still give it regular listens, I don't need to be told for the millionth time it's good.

Are there any good metal podcasts?

iTunes just shuffled me an episode of Steel for Brains and I'm kinda bummed that the guy behind it pulled the plug on everything and vanished.

Been reading (black metal transvestite comedian) Andrew O'Neill's new History of Heavy Metal book this week. It's bloody great. I already liked his comedy and had since the original solo version of the stand up show the book is based on but the book is probably better than the show. Lots of detail, plenty of injokes for metal fans and because its a personal history of metal there's a real warmth to it. It probably helps that he cites mid-90s Metallica, Machine Head, Pantera, Fear Factory and Sepultura as his entry point into metal and they were mine too so we've got almost parallel fan trajectories. Although he incorrectly thinks death metal is better than doom.

So far the only drawbacks of the book have been a) that every chapter makes me want to listen to about ten different records and I'm reading too fast for my ears to keep pace and b) curiosity got the better of me and it made me finally listen to Cold Lake.

What the fuck happened on Cold Lake?!

Cold Lake, however, is a very good name for a black metal album

That's also a fairly serious picture by black metal standards

@simpleexplodingmaybe I've bought this to read on holiday, had a flick through and it looks brilliant. He was on Steve Lamacqs show on BBC 6 music a few weeks ago and got him to play Sick Day by Kiss It Goodbye, at teatime...

Finally found a reasonably priced copy of The Ultra violence by death angel. What an album.

Just seems to mesh together so many ideas.

I'd highly recommend this book, it's really funny and well written, and it's got me listening to and loving Sad Wings Of Destiny by Judas Priest by the pool..

So, who's going to Bloodstock? I'm nearly ready. Although I think the line up is underwhelming I'm sure it'll be a good craic.

I'll be there. The line-up is decent but I don't think it's as good as last year. Behemoth and Gojira's sets were incredible and Slayer was just a great moment when they unveiled the flaming inverted cross speaker stacks.

That said, Amon Amarth should be a great headliner, I've never seen Kreator before and all in all there's just a lot of bands I want to see. Just nobody quite up there with the best of last year.

Also looking forward to Testament, Hatebreed, Municipal Waste, Havok, Skindred, Ohhms and Bossk.

I'm in two minds about Megadeth, I mean I love their back catalogue but Dave Mustaine is just such a dick I find it hard to enjoy them these days.
