I got the complete set of this a few days ago after being nagged to by a friend who's a big fan of the show, and started watching it last night. I haven't seen it before, and knew nothing about it apart from some girl called Laura Palmer is murdered.

I've watched the first three episodes now (including the pilot), and I'm really enjoying it. Laughed at BOTH of Susan's parents from Seinfeld being in it. I'm hoping the Cheever letters are crucial to the murder. ;)

The third episode was the first one where it's started to get as surreal as I was expecting. Cooper's dream with the midget was, um, yeah...

The bit about Cooper's deductive technique and the lecture about Tibet has to be my favourite scene so far. Hilarious.

What's with the Log Lady intros?! :D

I just finished the episode where Madeline is murdered. Oof. Really brutal stuff.

I'm still loving the series though. I really liked the pilot episode then it took a couple of episodes to kick into gear as the investigation began, but it's firing on all cylinders now. I'm hooked.

I agree with the comments made earlier about the episodes directed by Lynch being superior. This is my first taste of his work, and after I've finished with Twin Peaks and Fire Walk With Me (which is chronologically after the series, right?), I'm going to start on his films.

The episodes not directed by Lynch are still good, but occasionally be a bit naff. Whether that's because of when it was filmed or even if it's deliberate I don't know. I'm going to have to read up on the show after I've finished watching it.

The season 1 finale is probably my highlight so far.

Fire Walk With Me is the story of the last 7 days of Laura Palmer but you should only watch it after finishing the series.

Honestly, if I could go back in time, I'd tell myself not to watch Fire: Walk With Me after seeing the series. It's completely different in tone to the series, and a bit of a downer, really.

But I read a Lynch interview where he said that the longer cut wasn't as "dark". So I'd happily watch the 5-hour cut, if it ever comes out.

The wife got me the gold box for xmas and just finished the second disc tonight, probably about 20ish (technically it's about 10 but I was so stoned at the time I can hardly remember watching it then) years since i've seen it and although seeing him now, Bob still freaks me out a bit.

It's the one thing that scared me when I saw it originally at aged 11/12 so there must be some weird repressed childhood fear still in me regarding him. The Maddie episode mentioned above is going to be interesting.

Love watching it with the wife that's never seen it before too, kind of excited for her...but I do remember the second series turning a bit soap opera like between the brilliant Lynch episodes, hopefully it's better than I recall.

Funny having the log lady intros which i'm guessing were taken from the VHS copies cause compared to the actual episodes it looks shocking picture quality wise!!

The middle of season 2 is a bit meh, that James storyline is fucking terrible. But in the end itīs worth getting through it just for those final episodes.

Agree re James, and having watched the whole thing through recently, the big soppy git seems to embody the fact that sometimes the whole Lynch thing just disappears and it becomes a cheap Channel 5 afternoon melodrama for a bit.

Still well, well worth it for the good bits though.

James is indeed awful. So wooden as well (same goes for Josie).

The Seinfeld stuff is amusing me. Both of Susan's parents are recurring characters, and Mr. Pitt's turned up too!

This is all imo, obviously bu I thought Fire Walk With Me was - by far - the worst Lynch film I've seen. Adds nothing to the story and is just a little wank.

Once you do start on the Lynch watching, be sure to get a copy of The Straight Story. It's fantastic.

I think Fire Walk With Me is weirdly better when seen as just another David Lynch film. If you watch it knowing the Twin Peaks world then it's massively dissapointing, for lots of reasons - the style is different, the tone is different, and it's completely unsatisfactory in terms of answering questions from the series. First time I saw it I hated it.

Then I saw it again years later and realised it's actually quite good, but you just have to try and see it in isolation as it were. It's really very much like other classic Lynch films.

That said I'm not such a fan of Straight Story, actually thought it was quite boring, and not very representative of his usual style.

Blue Velvet remain his best "Lynchy" films for me, Elephant Man is probably is best film overall, and Erasorhead is great for completely fucking your head and making you want to die.

As I said before, I'd still love to see the 5 hour cut if it comes out, if only because he said the cut bits would make the film "lighter", less depressing.

I'm not against depressing films per se, but imo the current FWWM really jars with the tone of the TV series.

You could well be right about Fire Walk With Me, Kal. I watched it for the reasons you stated and came away - well - cross :)

Blue Velvet is my personal fave. I love The Straight Story because it was *so* un-Lynchian and I thought the cinematography, soundtrack and cast were fantastic. Also have a massive soft spot for Wild at Heart, altho' I can see it annoying some people.

I remember when it first came out there was international outrage. Everyone just assumed it was going to finish the story. Oh dear.

Even some of the actors were mad about it, iirc.

My fave Lynch movie would be a toss-up between Eraserhead, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive. I like all of them for different reasons.

The Straight Story is great too, but I wouldn't really call it a "Lynch movie".

Dune. Loved it, still do. May not be in the majority on that one though.

I love FWWM - I do remember being annoyed that it didn't complete the story but that was quickly overcome with how good it was otherwise. Loads of off-kilter touches in it that are pure Lynch - favourite scene is the one in the Pink Room with the loud music.

One of my all-time favourite soundtracks too.

After watching a few more episodes last night (as stated above) the wife mentioned that she doesn't want to watch it just before bedtime as it kind of freaks her out a bit. 'Don't be such a wuss' were the last words I say to her as she heads upstairs for bed while I get an hour of late night gaming in.

This morning before leaving for work she rolls over to tell me about her scary TP's dream.

Whoops!! Hope it doesn't put her off watching it too much!! :p

I watched the original TV run was I was about 11. Used to sneak into my brother's room and watch it after I was supposed to have gone to sleep, then go back to bed completely freaked out. Lots of sleepless nights and bad dreams.

Good times though, didn't miss an episode!

I've only ever seen Season 1 of this, it was great. I've heard that Season 2 is much worse, so I don't think I'll bother with it.

Also, my favourite Lynch film by far is Mulholland Drive. Blue Velvet doesn't stand the test of time for me. I'd probably put Lost Highway down as my second favourite of his.

Season 2 isn't MUCH worse. It's just not as focussed and a bit more sprawling, so some of the sub-plots are a bit wank, but the main thrust of it all is just as good. If you like the first season it seems ludicrous not to have seen the second one.

Well, it's not "ludicrous". I just didn't have the opportunity at the time (I think Season 2 only came out on dvd a year or two ago, whereas I had Season 1 on dvd 7 or 8 years ago).

So, by the time I had a good opportunity, the time had passed, and I wasn't as motivated to see it as I would have been.

I think one of my favorite weird moments (apart from Tibet) was the scene with Benjamin Horne trying to talk while shoving giant bits of a baguette into his mouth.

Oh, and the continued ante-upping of the snack table in the police meetings.
