Might put my belly on show for that Ab show off. They are there but being kept warm behind a layer of insulation as its winter.

Good session of squats, bench, pendlay(strict) rows and RDLs. Threw in some farmers walks and death marches to confuse everyone in the gym as usual

Went for a cool down on the cross trainer, the TVs in the gym started showing the film Wargames. So had a much longer time cooling down than planned :)

not neccesarily. if you have been eating you will retain the muscle mass and you would need a lot longer than eight days off to lose muscle. obv the 'pump' feeling will go which may be more of a mental thing.

i found that after going heavily for eight months. taking two weeks off i actually lost fat and increased muscle size. partly due to good diet but the body does respond to a rest as much as the gym sometimes
I'd love to believe this is what is happening and probably in some cases it does...BUT I have not been on a good diet for 8 days :)

Although it probably is a high protein diet :)

My Ab hasn't been seen in ages.

Just chowing down on a huge plate of wholewheat pasta, broccoli, green beans, ham and a tomato based chili sauce. Apparently only 540kcal. And its HUGE.

Went swimming today for the first time in 2 weeks and decided to do my usual 50 length freestyle session. By the end, I actually thought I was going to die. I was on my haunches in the showers desperately trying to breath. Swimming is not a sport you can take too much time off and still maintain your fitness level to an acceptable degree.

I tried five full tilt 200m sprint intervals yesterday after it was suggested to me as being quite good. I must admit that I feel far more sore than I ever expected.

I am obviously far too used to holding a steady pace for distance running. More of these required I reckon. Hopefully, it'll help up my pace too!

Yeah, intervals seem to make a big difference. Thing is, I'm a bit worried about getting injured doing them.

Was doing some hill sprints a couple of weeks back and felt something pop in my knee. Not too much pain after a short rest, so jogged home slowly. Since then, it's been giving me grief after every run. Nothing serious but needs an extra recovery day.

Tempted to just go back to a steady pace for all runs. Probably detrimental overall, but at my age I don't want to risk another injury

Pfft. Get some kettlebells. Take no room at all and can do all kinds of work-outs.

    Short answer : Shitloads.

Long answer : So as we are moving west, my journey home will no longer take me towards London Bridge (we moved offices away this year too). So my Gym which is by London Bridge I'd rather not use anymore, and the other options near work are terrible - la fitness, fitness first that sort of thing, all ridiculously busy at the times i'd want to use it.

The cost of the equipment is actually less than a years gym membership (82 a month), and also it would mean I could use it on weekends instead of being limited to after work (I hate going to town just to use the gym).

And as we don't have a car, the rack can go into the garage :-)

oh and re: kettlebells, they are all well and good, but you don't get the fun and excitement of lifting HEAVY WEIGHTS RAAAAAWR MORE POWER.

I did 1,000ish calories at the gym this lunchtime, and I'll go again after work to do another 700ish. Which combined with my walks to and from work should rack up a solid 2,000

@THFourteen You know Twickenham has gyms right? :)

Do you have health insurance? If so you can probably get a discount at most of them as well.

I use Virgin Active in the stadium, pretty good.

@THEFourteen, that's not a bad price and a decent rack. I bought a powertec package with same weight for just over 800. A lot of money to shell out in one go, but more than pays for itself over the cost of gym membership.

Ive got mine in my garage, in winter its bloody cold in there, so you do have to be pretty dedicated.

I plan on going to gym early before work tomorrow to row. What's a good speed/distance/etc to be aiming for?

5k is my general distance, it'll take roughly 20-25 mins dependent on your fitness.

I guess 2:30/500m or less is doing ok.

Doing 5-10k at under 2min/500m is in the smoothpete zone ;)

I think I swim pretty much like that, but there seems to be a delay from when the hand / arm enters the water to when he actually starts the pull action bit. I would have thought that pause creates additional water resistance. I don't quite see what is achieved. Why not start the pull as soon as the hand hits the water?
