Sorry if this has been done before, but these often climactic duels can make or break a film. If you want an example of one that for me just doesn't live up to the promise, check out the end of the scorpion king (actually, don't, it'll be 2 hours you'll never get back...).

Three immediately jump to mind for me. The Matrix with Neo against multiple Smiths, for showing me something new, for pushing the boundaries and for upping the rhythm at the right time. Equilibrium, for throwing away the obvious swordfight in a single swipe, in favour of the unusual, and for some really clever editing, sharp cuts making the guns seem like swords. And Rob Roy, because Tim Roth with a rapier against Liam Neeson with a claymore is something everyone should see.

Got to be Rob Roy for me. Such a great scene.

LB, you really are a massive geek.

I'll get the fairly obvious out of the way:

Empire/Return of the Jedi: Luke vs Darth.

Not the prequels though - the editing fucked them up.

I really wasn't impressed by the 'Smiths' fight in The Matrix, but hey-ho.

For me it's got to be:

The ending to The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.
Jet Li Vs Donnie Yen in Hero and Once Upon a Time in China II.
    The Rocky films.

    More obviousness - Highlander.
Maybe Connery vs the Kurgan cos they're so rough that they knock the whole castle down.

Just what I was gonna say! Inigo vs the six fingered man. Or Inigo vs Westley 'I know something you don't know - i'm not left handed!)

The Burly Brawl was one of the worst things to happen for kung-fu action. It effectively removed the talent from it. Whilst I do appreciate that there was a lot of wirework and digital cleanup even before that (and IIRC the first film to have a completely CGI generated fight scene was Blade 2), it made it okay to replace actors with very very very obvious CGI. I also appreciate that sometimes this is unavoidable (for instance, it would be impossible to do Spiderman with just wirework), but I think it came ahead of its time. CGI actors, even now, look very unreal. The motion isn't right, the texturing rarely looks correct (in the sense that skin does not look like skin), the weight and balance is all over the place. Blah.

Plus it wasn't even a very good CGI fight.

Matrix trilogy has better fights in itself at just about every corner.

Oh except for the pimp battle in the third film. Wait no, forget the whole third film.

Oh I kind of like the fencing scene in Die Another Day, too.

    Bond with swords!

    Westley VS Inigo Montoya
    Inigo Montoya VS Count Rugen
Beatrix Kiddo VS The Crazy 88

Zatoichi (2003) has some nice swordplay and an excellence dance sequence at the end (Deem, don't watch this)

    There are too many!

Good point. The mansion fight was very well done, I thought, where they're all battling with weapons and leaping about like freaks. Hardly any CGI there, it's mostly all wirework.

The end of Ghost Rider was the most anticlimatic battle ever.

Yeah that's the scene I was thinking of. Good music tempo links this fight and the brief 'Upgrades' fight near the beginning. Burly Brawl had embarrassing music.

Also, whenever I watch it I feel like the ghost twins were a missed opportunity. The part of the mansion escape scene where Morpheus has his katana out for two bloody seconds is really promising, then he stops and gets in the car :-(

You got to the end of Ghost Rider, Gremmi? You've got more stomach than me.

And the fight scenes in the Matrix were pretty mediocre tbh. Esp that one where Neo fights all the Mr. Smiths. You got lots of fighting and then he flies off... so the fight scene had no payoff - he could have done that at any time so it's just a dull sequence of flailing.

That is The Burly Brawl that has been previously cussed in this thread.

It did have a sort-of point to it, in that it showed that Smith had become a lot more powerful than Neo thought.

The whole Matrix trilogy is one giant mess, anyway. The third movie pretty much ignored everything that happened in the second (like how they went absolutely nowhere with the "You are the sixth" idea).

And the agent Smiths were supposed to be simulated constructs in Neo's mind, so creating hundreds of versions of him using CGI for the movie kind of fits.
